SLOW ROAMERS

Жыл бұрын

Some years ago I decided I wanted to live full time in a vehicle and so started out on this DIY Overland Expedition Truck, a rather large project. I started to build a home on the back of a retired military transport truck. After living in "Welly" (a Welland DAF) for almost a year, life took a turn and I decided to sell him. The truck was sold to some fellow Canadian adventure-seekers from the Yukon. Two years later, I reunited with them. Here is the tour video. [Please note: being a last-minute opportunity, this video was recorded on my mobile phone; apologies for all the background noise!]

That’s a nice build, like the pulley system for the bed conversion. Just one note on your electrical system. Your 3000 watt inverter pulls 230amp at full load from your battery bank. Your battery according to its spec sheet only handles 200amp max and 150amp continuous. So just keep in mind that your inverter is oversized for the battery bank. My preferred solution is to add a second battery. I would also at least double the solar input. But yea, Betty looks like a cool build. I’m sure she will serve you both well for a long time.
@SlowRoamers
@SlowRoamers Жыл бұрын
Yeah, we learned the hard way that our battery bank and solar bank were undersized for the inverter setup. I banked on likely never using the surge on the inverter much less the whole 3000w. However, we found that cooking with the induction, even on low/medium heat really sucks down the juice. Meg is not a fan of the induction so it’ll be changed out this summer. Going back to gas.🤷🏼‍♂️
@4philipp
@4philipp Жыл бұрын
@@SlowRoamers induction has many benefits, but with limited electric supply you need to change habits a bit. I have done my own research I to it and come up with some solutions, if I may… 1) use a rice cooker as a pot. I have a 3 cup (uncooked) rice cooker that makes me entire meals. The RC uses 300 watt/h, so rice itself might only use 150 watt. My go to recipe is: fill with 20oz. Water, add 3 chicken thighs, cover, let come to boil. ~20 minutes later, take chicken out, add 1 1/2 cups parboiled rice, add seasonings, stir, cover, set timer for 22 minutes. At 5 minutes remaining I add mushrooms, onion or zucchini/squash, cover, cook until timer is up. Turn to warm mode for 5-10 minutes. Unplug. Serves 1-3 depending on serving size and hunger level. Shouldn’t take much more than an hour cook time, so electric use is =

@@4philipp all good solutions! Although, I don't have much say when it comes to the cooking aspect of our lives. Meg wants propane, so we'll be going with propane. HA!

@@SlowRoamers That's what I figured. But - did you initially build it thinking that this would be the "one" rig for roaming around as you do?

I'd recommend investing in a dynamic or shotgun mic for future videos. The road noise was unbearable, and made an otherwise awesome video a bit tough to watch.

na minha opinião, o seu modelo é o melhor que eu já vi. Aqui no Brasil, todos seguem um padrão de colocar a cama no fundo. Mas o seu conceito de casa aberta, me parece bem melhor.

@SlowRoamers
@SlowRoamers Жыл бұрын
@@borgo1633 A lot of people have asked why I didn't do a pass through. I didn't feel I needed one and the water tank is in the way. It would be too much of a pain to crawl through a small opening like that for me anyway. And, also, I didn't want to cut a large hole in the back of the cab.

How much it cost to build, thanks
@SlowRoamers
@SlowRoamers Жыл бұрын
I built it pre-covid when materials were significant cheaper, so materials & components cost me around $20-25k CAD, the vehicle cost me $16.5kCAD, with other associated costs it was around $40-45k and somewhere around 2000hrs of work.
