Well I happened upon this on the front of my youtube page. I work at an Ulta. And I spent hours with my coworkers cleaning boxes, broken glass, cardboard, packaging, and in general trash thrown bout of the dumpster from divers. Although we tried to clean it all, we actually had to put a ticket in and hire a cleaner to come in and pick up the trash off the ground when it got so bad. It also happened during a storm, so everything was rotten on the ground we had to clean up and put back in the dumpster. I pray on my and my coworker's time and effort you did NOT litter around the dumpsters. Yes, most dumpster divers throw it out of the dumpster to be able to actually get through the trash, but for the love of god its so awful on US to clean up after. Just an opinion on the other side of the dumpster.
@Shelbizleee

+Cosplay Lane I totally get that! I'm so sorry that divers do that to you guys. In my advice videos I always make a point to tell people to clean up and get IN the dumpster so there isn't a mess outside. I'm glad you said his so people who are thinking about trying this can see.

Cosplay Lane, I have been collecting boxes for moving & sometimes I'm embarrassed that people are taking trash OUT & making a mess that SOMEONE ELSE must clean up. Employees are dressed nice to work w customers & not trash detail. Before I leave the area I don't mind bending over & picking up items or even bags that didn't fit or fell off the top. Besides, I'm guaranteed wearing gloves & ok with the exercise of bending over. Taking a few quality boxes makes more room in the bin too. All DDers I've met are ecologically driven & aware. I don't understand people who become vegans to protect animals & won't pick up a piece of trash blowing around that will endanger animals lives. Do they lack priorities, education or are they just posers? Soap Rulz!

It's so intressting how something can have so high value when it is in a store, and be seen as something so "worthless", "discusting", when it is no more. really intressting just questioning how the human brain works, the content in the bottle will still be the same that it was just in the store. Intressting how fast the materiall valu shifts

FORMER ULTA PRESTIGE MANAGER HERE! I don't give AF if you dumpster dive. I think it's a good recycling program 😂😂 and we did throw away a lot of perfectly good things. Prestige items are ridiculously overpriced so I get it. Please tho ---- DO NOT use used mascaras or lip glosses or anything liquidy with a wand that is supposed to be opened and applied. I've seen sick toddlers 'play' with these and tons of people put them directly on their lips without tester wands. The wand could have fallen directly on the dirty floor and that is why we threw it away. You could get sick 😷 or get pink eye or an infection pretty easily. But if that's the chance you want to take so be it.🤐 Pretty much anything else --eyeshadow, powder, lipsticks, cream compacts -can be sanitized and do not breed bacteria as easily. Just clean with alcohol for atleast 30 seconds and scrape away several layers of the product. Anything like a foundation or skin care item that is in a sealed pump is ok too.. just FYI trying to help!!😀 A few years ago ulta employees were allowed to take home used testers (as did I - I mean except for mascaras n such) and most of us did...so any of them who are complaining...pot/ kettle✌🏻️

@cass9949 7 жыл бұрын
She probably hadn't cleaned them ~yet~. You most definitely can sanitize a lot of makeup products. Perfumes and colognes need no more than a quick wipe off with sanitizer wipes. Lipsticks, creams, and pressed powders can be spritzed or mixed with rubbing alcohol (lipsticks thrown out are usually testers and generally don't ever touch peoples' lips because they use applicators or swatch on hands but you can still scrape the outer layer and sanitize). You learn something new everyday!

the thing with Ulta is they have this policy where if a opened product is returned or exchanged, they can't just resell it, they have to throw it away. And also some of them are the samples used in the stores. but i think now a lot of Ulta stores are using this technique where they pour shampoo or something on the trash to stop people from taking it from the trash

i'm a dumpster diver and i don't think it's gross but i do think making youtube videos about it isn't a good idea bc as word gets out, the stores will start hardcore destroying product or they'll lock their dumpsters or get compactors :( keep to more lowkey sites like reddit and specific facebook groups to talk about it and post ur hauls. as more and more ppl talk about this, i've seen like 6 other divers at my usual place. it's getting competitive so if i were you i'd keep to yourself!!

Yea i worked at Walgreens before and they made us ABSOLUTELY use the compacter for almost everything that couldnt be sent back to the companies. It would piss me off because it really is a waist of $!!! And if we even took a rubber band or an eraser from there it was instant fire and possible theft charge. I had a roomate who's mother would dive and man she found the craziest of things! I honestly wish i had the balls to do it but i have full sleeve tattoos so i think most people would assume im trying to rob the store vs checking the trash lol

Moca Koka a lot of people return things they are unsatisfied with or not a color match for their skin, they are store testers etc. nothing a makeup disinfectant can't clean as far as scavenging for tooth brushes and calis bars then yess somethings very wrong... but as you can see these products are expensive and idk seems like a waste to just throw it away I'd do this if I was balsy enough but I don't see anything wrong with it since it's thrown away..

