I love a lot of Benchmade knives, and in this video I will asses every one I've ever bought, sold, or borrowed. Which ones are keepers, which ones suck. You'll see the Freek, Griptilian, Bugout, Monolock, Crooked River, Fact, the Boost, Presidio, Pagan and more. I give an unvarnished assessment on the knives from the sometimes controversial knife maker. These are great Made in USA knives, and are among some of the favorite in my collection. As you can see I have put all of these knives through a lot, and they've always held up pretty well. Full reviews are linked below.

Finding a minor flaw in a knife then using that as a reason to sell it so new knives can be bought that may or may not have minor flaws then later having minor but not major regret about the sale is living the Knife Bro lifestyle. Speaking from experience.

I'm also a watch collector. I do the same thing with watches, and so does every other collector I know. Same thing with gun collectors. Oddly enough I've found most knife guys also tend to be watch guys and gun guys; or maybe it's just me but I've noticed _huge_ amount of overlap in these collecting communities.

Benchmade helped me buy a knife once. I made the mistake of having my wife with me at the knife store and I was going to buy a Buck Mini Spitfire. She looked at the price and said "$30, that seems like a lot for a pocket knife". I knew pointing out the $200 I had spent on that one pair of fancy boots last year. You know, the ones she had only worn twice. That was not going to sway her to my side, and was probably going to start a big fight. So, I just pointed to the $320 Benchmade knife a little further over in the display case. Suddenly she didn't mind me spending $30 on a pocket knife.

Benchmade still gets the juices flowing in the community, just not the same juices that they used to bring out of the community 5 years ago. I’ve only bought benchmades at prices that I felt they were worth. Around 2020 $140 for a benchmade 202 leuku and $190 for a super-freek were pretty reasonable for the quality of knife, since then I’ve only bought them from REI’s closeout sales that are like 30% below MAP or more.

It’s an ancient design, but the (sadly discontinued) BM710 is still among my most carried knives and still remains one of my favourites - since I bought it way back in like 2002. The 530 Pardue remains a favorite as well. I also have a 1st Gen Nimravus I carried on deployment. Honestly though these days except for the Osborne and Claymore OTF Benchmade hasn’t impressed me much in recent years (sorry Griptilian fans but I don’t like the design at all and think it and the minigrip are the most overhyped mediocre folders out there). Benchmade prices have become ridiculous too. In terms of collecting I mostly moved to vintage stuff, and Italian stilettos (switchblades) both traditional and tactical. Think Lelle Floris, Frank Beltrame, AGA Campolin, Latama, Piscitti, etc… But it’s not just my changing taste, Benchmade’s been mostly uninspired and overpriced for some years now IMO. Great blades are now more the exception than the rule. No doubt I’ll get heat for that, but I’ve been into knives since the 1980s and just calling it how I see it.
@flapxjackson
@flapxjackson 4 күн бұрын
If you weren’t aware, Benchmade has updated the 710 with new materials and renamed it the Seven Ten. Be prepared for sticker shock.
@J.DeLaPoer
@J.DeLaPoer 4 күн бұрын
Thanks!! I was not aware, but will check it out asap. I collect knives but not Benchmade in particular, so I don’t really keep up with their releases or anything. IMO the 710 was such an excellent all purpose “tac/tility” design I never understood why it got discontinued. I agree on the sticker shock. BM were never cheap -- I always felt fairly priced for their quality though -- but these days they’ve adopted the HK ethos of -"fuck you"- I mean "prestige pricing", as their marketing strategy. I think I paid $150 for my first 710 c2002, and $175 for a 2nd coated blade version around '09. Can’t wait to see what this Seven Ten costs… EDIT: Ok, less than I expected. The Limited ones are overpriced to the point of being a blatant ripoff though. Also what the hell is with BM's obsession with turquoise these days? The machining pattern is ok I guess, but I'll take the classic black textured G10 scales over _turquoise aluminum_ any day. G10 is inert and virtually indestructible; I dislike aluminum on working knives since they tend to have slippery anodizing and get dented/scuffed/scratched/gouged extremely easily. *At that price it should seriously be titanium ffs*

I like how you present your knives. Like a real dude who collects knives. I want to talk about the chisel grind. You need to use a stone or other flat sharpener. Only sharpen the bevel edge. Go till you feel a burr(20 -17 degrees is best). Strop the flat edge(slightly angled like 3 -5 degrees) to meet the bevel and smooth out the burr. Strop bevel at the same angle you used on the stone( this will smooth out any nicks or inconsistencies in your edge). I agree that is a shit otf by the way and chisel grinds are stupid unless its a Japanese chef knife

same. thin blade works for me. the only benchmade i've kept. had a REI coupon that came in hot 5-6(?) years ago. don't know if could justify the current price. i agree it's soulless out the box but i swapped out for rockscale design scales and the patina/wear has added the charm that was missing.

