2023- when I do the math it's mind-blowing that it's been more than 40 years since the release of this Masterpiece! I was maybe 13 when I first heard this. WOW! I was just Blown away. This is a CD that is always in the car and I still blast it today like I did all those years ago.

I saw one of those 40 shows with Billy Squier and I promise you it was exactly what they said. I almost felt sorry for Billy but also that was my first show at 14 years old and it spoiled me rotten. The next show I saw that was even close to Def Leppard was Van Halen in 1984.

I saw them at least FIVE times on this tour during my Jr. & High School days..., piling into someones unbeknownst parents car a zipping down to Phoenix to see them & coming back up to Northern Arizona the same night! Then, trying to show up for class the same morning you got in but, wearing a Def Leppard t-Shirt made it all worth IT!! I may be Older.., BUT..., I got to see all the Cool BANDS!!!

I first heard Def Leppard when I was 15, avatar pic! (1981) and was listing to Leppard before most even knew who they were. Until then I was a huge AC/DC fan, still am but the High N Dry album was charged with so much energy I was hooked! I couldn't wait for their next record to be released. When it hit it was all over for whatever was playing on the radio at the time. I'm 51 now at the time of this post and I'm still rocking Leppard though I must confess it's not so much Pyromania as it is High N Dry. I play the shit out of it and is to this day still my favorite Leppard recording out of them all, so much more raw and powerful sounding than all the rest. Maybe not as hit laydon as Pyro which is a great album but for me the guitars just slay on that album and as a guitar player I can't deny the feeling I get when I fire up and play all those songs.

I agree with you. I also do love the Pyromania album alot, but High N Dry is and has always been my favorite Def Leppard album. I got all four Def Leppard albums that they had at the time back in 1988. I was barely 10 years old and I loved all four studio albums, but High N Dry and their first studio album On Through The Night really amazed me back then, and over thirty years later they are both still my favorite albums. The raw sound on the first album to me is what makes it a MASTERPIECE. The pure hard rock sound of the second album is what makes it a MASTERPIECE to me. I just last month got their latest box set called The Early Years 1979- 1981. It has both On Through The Night and High N Dry remastered, the third CD is a 1980 live concert from their first tour that has every On Through The Night song on it and five other songs that were b sides that were awesome also, the fourth CD has early recording sessions of songs from their first two studio albums, and the fifth CD has many different live recordings from tv specials. This boxset is a must for the Def Leppard fans that love their first two albums.

@@johnkatsoudas4767 Thank you for pointing that box set out. I am a huge Def Leppard fan. I flew out to England and took a train to Sheffield and visited my Top 5 guitarist's, White Lightning's grave site. I could tell you a story here what transpired while I was there, but it is both sad and revealing. Many people would moat likely not believe me. Thanks again for pointing their Box Set Name.

I saw them May 29th, 1980 in Portland Oregon. I was 16 years old and I believe they said the average age of their band at the time was 19, amazing. We had never heard of them. They were opening up for The Pat Travers band. They came out blazing with I think "Rock Brigade" and then "Hello America, a few good head bangers in between and then finishing up with I think, "Wasted." When Pat Travers came out it was pretty much a let down. Needless to say we all went out and bought the "On Through The Night ' cassette and it was blasting through the high school parking lot the following Monday. Lmao

Def Leppard was my favorite band growing up. I heard Rock of Ages in 83 or 84 and that was the song that did it for me. My mom had to buy me 3 separate Pyromania cassettes because I listened to them so much that they wore out. She was like "I already bought you that tape." And I was like I know but it doesn't work anymore. The only other cassette that wore out like that was Pearl jam 10 but I think the reason for that was it got hot being left out in my car. But I couldn't tell you how many times I listened to Pyromania. More than any other album. I also had the sleeveless Union Jack T-shirt that is in so many pics from the mid 80's.

I remember joining a rock band back in ‘79 or ‘80 and the singer had a DL poster on the wall in the rehearsal room. I’d heard DL’s High n Dry but hadn’t seen them. Joe was the oldest member (about my age) and Rick Allen was only 15 years old. Most of them were teenagers or barely 20 at the time. I was blown away how good they were at such a young age.