From a retail worker point of view, stores throw away NEW AND NEVER OPENED OR USED, all types of products! Majority of the used items are testers and or returns that are still usable but are no longer store standards to sell. Unfortunately stores won't even give the items to employees. I think "dumpster diving" is looked at as gross because of the act of going into a dumpster BUT the items being salvaged are NOT garbage. I think this is great! It's a way to salvage some waste that retail stores produce.

I applaud you for dumpster diving as a way to help the environment. It's a cool thing to do that not many people are aware of. As everyone can see, you're very dedicated to helping the environment, yet, you use makeup products and brands that use animal testing. Just a thought...

Dumpster Diving and the Law We aren’t lawyers but this is our best understanding as plain-old US citizens. Dumpster diving is legal in the United States except where prohibited by local regulation. According to a 1988 Supreme Court Ruling (California vs. Greenwood), when a person throws something out, that item is now the public domain. Here is some language from that ruling: “It is common knowledge that plastic garbage bags left on or at the side of a public street are readily accessible to animals, children, scavengers, snoops, and other members of the public.” However, if a dumpster is against a building or inside a fenced enclosure marked “No Trespassing,” you could be questioned, ticketed or even arrested by the police. Other law-enforcement tactics to discourage dumpster diving include: - to ticket or arrest for littering (hence the legal as well as common courtesy reason to leave a trash area neater than you found it!); - to ticket or arrest for disorderly conduct, if you are blocking a sidewalk or generally creating a ruckus while dumpster diving, or refuse to leave an area when requested to do so. Unless a town or city has specifically made dumpster diving illegal, generally the police will not come unless called by a store manager or property owner. In our experience, this is yet another good reason to be courteous with any store employee (or resident with a dumpster) who questions the dumpster diving in progress, and to use common sense about how long an individual or group stays at any one trash location. If anyone asks you to leave, consider doing so, even if the law is on your side- there are plenty of other wasted resources to be found. Good Samaritan Law: No Excuses for Not Donating Store managers will claim that food in their dumpster cannot legally be consumed by humans, or that they cannot donate or give it away. This is either ignorance or lies. If you have the patience to educate, you may want to bring up the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act that has has been the law since the 1990s. Some people suggest telling store managers you are collecting food to feed livestock or for a compost pile and if you don’t want to make a political point on the waste this will usually work. Some managers will even tell you when certain items are discarded (ie; produce), and encourage you to come get them. The main thing that food stores are worried about is¬† someone getting sick from what they throw away, and then suing them. There is backlash in a number of communities on the issue of “theft” of recyclables from city recycling bins. Metal can often be sold at prices that make scavenging aluminum (especially cans with a fixed deposit), old appliances, and even power cords a viable cottage industry. A number of cities now have laws against this kind of dumpster diving with a vehicle. Most cities will not harass the small-scale scavenger with a granny cart or bicycle. “Warning, do not play on in or around dumpster” - such signs are for the protection of the people who own or rent the dumpsters, in case someone gets hurt, to avoid liability. Wikipedia on dumpster legality Includes some info on the legal situation in Europe and Canada. Supreme Court ruling on dumpster diving When it ruled in the Gravewood decision in 1988, the US Supreme Court was looking to protect cops, not dumpster divers. Nonetheless, their ruling is the overall US law, unless a municipality specifically makes trash picking illegal. “Paghat the RatGirl” on dumpster legalities Well thought through for the US. Bargainshare Discussion on Dumpster Diving Legality Dumpster Diving and Privacy Law A Massachusetts lawyer’s rather negative take on the freedom to go through the trash. I think dumpster diving is amazing because it allows people who cant afford the things society pressures them into wanting to be able to get it and be proud of what they have found. There are so many ways to sanitize things that this is completely worth it. My sister (who I look up to with my whole heart) dumpster dives to stay alive and for that I am forever grateful that they are there. I am for sure going to do this as soon as I can because I never thought about doing this with makeup. Ashleigh Latham so we throw out our products because they are expired or something is wrong with them. Also our testers are basically contaminated after so many months in a store and everyone is touching them we are told to get rid of them for bacterial reasons. Especially the cream contour kits. And lipsticks and mascaras are contaminated as soon as someone uses it that's like chewing someone else's gum after they've chewed it or this mascaras... everyone has eye mites and when you use a mascara it contaminated it. Nothing she has is new. Any product thrown out was returned they are put back into their boxes and thrown away and or the product is expired as I said.