It was a good, honest run-down on a range of their blades. I've only owned an Ozbourne (abt $300can, now?) and I'm pretty attached to it. Sturdy with crisp action and the S30V steel holds a sharp edge. Got one sent to my Dad and he refuses to use it, because they left the price on the box and he figures he'll just lose it. They're pricey.

Black Friday deal for the Grip led me to this channel probably 3-4 years ago. I got one in S30V with the same orange handle 👍 it was probably about $90, I think regular price was north of 120 at the time. I also found a mini grip. The 20cv model with grey and blue G10 scales and blue spacers, like it as well. Most valuable thing I've ever found, followed by $20 bill here and there. Not a big collector, maybe have 6 knives between those, a Leatherman, couple Moras, and a Case. One Spyderco and I'd feel fully set.

I feel like a majority of Benchmades over the years are just griptilians that put a different outfit on, gotta keep milking that cow i guess. My last one was the 707 sequel after it was discontinued because I always wanted it. I could have just bought aluminum scales for my mini grip for less money overall and had the same knife. I don't regret it, I still like the knife but the point still stands. I didn't care for the bugout, griptilians still better. The crooked river is definitely a baddass looking knife but I thought it was too expensive before price creep started taking hold. So basically my opinion is to just get a full and a mini grip and that concludes the benchmade portion of your collection.

Grandpa tells the wildest stories. Thank you for that. Wish Benchmade would remake/re-release Nimravus. The most frustrating one is the Anthem. Really annoying this stuff sells and the demand is high but still isn’t coming back. I love benchmade but have other stuff. The new 710 is sick looking and I hate that I want it but the limited release and price of the $1500 just bummed me out. It looks amazing but then the price combined with it selling out. I wish you’d reach I he to Holt and get a Morpheus or the other ones. I think it could reignite the fire again. They look amazing.

If you’re not aware, there’ll be a production Seven Ten. MAP is coming in at $405 for aluminium and S90V. Still overpriced in my book.

@@flapxjackson Yeah the black handle with the bronze blade like some of last year’s models. It’s nice but not as cool looking. Or a raw aluminum one? I forget.

I may or may not may not have batoned my Griptilian through a small piece of wood and now I have a little weeble wable on the lock. Did I bend my lockbar? How does yours feel after batoning? I’ve tighted everything and when spin the lock bar 180 degrees, it’s tight.

I ignored all of the noise about Benchmade fit and finish around 2017 or so and bought a 20CV Mini Grip. I should have returned it or sold it because that knife is all wrong for me. I bought the Mini Grip to replace a Delica that I gave to my wife. I miss that knife, but I feel like I can't ask for it back because she was so excited about it.

Benchmade probably has the most noise out of any brand. They make good knives and also they make weird decisions. If you find a winner and can get a good deal that’s the sweet spot

I’m one of those dummies that can’t be bothered to sell anything. My drawers of misfit knives are handy to have around at times. And while I can’t seem to remember a name to save my life, I could quote what I paid for 99% the knives I have and get within ten bucks of the other one percent. And state the Tubers who “Influenced” each one...The Knife Bro name is burned into my brain...Weird

Interesting, no Anthem. It's like a better 940, after you replace the pocket clip... Axis lock without the Omega spring is fantastic.

Been watching your videos on and off for years now. I'm also in late-stage knife collecting and my collection has gotten smaller, not larger. I think I have a Benchmade 940 left but I sold all the other ones. Mostly overprices, basic pocket knives. Soulless, as you said. You and I are too advanced for that shit.

The original Adams’s 275bk. My favorite. Next would be the casbah auto. 940 up there. Honestly tho. In todays knife market Benchmade can’t even compete. Their prices are too high. There’s no value at all. I wouldn’t even buy one today.
