My annual 3d mamagram totally saved my life! They were able to catch invasive ductal cancer at stage 1. I'm very thankful for this quick procedure that's quick easy and just a moment of a pinch is so worth it!

Although I very much appreciate your knowledge, I don’t think it’s right to imply that we shouldn’t need to do our own research as well. To say that you ‘do the research so that we don’t have to’ is quite an authoritarian viewpoint . We all need to do our own research as well, as anyone can miss something, & then carefully consider all the knowledge gained, not just information from one person because we are all individuals & no one source is the oracle. Many thanks 🙏🏼❤

Unfortunately my 1st breast cancer was lobular, which wasn't picked up on the mamogram. I was lucky that my surgeon decided to remove the fibroid adenoma to examine it & tests revealed tiny cancer cells. My 2nd cancer was ductal but the lump was very low at the side on my ribs & it wasn't possible to get that area into the machine. Ultrasound scan & needle biopsy confirned the diagnosis on that occasion. I went for my 1st annual mammogram after my mastectomy last week but have to say that because of past failures to detect my cancerI don't have a lot of faith in it finding anything.

Exactly. See the studies below for yourself because super smart researchers, not idiots, are questioning mammograms harms too. Let's end the breast smashing, the trauma, the false negatives and positives, and the ionizing radiation of mammograms!! Now that there is better technology available, why wouldn't we? Let old school retired docs like Dr Liz go retire. We younger gens have real work to do on this! Let's do it now! We will have better options in our day. Don't listen to her on these points saying MRI or Sofia ABUS 3D can't be used. There is evidence that DW-MRI can work for this, it is already working for men with prostate cancer. They just need to get it working for women and women need to stand up and demand contrast-free and ionizing radiation free screening options like DW-MRI. We know that women with dense breasts get nothing from mammograms, why are we exposing these women to this toxic and traumatizing scan that does nothing for them? Until she addresses this question, she is not my doctor. Spread the word, women globally need to ask for DW-MRI. WB-DW-MRI should be at every cancer center for annual whole body cancer screenings for all. Skip these cheap toxic scans like mammograms that miss half the cancers they are there to find and expose us to unneeded radiotoxicity.

Great video! Thank you, Dr O’Riordan. I wonder if you could do a video about prophylactic mastectomy. I got my left breast removed moved last year. I got my first mammogram on my right breast and it came back “Abnormal.” An MRI guided core needle is recommended as the next step. However, when my breast surgeon who perform my left breast reconstruction surgery asked if we are doing a mastectomy and bilateral DIEP flap reconstruction, I said “let’s do it.” But I know I maybe jumping the gun since the “abnormal” result could be calcifications or something else (benign). My ILC was an incidental finding, stage 3 (7 cm x 4 cm), w/micromets on 1 SLN. I’m at high for recurrence according to my oncologist. I had neoadjuvant chemo and it killed 95% of the tumor before surgery. Now I’m on Verzenio x 2 years and letrozole for 10 years. Could you please address this topic, prophylactic mastectomy pros and cons? You can use my case. Thank you in advance! ❤

My breast cancer stage 1 grade 2 Er positive was picked up by a routine mammogram for which I am eternally grateful, I’ve never missed a routine mammogram and have been called back in the past. I have/had 32 FF sized breast I have had a lumpectomy with oncoplasty 8 months ago and now have a smaller breast probably a 32 B cup now I have completed radiotherapy my lovely breast surgeon has offered to reduce the other breast in the using the same method. Will I be given a mammogram or ultrasound before surgery on my remaining breast to check there is no cancer present? I’m worried that if I have this large breast reduced and cancer is found there later it will restrict my options? Thank you surgery next month.

Me too. I'd been on a screening program for family related risk for 20 YEARS! My lobular cell carcinoma was missed by mammogram, ultrasound, MRI with contrast and manual examination. No-one EVER told me about mammogram limitations until was too late, then it was "oh yes ...". It had spread to 16 out of 8 nodes and I'm on the downhill run with Stage 4 widespread bony mets. I had the unaffected breast removed too because, excuse me if I didn't trust it's 'normal' mammogram result. 😡

My question to you was regarding the programme of moving to three yearly mammograms after five years which I reached in November 2023. I am very concerned that I have to wait for three years before I am due another mammogram as I have relied on the yearly ones to keep me sane. Can I request a yearly mammogram under the circumstances? Thank you.

Thanks dr. Liz for a wonderful video. I have a question which is difficult to explain but i hope you will understand me. I always wondered if during surgery, when surgeons cut open the breast to find the tumour, do you see just that tumour near the cut or can you look at the whole breast and find any other lump? Like... how should i put it? Is the breast like a half moulded cheese bar that wherever you cut inside, you get to see just that moulded area and not know if there is another part of cheese going bad or is a breast like a box that when you open, you get to see all the contents of box at once? How do you find multiple tumours in different sides of breast which are suspicious on mammograms but you want to be sure? Do you make multiple cuts or just make one cut and see everything? Also, does a cancer lump have different colour than normal tissue when you cut open and easy to distinguish?

Sadly mammogram & ultrasound didn’t pick up the lobular breast cancer before being diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer. Happy to say it didn’t hurt at all & I too have/had dense breasts. PS the cancer fully regressed in my breast but it had already done the damage.

we don't cut open the cancer. We feel for it and then remove it with a rim of normal tissue all the way around it. We don't look at the rest of the breast tissue as the mammograms and USS have told us where the cancer is

Thank you Liz for posting this video. Always so informative. I know mammograms and US don’t find all breast cancer as this happened to me personally with a second lump being missed after chemo and lumpectomy. My surgeon thought there might be something else and a second op for mastectomy showed DCIS was there. This concerns me in the future as I worry about it being missed again on my other breast. I know mammos are the first line of scanning, but is there any other scan you can recommend if we are prepared to pay privately for it such as MRI?
