We bought 15x CHEAP 2.5GbE switches and found the best including ones that had 10GbE (10Gbase-T / SFP+), hidden PoE features, and even two managed switches. This was a huge effort so you can have a Buyer's Guide.

@@ACitizen25 I wonder about that sometimes. Some of the older enterprise 10 gig gear is very power hungry. And hot enough youre wasting more energy on cooling. Not so much to justify upgrading last time I ran the numbers, but it was getting there.

@@christopherjackson2157 true depending on generation of it's switch chip it can be more in electrical But there has been over 5-8 switch chip generation since it was released Enterprise If you stay in the last 3 or so power per gb of port is quite cheaper then these 2.5 per port cost (ie port electric cost divided 4 for 2.5 g or 10 for 1gb port power comparison) Sfp or baseT both have there values but sfp if no poe need but T for 10gb poe are wonders on high end wifi backbone

Hi Patrick! Thanks for the continued great work in the space. Have you considered doing a video on a home router replacement setup? Something like the "Crazy Small" router unit, one of these 2.5gig switches, and an AP? The switch and internet plugged into the router, and the AP could be plugged into the switch so that all the local traffic is switched, and all the router has to do is get things to and from the internet.

I ended up getting a Zyxel XGS1210-12, 2xSFP+, 2x2.5Gbe, 8x1Gbe for $170 sometime last year. Managed with typical (sorta crappy) Zyxel management software, but it does support VLANs and such. Not sure if OpenWrt works on it yet, but I think probably? I used one of the SFP+ ports to connect the NAS using a $15 DAC, so cheap and low power (at least compared to an 10G ethernet transceiver).

Based on this video, I decided to purchase the Hasivo S1100-8GT and it has been working flawlessly for my needs. One thing that I *have* been having problems with is finding a good 2.5 Gb PCIe network card that 'just works'. I purchased several TP_-Link TX201 cards that said they 'work with Linux' but going to their website shows that they only support the Kernel "up to 5.17". It will be used in a backup NFS server running TrusNAS Scale.

The TEG-S350 has gone up in price. I bought it back in 2021 and only paid $125 for it. @@landwolf00 Over the last few years things have gotten nuts, I just purchased a used QSW-M2108-2C from eBay for $285 + tax and ended up being just over $300, new they want $449 for this one, very similar to the M408-4C but this one has 8x 2.5gbe and 2x Combo ports, the M408-4C they want $459, IMO I'd save the money and take native 2.5gbe and loose the extra 2x Combo that the other one gives you but to each his own.

We also need someone or folks to be able to spot new units and refresh these over time. Still learning, so I just want to see what people think about this one. If folks like it and share it, then that would be a good signal we are on to something.

Amazon seem to sell the QNAP switches discounted every now and again. At least here in Europe. I bought the QNAP QSW-2104-2T (unmanaged 4x2.5Gbps RJ45 + 2x10Gbps RJ45) for around $135 at the start of 2023. That is basically the same as the tested TRENDnet TEG-S762 or the QNAP QSW-2104-2S-A (but with RJ45 instead of SFP+). Even though I don't have any 10GbE equipment at the moment it felt like a good investment for the future, and the 10Gbps ports are multiports so I can run them at 2.5Gbps as well. So right now I'm using it as a 6 port 2.5Gbps switch. :)

The Zyxel XGS1010-12 is also worth considering. Here in the UK it's only £10 more than the MG-105. It only has 2x 2.5GbE ports but it adds 2x 10GbE so could be very versatile in the home, for example if you have a server you want to connect at 10GbE but don't want the expense of a full 10Gb switch.

We tried to limit to 2.5GbE as a minimum port speed. There are a bunch of switches with 1-2 2.5GbE ports, but with WiFi 6E and soon WiFi 7, folks are going to need at least 2.5GbE to keep up with WiFi.
@mikelovesbacon
@mikelovesbacon Жыл бұрын
@@ServeTheHomeVideo That's true, I just think for £10 more you're getting 25Gbps of throughput on fast ports vs 12.5Gbps on the MG-105. And that's not counting the extra 8Gbps you get from the other 8 ports it has. Sacrificing 1x 2.5Gb port to gain 2x 10Gb and 8x 1Gb could be worthwhile for a lot of use cases.