Like the other girls who've commented, I also work at an Ulta and whatever store she is going to is doing a horrible job of getting rid of their damaged products. I know that when you mark something as "damaged" (its been returned and used, its an old tester, etc.) you are supposed to physically damage the products. For example, those foundation bottles should have been pumped until they were empty and the powders and cream in the contour pallets should've been scraped out of the pan. I know that to many it sounds harsh and it breaks my heart when I have to damage out items that haven't even been used that much! According to Ulta's policy though, these products must be left empty so nobody can take them for free when we throw them out. This store would get in so much trouble if more people knew and their DM found out. As a makeup lover, I see no harm in doing this, as long as it did not result in a huge mess, because at the end of the day it was the store's fault for not properly disposing of these products. At the end of the day, Ulta has to destroy products that have been returned and used due to sanitary purposes. I hope that she properly disinfects these products though because from working at Ulta I've seen how many people touch and use the testers!

I actually work at Ulta and a lot of the times people return mascaras and lipsticks they've been used, that's why they're in the garbage and not up for sale. Personally, I would not want to use something that has touched another person's lips or eyes because that is one of the easiest ways to spread bacteria. We also put our damaged products with other garbage from throughout the store since it's all going to the same place, so that's never sanitary either.

I found a full Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume once. And a box full of the samples that they threw out. The important thing to remember is to clean all the stuff you find. Pallets and anything that will get near your eyes. I cleaned everything by spraying it with alcohol. Some products were new in the box. Just be careful and disinfect your whole body when dumpster diving. I don't go anymore but maybe in the future I will try again. Another good spot is Staples. They tend to dump everything that seems damaged but is still usable. The Clear one is for red colors to not bleed past your lip line.

See I didn't see it as mocking I was actually just about to post "just FYI "Dolce" is pronounced "Dole-Che" like the Banana Brand and Che-Che's salsa. And Givenchy is Jee-Vaun-she. Or Gee- depends how pretentious you sound. Givenchy is as classic a fragrance brand as Chanel so it's like nails on a chalkboard for some when it's mispronounced. However had my Mum not worn their most famous fragrance I don't think I would have known how to pronounce it either. ^.^

+Gilbert McDonald I'm sorry to hear that people say that about you. That really bothers me. Of course people say things like that to me, but on a mass scale because I'm putting it out there for the world to see. I just don't care what other people think at all. It has no effect on my life, as long as what I'm doing is not negatively impacting anyone, then no one should care. I hope that I can lead as an example for you. Thanks you so much for sharing.

Lancôme isn't an old lady brand. lol Its a luxury brand of make up, a higher step up from what people consider high end makeup. Such as TooFaced and Urban Decay. Lancôme is up there with brands like Chanel and Dior. Most of the stuff you see in Macy's around the make up counters. Also a lot of people love Lancôme because of the variety in shades of foundation that they have. I promise I don't mean this rudely at all. 💕 Just wanted to share that Lancôme isn't an old lady brand. ✨
@Shelbizleee
@Shelbizleee 7 жыл бұрын
No worries, I didn't take that rudely at all. I do my best to accept all comments with an open mind. I just think Lancome doesn't have any of the fun colors and gimics that other brands have that typically cater to a younger consumer. My mom and aunt love it tho, LOL.

Shelbizleee I couldn't agree more! I know exactly what you mean. I only get my foundation, powder and mascara from them. They also have amazing skincare. When it comes to palettes they aren't super eye grabbing like Too Faced or other brands. Congratulations on your dive haul! You got a lot of really good stuff!💕

Sarah Hicks it's illegal if the area you're doing it in is a no trespassing zone. My stepmom adores doing this lol. It's really not that gross. You can typically tell a difference between the garbage bags full of nasty trash and other bags.

I am just SHOCKED that they would throw all this stuff out. I thought they had to return to the manufacturer or something? Props to you if you can use it. And there are cosmetics cleaners you can send all the stuff to so you can use it without a worry anyway.

I have worked at Ulta and it doesnt work like that, they arent allowed to give them to us because they are technically damaged for whatever reason and some products are sent back to the manufacturers while the others are thrown out due to how damaged they are and its just how the policy is, i agree that it is wasteful to some degree but usually the products are very damaged. like most of the palettes are broken, so its really weird that she was able to find that much
