When I went up mount silver, I was trying to find a legendary Pokemon.... turns out I found a legendary trainer instead

I went to college, got a job, and had two kids while waiting for Blastoise to die

The first time I battled Red, I didn’t know he was at the top. I didn’t know his team comp or anything. I was surprised to find a guy where I thought a legendary would be. All his Pokémon outleveled mine by at least 12. We kept trading blows until it all came down to one move. My Feraligatr vs his Charizard. Both of us were one shot. I beat him with my only my starter left at 12 HP. It was the most exhilarating and fun Pokémon battle I’ve ever played. They don’t have stuff like this in the new games anymore😭

Fun fact: Red actually blacked out because he was out of usable pokemon!

... Finish Elite 4, only to find out that I still have a whole region to continue. And beat Elite 4 once again. And find out that there is Red, the ultimate champion is meditating on top of a mountain. Oh 2nd gen, I love it.

For anybody who doesn’t know, the reason Red only says “...” is because the player character never has any dialogue. Thus, his lack of speech is intended to maintain this theme, and the “..!” at the end feels much more powerful.

This was definitely one of the most shocking boss fights, like playing this game without any guides or without watching any walkthroughs, Red appearing without any hint and his level 80+ pokemons was actually insane

Never did I think I would see the day I would be scared by a Pikachu, but good god that level 88 pikachu is actually terrifying...

Bro that’s no cap Trainer Red has to be the most coldest boss every just chilling on top of a snowy mountain doesn’t even turn around no words needed to coney what was about to happen 10/10 experience Heart Gold/Soul silver was the best Pokémon game imo

Sensational feeling in these high-level battles… you land a super effective move and their HP decline takes foreverrrrrr before finally reach its resting point. Especially when it was a KO. The new games speed up the animation; takes away all that suspense! New cats will never know what it felt like, like getting a 5:00am house call on a snow day!

I grinded to level 70 thinking that I was overleveling for this fight, boy was I wrong

What I find so epic about his animations is typically trainers only get into fights once eye contact is made so Red giving you a cold hard stare with one eye means shits getting real

I feel after all this years this is still the peak of epicness in Pokémon Story

Red is silent to be humble. If he wins, he don’t brag. If he loses, he don’t whine. He accepts it. And, that’s how we’re supposed to be.

I remember being so surprised and excited by this battle. I had NO idea he was up there, and it’s just so great.

Nothing beats this remake of this battle. I’m sorry the first original fight was great but this remake honestly MADE this battle. The music, the area, the way the sprite moves, it just hits home. Pokémon to people see it as just a kids game, but to us it was more.

I remember as a young kid in pokemon soul silver. I entered Mt.Silver. As I made my way through Mt.Silver I eventually reached the top. When I walked towards the edge I saw a trainer and I was wondering what was going on. I talked to him and the music started playing... My heart starts beating quicker. In a matter of seconds my team destroyed by a lvl 88 pikachu...

That moment when blastoise held his ground more than the whole squad

Bro this is easily one of the most epic gaming moments I've ever had. It felt like I was fighting an evil version of myself lol. The ost made it 10x better too. So fucking cool

This is crazy because it's two main characters fighting over being a main character. That's what separates this from every battle in Pokemon history.

This was intense to watch. You were off to a good start, then Red started using Full Restore. I felt my blood pressure rising.

He just.... disappears... no words :( really carries that silent protagonist thing, and it is so cool to theoretically fight yourself if you'd played as him, I love stuff like that

A good tip - I prefer to use electric types against water types because water types usually know an ice move which is problematic if you use a grass type

This really was the true battle of Pokémon. Two legends with one of them being your original player, who you technically trained yourself and was with them throughout their entire adventure. So cool

You don’t defeat Red. He just allows you to survive

I remember stumbling across him on accident while exploring the mountain. It was so excitingly eerie how he says nothing "...". I got my ass handed to me hard. I was in shock and speechless traveling to the pokemon center. I may have not even beat one of his pokemon; I dont remember, but soon after I had a huge grin on my face. I was so stoked about this secret in the game it made me so pumped. Thanks Pokemon! Great memories...

