On a technical note, the problem with magazine detonations is the powder/propellant bags going up. The 16” guns on the later US BBs could fire as much as 660 pounds of powder per shot. That’s far more explosives than the AP or HE projectile itself contained.
@tommeakin1732
@tommeakin1732 3 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert on the specifics of magazine detonations; but propellants are low explosives and the explosives contained in the shells themselves are high explosives - propellants cooking off are definitely no joke, but you're not getting the completely "catastrophic", stereotypical explosions from those. The flash fire "columns" are supposed to be your propellants going up. The catastrophic explosives will come from the HE going up. But this is all naturally interconnected, as one going off would lead to the other going off. I'm not educated enough to know if there are any recorded cases of the propellant mags going off without it triggering the shells
@aaronp3411
@aaronp3411 3 жыл бұрын
@@tommeakin1732 I don’t know for sure, but I’d imagine that in this situation quantity has a quality all its own. Each shot has a charge of 660 pounds of powder vs the HE/HC shells having a bursting charge of ~156 pounds. And every round isn’t going to be HE, especially when the ship is expected to engage capitol ships. However, in Korea, Vietnam, and the reactivating in the 90s, I’d imagine more HE would be present.
@Salt0fTheEarth
@Salt0fTheEarth 3 жыл бұрын
@@tommeakin1732 the battleship's magazine and internal armor citadel are are effectively a pressure vessel. Anytime you have deflagration in a confined space, the pressure will build until either the fuel source is exhausted or the pressure vessel ruptures. Hundreds of tons of propellant cooking off in the magazine will turn it into a bomb, and there's no way the pressure will be able to vent fully through the hoists. High explosives are as a rule more stable than low explosives. Low explosives/deflagrants will ignite with enough heat, but many high explosives will not detonate without a specific level of explosive shock. This is why dynamite will ignite with a fuse, but TNT requires a starter explosive called a detonator. In the case of a magazine fire, the shell bursting charges probably wouldn't detonate unless they had fuses in place. Remember, these shells will survive slamming into armor plate without spontaneously detonating.

To put that into perspective, you could line up two Iowa-class battleships end-to-end and have just enough room to stack a Fletcher-class destroyer behind them, if you shaved about four and a half feet off the end. I always wondered the opposite - sending late 1960's/early 1970's destroyer(ie in-game represented as big light cruiser with nigh maxed out speed) to duke it out against 1920's/1930's battleship with escorts. Several 6 inch autoloading guns against escorts and 22-24inch torps against battleships.

a 60s/70s Destroyer would have 3-5 inch guns, not 6. Also would have missiles, whichis an issue with the game, but I guess that's what the torps are to simulate for.

Something similar was explored in the anime Zipang, which posed the question of how a modern JSDF aegis destroyer with a modern Japanese crew, with modern sensibilities, would deal with suddenly finding themselves in the middle of the Battle of Midway. They basically have to consider their past, present and future in an all new way as they find themselves able to influence the war in massive and unpredictable ways, many of them struggling with the moral and patriotic questions that would rightly arise. All in all a pretty good series with some very cool scenes, like when they fire a Tomahawk missile at an American Carrier after warning them that they would defend themselves if pressed, a scene that I think is up on youtube somewhere.

@@DanielKjeldal ah yes, the anime where japanese use american equipment to kill american soldiers and talk about changing the outcome of the war as if US wasn't producing 50+ capital ships per year at that point and wasn't halfway finished with B-29 and nukes! @DanielKjeldal
@DanielKjeldal 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheArklyte For me that particular aspect which you seem to have taken offense to in some manner wasn't the main draw. I was much more invested in the moral dilemma of the captain and his officers. They had to take into account their oath to the nation, and the constitution that they were bound by and breaking that bond was a major point of contention among the crew. Which is further explored in the manga/light novel. The idea that they could win wasn't in the mind of any of them, they didn't particularly want to get involved, much less win the war for a government they don't agree with, but their hand was forced by the IJN officer they save. Either way, it is a fun anime as you say.
@TheArklyte
@TheArklyte 2 жыл бұрын
@@DanielKjeldal I'm taking offense in that any nationalistic anime that praises JSDF ends up being waste of my time. Like GATE for example. Patlabor was great, but surprise surprise it wasn't praising Japan. And also the fact that they pose de facto license built american destroyer(guns, radars, engine) as japanese one. Imperial Japan and modern Japan aren't the same state and their oath has nothing to do with the former just like ukranian soldier that served in USSR has no obligation to fight for Russia. The only thing they share is the firm belief that they did nothing wrong. The american movie differed in that it was THE SAME state, not the descendant government. And that it was a nuclear powered supercarrier with aircraft delivered supply of small nukes onboard(considering it was Cold War). Besides in such scenario carrier indeed has an advantage as it needs only kerosene and bombs to continue offensive action, no missiles impossible to replace in that time period, no cannon ammo not even produced in that era. Although one could argue that a destroyer too can change a lot by being used as scout and coordination vessel in night and bad weather conditions with its superior radar and comms while keeping somewhat out of danger. That's basically what Kirov series is about...