Broad question: Say I'm upgrading google fiber to 8GB and I want to get the most out of that on two workstations. If I were to buy a switch that had two 10G ports and four 2.5G ports, the cable from my google router would have to use one of those 10G ports as input right? Therefor I'd only have one more 10G for a single workstation? Would running my google router cable into the 2.5G ports bottle neck the rest of the hardwires that are connected to the 10G as outputs?

Hi Patrick! How is the latency between 10Gbit ports and 2.5GBit ports on these switches? I would suppose switch has to buffer the whole packet before re-transmitting it on different medium.

The use of mGig is still iffy for now for things shipping with them, as others are saying, I'm really more interested in 10/25gbe tech at home for a desk or tucked in my media shelves. I still use a little juniper ex2200-12 on my desk for my laptop and desktop that is really more of a vm server now, and a dell n1108 for my media, rest is now all 10g to my servers/storage. I can't really find anything like even the 8 port 10g mikrotik only with copper, but leaning that way with some copper base-t sfp+'s. I am watching ebay for a netgear m4300 for the 8-16 port models patiently to be resold at a reasonable price!

Ok, I'm an old guy and pretty close to the dullest tool in the shed when it comes to this switch stuff. Here's my situation, and I'd appreciate some information on what to do. Recently I upgraded my internet to fiber 2 gigs, and I'd like to hard-wire the output of the modem/router to 3 other devices the rest can be via WI-FI. I have a Mac Studio with a 10 gig port, a Window PC with a 2.5 gig port, and a Netgear 6E router with a 2.5 gig port (like I said, the rest of the household goodies can get the WI-FI from the router). So correct me if I'm wrong, let's say I buy the QNAP QSW-1105-5T. Do I simply plug the modem/router from ISP into port 1, the Mac into port 2, Windows PC into port 3, and Netgear 6E router into port 4??? Or do I need a switch that is has all 10 gig ports. One more thing, NO AliExpress and I don't need POE.
@ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo Жыл бұрын
So long as the as the ISP's router/firewall has a LAN side port then yes. Plug that into the switch and then everything else and you should be fine. The Port 1 will be the uplink to your router/ firewall from the ISP and then everything else on the switch, including clients connected to the connected AP's, will be on the same network. If you wanted something that can use the 10GbE port of the Mac Studio and potentially another 10GbE device, like a NAS, then you could get this QNAP one we reviewed www.servethehome.com/qnap-qsw-2104-2t-a-review-a-4x-2-5gbe-2x-10gbase-t-switch-option/

Thanks so much for putting this video out. Have been trying to figure out how to upgrade to 2.5 and all the options out there. I really really wish there was as 12 port POE 2.5G for 200ish. I have an 8 port poe 1g switch now and want the upgrade plus extra ports but have no use for a really big switch and can't afford one. Is it not possible to make a fanless 12 port model like these? I've got a question about the TRENDnet TEG-S762, and also broadly about 10G ports. So I'm looking at upgrading Google Fiber to either 5GB or 8GB but for that particular switch he mentioned that it does not support 5GbaseT so does that mean if I were to have Google Fiber at 5GB and even if it were input and output through both of the 10G ports, it would be bottlenecked to 2.5G? and if 5GB internet is bottlenecked what about 8GB? Do 10G ports generally support slower networks than the port like 5GB or if the internet isn't 10G would it go down to 2.5G or the net best supported rate?

My biggest problem moving from 1G is the way my network is build in my apartment building. There is single RJ45 for every room and there is multiple computers in every one of those 3 rooms. So I would have to buy 3+1 switches. This is why moving to 2.5G is so expensive. 2 switches would be minimum to get primary computers to 2.5G. One solution would be to buy just one and draw cables across the floor ;)
@robertt9342

I guess the next question is, do you need "everything" on 2.5, and whether everything "needs" or is compatible with 2.5. For me it would be two locations with everything else running of 1gig. In your scenario, I too would find myself requiring two switches.

I'd love to see a review of TP-link TL-R5408PE-AC which is apparently a China-only router with 4 2.5G and 4 FE ports, POE af\at, 110w total budget, up to 30w per port, looks like a built-in omada controller (not sure, they just say "controller" and curiously do not mention Omada at all), fanless, and about 200 USD price. Wonder if it is really workable (people say you can use the Chinese-only interface via a translator like google translate), if there are any other pitfalls, cause it's really hard to find both 2.5G and POE in one box, with a decent power budget, and here it seems it's also a router\controller (whether it is omada-compatible is an open question though).