Ill never forget the feelings of discovering red, getting my crush by red over and over then finally beating him for the first time. Honestly the greatest and most memorable experience ive ever had with a video game

The fact that I still have this game and it's my favorite remake in the whole pokemon series makes me happy

Just think about how terrifying this must be to play completely blind -Professor Oak tells you to check out Mt Silver with no indication of what’s waiting for you at the top -You reach the peak and the music stops. The only sounds are the wind blowing and your footsteps in the snow -One pathway leading to a lone trainer. Interact with him, and he says... nothing -Then the Champion music starts playing -And as soon as he sends out a LEVEL 88 Pokémon, that’s when you know... ...You are NOT ready for this fight.

There's something so ominous about the way he just wordlessly lifts his cap... and looks at you.

Am I the only one that plays Pokémon with the line up on “SET” instead of prompting you to switch your Pokémon after defeating one of your opponents? I like how much more challenging the game is with SET on, it’s like playing competitive online

i remember being very young, maybe 9 or 10 playing heartgold, i had no access to the internet at this age so i, on a whim, decided to go up the the top of mount silver because “i’ve never been there so maybe there’s a cool legendary.” i see this guy at the top and think, “hey that looks like the guy you play as in firered.” what then transpired was the most awesome moment a 10 year old kid could experience. i must have lost to Red 5 or 6 times before i finally toppled his ridiculously strong team. it’s a shame the newer games can’t match this epic battle.

Come on guys, HeartGold and SoulSilver are hands down the best Pokémon games

When Red used a full restore my first time I damn near cried. My soul was crushed.

I still remember how shocked I was when I encountered Red in my first playthrough. I'd never played the original Gold or Silver before.

Me , a 8 year old boy. Fan of the anime and the games. Playing crystal on my gameboy advanced. Founding red on that mountain was probably the highlight of my childhood. I will never forget this feeling, nor the moment.

I just noticed all boss battles in the two first games are overleveled compared to 1) all other npcs and 2) the player itself, and that's probably so you use type advantages rather than just power

They needed this in Gen 5, specifically B2W2, they had the perfect opportunity for you to face the opposing box art legendary (so Reshiram if you played Black and vice versa), as well as their team (Your original Black/White team with the whole link system stuff, or if you couldn't do that, or emulating B2W2, an estimated team).

Can we just take a moment to give respect to Blastoise? My man was out there like Lebron James trying to carry the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA title.

This is truly the ultimate final boss of all Pokemon games. It's almost perfect in any way. Once you defeated the league of both Johto and Kanto there is no more challenge as far as your character knows, you probably caught all legendaries and by this point it would merely a flick of your wrist to you. Even when going in the league again you can practically steamroll every one of the elite four and the champion. So where do you go? To a remote cave called Mt Silver. In there you find not just pokemon who would even give the champion a run for their money but also a long winding path with no place to rest all the way up to the summit. Your limits are tested in the way you navigate the cave, you encounter no trainer at all because, of course, there are no more stronger trainers. Then you reach the summit and you see one person, this person has fought every hardship you had, beat every trainer you beat and made it to the summit of Mt Silver, way before you ever did. You approach him and both he and you don't speak a word to each other because you both know exactly what goes on in each others mind. The battle starts with so much as not even a warning. It has begun, the battle between two trainers who have both surpassed greatly what has been popularly known as the limits of a trainer and it's fought on the top of the most grueling mountain to climb known. As you win the battle a small gesture of shock and respect comes from the trainer who was, until that point, the only one alive you could call your equal. You bested your equal, you metaphorically bested yourself. You became the best you could ever be and in this battle you even surpassed that. Without a word he leaves just as fast as you met him, making place at the top of the world, a spot only deserved by you. It is lonely at the top, but just as he, you know that someday another will come, having grown past his or her own limitations, becoming the next who will be considered the apex. Until then, you wait, silent and calm, til the day arrives that you must once again do battle and see if you still deserve the spot on the top of the world or you'll silently move as well so that another may see the world from the highest peak.

I forgot how slow the health bars move in the old games. But I guess it makes it more tense wondering if ur pokemon will survive