Large german gun was about 20.5 in or 52cm. It was the largest “portable” cannon ever built by man. In quotes because anything can technically be transported but it was designed to be fired from its movable mount. Actually had to aim the thing with curved sections of track. It had not other real form of traverse. Could have had a larger gun on a battleship for sure. No one ever did though.
@mattd7566
@mattd7566 3 жыл бұрын
But then they did build a bigger one at 80 cm. Which is 31.5 in. So putting that on a ship would have been difficult to say the least. I doubt it would be in a conventional turret and would only have been useful as a shore bombardment siege weapon. It took something like 45 minutes to load.

Another one of those German insecurity projects that involved doing something technically impressive on a very small scale that was strategically of very, very little use - despite the massive cost. My favourite thing about these kinds of projects is that apparently most people on the internet seem to buy the intended "muh German superiority" propaganda message lol. In reality, the reason why nobody else really bothered with these kinds of things is because things tend to cease to be practically useful when you exceed a certain scale, and you start getting a load more inefficiencies

@@tommeakin1732 yeah. Take the Ratte tank for example. It was going to have essentially a battleship turret on top of a tank chassis. Crew was gonna be somewhere around 60-100 guys. God forbid you have to put it on a ship to invade someone.

@@tommeakin1732 yeah. Germany thankfully wasted tons of resources and time on utterly useless and hopeless projects. We can admire the advances in engineering and the skills required to complete or attempt such feats of engineering but at the end of the day, they were a major drag on the German war effort and helped seal the deal for the Allies. Germany was never gonna win with Battleships. So why build Bismark and Turpiz? They could have built hundreds of subs for the same resource cost and an insanely better return of value. The V series rockets were terrifying sure, but ultimates of little strategic value. So why build these massive complex launch sites that took month or years and so much concrete you could have almost doubled the defenses on the Atlantic wall. German mismanaged resources because they listened to Hitler. He was the greatest ally of the Allied armies.

From my understanding of Lanchester's Laws, I suggest that you build several very durable battleships with many long-barreled mid-size guns. *[1]* I don't what an appropriate number of ships would be. *[2]* The deck armor should be very thick. *[3]* The guns should be as close to L50 in length (or greater). *[4]* The number of guns should be between 9-16 (3x 3-gun, 4x 3-gun, or 4x 4-gun). *[5]* The caliber of the primary armaments should be between 14-16 inches.

I’d say anything over a 10 year tech gap in UAD is going to be very one sided - I don’t know how the campaign is going to work with refits and retrofits but you’re going to have to produce new ships all the time.

The biggest German railway gun ever made their caliber will be bigger than the 20 inch because basically over 31 inch Big enough Instantly obliterate a Destroyer with one devastating strike

The Jump in sound between the 18 inch guns and the 19 and 20 inchers is a little unrealistic

probably the only country that could have built a 130,000 ton BB (or ship in general at the time) was the US and they'd of probably wound up as our Yamato/Musashi Germany could have built one but would never have had the economy for it.

The problem with extremely large guns on ships is that the ship can destroy itself from the recoil.
@Trigm
@Trigm 2 жыл бұрын
Just do the math. Yes you are slinging out huge amounts of force, but the ship you are firing from is so massive that that much more still does basically nothing. The main problem is the square cube law meaning a the increase in weight goes up exponentially while caliber increases linearly. Thus you need way more ship to hold slightly bigger guns. In all, 18in was about as far a you can practically push gun size, as Yamato's turrets weighed as much as a current destroyer. You can google the gun weights of some WW2 battleship guns to see the trend.

This was silly. I mean at the end of the match the entire Grand Fleet has been sunk and Markgraf basically just needs a new coat of paint - not a fight but a one-sided ass kicking contest against an opponent with no legs. Are we going to see "What if a thousand unarmored gunboats armed with 2" guns take on the Yamato" next? Let's please go back to matches that actually make things a bit of a challenge.
