I love shallow water ling/cab fishing from small vessels. Agree that the Shadow Stalker is a great rod. I have one of the first they put out which has a split grip. I like the full grip on yours. I also love my Okuma Guide Select swimbait rods for inshore. I tuned out when you started talking about the cattleboat gear and the 1-2oz....I mean POUND🤣 weights and shrimp flies. I like my fish to weigh more than my weights😁 Big baits, inshore, small vessels, and light gear for the win! Another great video though. Made up some of those wire leaders for Soupfin. I'll send you a few if I know where to send them.

Great video. for rockfish my " old man save my back and wind all day" best setup is a 2speed with a 2:1 low gear, level wind mechanism if (you can find one) braid line fished on a broomstick as for casting in rockfish areas hundred feet or deeper there is no casting everything comes back to the boat after about a hundred feet and you're fishing straight up and down

Great Vid... I live in Alaska and have been fishing rockfish for over 40 years. I noticed that you had a Avet MXL. Match that to a Shimano Trevala S series C4S TVSC-63MH. I am telling you it will be a vast improvement over the Trevala you are currently running. I know, I have both of these rods in my arsenal. The Newer C4S is lighter, more sensitive and has more power. This is the pole my wife uses above all others combined. This rod has caught every rock fish we have, ling cod to 58" her best so far. and even one 120# Halibut. Most of our depth are from 30' to 225'. If you have the coin try it. If you do not like it, let me know I will buy it from you. I am that impressed by this rod. I use the next lighter rod (TVSC-63M) with a Avet SX, and it is my new go to for the rock fish & lings. I have not broken the 100# halibut but have pulled a 65# up. Keep up with these videos. I may not agree on everything but you are on the right track. In the mean time rip some lips...

Wait! What about the Ugly Stik?!😂 Great informative video for people like me. I purchased a Lexa 300 line counter paired with a 6'6" Trevala specifically for boat fishing. Had to do a lot of research because there are not many videos out there covering the topic for Nor Cal fishing that your video covered. Sort of wish I got the larger 400 Lexa for the line capacity. Now I may have to look into those Okuma bait caster with the clicker. Thanks for the upload.

I like that you reel lefty on everything. I’m the same way. I’m right handed but reel with my left. Never made sense to me to cast right handed then switch the rod to the left hand and reel with the right hand with a baitcaster. You want to do the hard work with your dominant arm and the easy work, reeling, with your left.

The Avet MXj is bae af! Takes getting used to the lever drag but the power you get is ridiculous for such a tiny reel. For the beginners: I agree braided line reduces lag time (due to no stretch) during hook sets & jigging, as well as help with sensitivity, but from experience, if you're fishing 300-450ft deep water (Socal peeps) extra sensitivity really doesn't matter due to the increased sinker weight. At that point a circle hook and jigheads with extra sharp hooks do the work for you and saves your wrist lol. Also mono is great if someone is new to rockfishing and still has to learn how to set their drag to compensate for sink speed based on sinker weight, work the current, and NOT TANGLE 10+ ppl at once...lol. Because braid tangles are farrrr worse and near impossible to work with compared to mono. Tangles are inevitable in charter boats, but if you don't know what you're doing and tangle a lot of ppl, you'll just piss off the boat and waste valuable line & fishing time. Tight lines ya'll and great video!

Looking to update my rockfishing rods. I've tried some Teramar rods that were too stiff, some glass rods that weren't sensitive enough. Looking at the Trevala TVC6'6MH like you recommended, but I've seen some people complain that they're too parabolic and not a fast enough tip. In SoCal, we usually fish 12oz in 250' for water. I'm curious your opinion on the medium/medium fast action on this rod. Also, I use the Shimano Tekota level wind reels, its a great alternative to the bass-type baitcasters.

Totally new to the sport, I have only been out three times and I’m totally hooked. Thank you for all the fantastic information, it’s hard to know where to start and your channel definitely clears much of the confusion. I’m interested in rock fishing with future hopes in landing some lingcod here in Southern California. A great friend of mine hooked me up with a Saltist 40 super torque as a welcome to the sport starter. I’m considering the Teramar 8’ as you suggested but also keeping an open mind with the Phenix PSX-809 because of their warranty and how close I live to their factory. Any personal recommendations on what I might check out? At this stage of the game I am trying to make my dollar count although I’m pretty sure I will eventually go down the rabbit hole.

thx for the feedback. the 808 is by far the most popular model up here in that phenix range (party boat staple) with the 809 reserved for guys who lean towards sturgeon too. if you have bluefin, yellowfin and yellow tail in your sights, the 809 would probably be best fit for you. enjoy your new obsession:)

@ishwithfish 5 жыл бұрын
sup man, so i've used the lexa 300 and tranx 500. imo, the shimano is a more refined version of the lexa and casts a bit better than the lexa, but i don't think it's quite worth the extra $100 in difference. i would go with lexa and save the extra 100 on lures, a bg, or beer! :)
@alexanderx33

Yeah, thumb bars are great but what makes it even better is if you have a line counter and know before you get to the bottom if your getting close. You can also see exactly how much more line your having to let out than the bottom depth and that tells you if you need to speed up or slow down the drift. Also if there are suspended black rockfish you can target the depth they are hanging out at. Okuma coldwater LP 354. No contest for rockfishing. And under $150.

Does anyone have a recommendation for choosing a second rod? I go charter boat fishing at the farallon islands a lot. My main setup is a ugly stick elite paired with a avet sxj. Its perfect for fishing shrimp flies and trap rigs using 16oz weights but I am looking at getting a second lighter setup for jigging butterfly jigs and swimbaits in the 7-8oz range. I have a Piscifun Torrent reel that I would like to pair with the lightest possible bass rod capable of handling up to 8 oz. Please let me know what ya'll would recommend :) EDIT: This setup won't be used a lot so I'd like to keep it on the cheaper side. (Otherwise I would go with a shimano trevala)

tbh i do very limited shore rockfishing, but my friends uses a minimum 10' heavy action surf rod with a 6000 spinning reel. need the length and heavy action to get the fish out of the rocks.

Going to start fishing here in the lakes around Austin. Will eventually fish for the massive carp that are just catch and kill. I have no gear what so ever and have no idea what is ideal. Any ideas?
@ishwithfish

sup man, that's so cool! i hear carp is an awesome species to catch, tricky hard fighters. tbh i don't know too much about catching them, but i do know you float dough baits and corn, and use a baitfeeder/live liner style reel to let the bait drift naturally. a very patient style of fishing.

yup! perfect reel and size. i have a Tranx 500 and it's overkill for everything in the bay area (except maybe an overslot sturgeon), a 400 is great.

absolutely! go with with higher speed reel if you can, reeling up from 200'+ gets tiring, need some line speed. the 8.1:1 i believe. if your crank arm gets tired, lift rod up, crank as you point rod down, let the rod do the lifting.

Good stuff, but two things that I was hoping would be covered were not. 1. In Florida, long accurate casts were the thing. Fishing for lincod in the kayak in PNW I keep getting the line wrapped around the guides. Is there a way to avoid that, it seems that it doesnt happen as much with the bait caster though. 2.Fighting a fish with conventional gear is so dang awkward!