Not only did I buy Pyromania in 1983, I absolutely remember that Union Jack shirt being a must have. As stupid as it may seem today, which is early 2023, back then New Wave was garbage, and slowly you were seeing more "metal" stuff appearing in stores, like that shirt, studded wrist bands, headbands with band names on them, etc. It was awesome to have this new music from Leppard, Motley, QR, and others, especially for a 12 year old kid!

I got this album for my 11th birthday. My parents rented out the volunteer fire department, so I got to invite all my friends, and my best friend got me Pyromania, so it was the soundtrack for the evening. A bunch of crazed younguns dancing around, playing leapfrog, boys and girls French kissing for the first time...it was fucking awesome.

All the positive things said here are true but speaking as a 49 year old who remembers 1983 very well making it almost seem like rock was dead before this album isn't accurate . I understand in the vh-1 version of rock history no matter what band they're doing a documentary on that's usually the case making the band seem like saviour's Rock was doing fine enough for the real fans. As far the people who only listen to the radio looking for the next trend then maybe it's more accurate.That being said yes this album was different and huge. Although since i first discovered Def Lep in 1981 High & Dry has always been my favorite but I am glad to say i was one of those teenagers that got to see them in the summer of 83 in Ft Myers, Florida on this tour. Definitely one of my favorite concerts.

In 1980 Leppard was in the same group as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, and Diamond head as part of next great wave of British Heavy Metal. By the mid 80s, Leppard was changing stylewise musically. (Thanks to "Mutt" Lange) They were the gold standard that everyone who wanted to hit it big was going to follow.

I would have started that pop metal sound too after being rejected by their home country because they didn't sound exactly like Iron Maiden, they just gave the UK two middle fingers and never looked back, but then the UK eventually took them back and gave them their first number one album with Hysteria because they were too quick to judge, as far as the American side of the pop metal, all the bands wanted the success so they all sold out and tried to copy Def Leppard every single one of them

Hell, even KISS released arguably their all-time best and heaviest album during that time. Had Def Leppard continued that High N Dry/Pyromania sound, they'd be up there with Led Zeppelin without a doubt
@leebaron3230
@leebaron3230 8 жыл бұрын
See I don't think so. I know what you're saying but I personally think they would've been dead in the water had they continued down that path. Eventually critics and journalist and people would have said they sound the same over and over again. I also agree with your comment not the Led Zeppelin part but they could have stayed Hard Rock and not made the biggest album they'd ever make, Hysteria..... Arrrght!

High and Dry sounds like AC/DC plus a heavy ballad. They would have stayed a band with a midsize following like The Cult after Electric.

kalebpost20 or even the adrenalize or hysteria sound but they were getting copied so much that there sound would’ve been a fad and to make maters worse when grunge came out band like Def Leppard became the laughing stock of the world

@@Me37368 and now they're cool again, grunge turned out to be the real trend, and if anybody remembers anything from grunge it's just Kurt Cobain because all the other grunge bands eventually sold out to the modern sound Soundgarden or Dave Grohl in the Foo Fighters. 80s rock eventually won in the end

What I find funny is Def Leppard were pissed at other bands coping them. I wonder if they knew Led Zeppelin was pissed off cause Leppard copied them lol

I don't like the part of the video where they make fun of the bands that came after them. Check out Def Leppard's "Hello America" video, with Joe Elliot trying to look and act like Robert Plant. In the song they are obviously trying to appeal to an American audience by combing the sounds of Led Zeppelin with the Beach Boys. You are only a "Poser" if your music sucks, if your music is good u r legit. It's as simple as that. Ratt was a legit band with a unique distinctive fun sound.

Raft wasn’t a imitator. Their first four records actually had a lot more substance than Def Leppard records . I do like Leppard , but they embraced the sing along hit formula a little too much for me. Rafts record weren’t forced sounding and had a lot of street cred. Their album tracks really carried to day. Leppard sounded too planed out . I do like them though
