Thank you lol I was wondering why no one ever has them in these kits. Even with an overcast day you can get a fire going even if it takes hours still better than using heaps of energy using a friction method or using no reusable resources.

Good video packed with great advice.... However, if I can critique one thing - Tone down the volume of your intro music. I watch these YT videos with earbuds on, and when the intro music is ten times louder than the rest of the video, it almost makes it not worth watching. Its not just annoying, it hurts my ear drums. Just saying.

Why are folks hating on this video? I may not carry half of these items, but I really appreciate seeing all the options laid out. Fact is, I know a whole lot of people who go out into the woods on a dry day for a simple hike and picnic with a bic lighter, thinking they are guaranteed a fire, but they cannot get one going whatsoever. I’ve been in Kentucky in the early spring with everything soaking wet, and because I brought a few extra options, I’ve been able to get a fire going sufficiently to dry out some wood and have a really nice blaze. Options and backups are worth having when you really need them.

That 54 foot roll of fire starter was actually impressive. Seen this before and had my doubts. Seems a little pricey until you see that it starts over 300 fires 🔥. Using an inch and half instead of 2 and now it’s 432 fires. 2 cents per fire doesn’t seem pricey anymore. Carry that and a Bic lighter and you’re set for months.

Cool video. Overkill? I don't think so. I've been winter backpacking for over 45 yrs and a great fire kit is a potential lifesaver. Sometimes there's just not enough natural dry tinder in damp, heavily wooded areas, so that extra tinder you carry is extremely useful. New sub...glad to have found your channel.

I really like the kit, but we have to admit, it's just overkill, you can build a fire in under 5 minutes with a flint and steel, no problem. When you're hiking or just having some stuff on you 'just in case' weight is essential. One of the most common mistakes is survival, is carrying stuff you don't actually need.

It finally happened! After all these years of backpacking, bicycle touring and 4x4 camping I finally had a situation where I had to use a little bit of the store-bought tinder that I've been carrying around all this time. I kayak camped at a popular sandy beach spot and the ground was picked clean of anything flamable by the hordes of campers before me with exception to a bunch of 2x4s someone left behind. I couldn't get a fire started with the very little I had to work with and succumbed to using a string of "Baddest Bee Fire Fuse". Now look at me, watching youtube videos and considering upping my fire starter kit game.

That is a lot of cool stuff!! I am not all that bright, but I haven’t seen anyone talking about picking the most foolproof fire starter and putting 2 or 3 of them in various places on your body/ pack. I used to enjoy coming up with 20 or 30 different ways creating fire and putting it all in a big waterproof container. When you have one giant kit on you, it can get lost. Think of using gel-waxed cotton balls and an exotac nano spark and or a Spark-light one handed sparkers. The gel-waxed cotton balls burn for 20 min or longer. I put 4 together with a sparker in a ziplock bag. It weighs next to nothing. I have 1 in my pocket, one in top lid of pack and 1 in ditty bag. 1in my first aid kit. There is no way that I will lose them all. They weigh practically nothing and they will get a fire going even in rain. I have even used one to boil water. Knowing about natural tinder is a plus. I also have Fresnel Lens in wallet. God bless. Keep up the good work. John

I'm personally quite fond of the clipper lighters for a few reasons, 1 they are about the same price as a full sized bic. 2, they're refillable. 3, they have a replaceable spark wheel that can be removed and used on it's own if you run out of fuel. Also I tend to wrap them in waxed hemp wick and some gorilla duct tape, allowing me to use it as, 1 a normal lighter. 2 a long lighter for candles, grills, reaching into fire lays, and any other reason for a long lighter. 3 I can take a length of the hemp wick wrap it in the tape and use it as fire tender.

I love those kits Chris! I really appreciate that you have a wide range of starters and tinders. In general, prepared tinders are just consumables, (one and done,) but they're vital to getting a fire lit quickly. Especially when conditions aren't ideal for nursing a fire up from a spark. There was more than once when we'd get to a campsite, it's getting dark and the kids are hungry. That isn't really a situation to practice your fire starting skills. We just have to get it lit and start cooking and my prepared tinder is my go-to for getting us going. Normally tho, I'm encouraging my family to practice our fire starting skills without the prepared tinders. Flint today; bow drill tomorrow; and maybe a fresnel the day after. The important thing for me is that it teaches my kids to keep an eye out for natural tinders along our hikes. Sometimes we have races to keep it fun. Who can start a fire and boil the water for their freeze dried meal first. You have some great kits there and I can't imagine your family being cold at night during a bugout. Thanks for measuring that roll and trying it out for us! Great Job and great video!

Awesome. Some really great items there that would be well suited to the generally damp Irish environment. I keep numerous methods of fire starting in my kit. Favourites being my magnesium block, good quality fire steel, charcloth, Birch bark and all the typical other methods. Recently I found wax impregnated wood shavings being sold as BBQ lighters. They light great and burn for a minute or two. Only disadvantage is they are a little bulky. Loving the fat stick. Looks amazing. Definitely one going in and another to process for prepared tinder.

Thank you for sharing these 4 fire kits. I love how you made one for the different levels. Also, nice work doing the due diligence to measure out that firestarter tape. I'm looking for the link to the Gen 2 Fat Rope Stick. I don't see it in your show notes.

If you need 750 pieces of fire gear to start a blaze maybe you should just stay home. My kit has a bic, a Ferro rod, cotton balls and chapstick to add to the cotton. Done.
