Very good video. All you need now is a Central Tyre Inflating System (CTIS), something we have on the exact same truck as yours. There is nothing better than approaching a different surface that is better suited to another tyre pressure, all one needs to do is press two buttons; one for the steer axle and one for the drive axle. We continue driving and adjusting our speed until we reach correct pressure, same deal for deflating. We have adapted our existing 24V ARB compressor for the job, because we had it. As the CTIS requires all Schrader valves to be removed, the compressor has a very easy job. We air up from sand pressure to highway pressure in about 5 minutes, both axles. It would be a bit quicker, but the CTIS inflates, stops, checks the axle pressure, then continues inflating. I would be adding a water filter. We have our ARB tank running a drain valve like yours and at the end of each day we let it rip and watch the water/air come out. After the tank we have the water filter and having just finished a 2½ month trip through sand dunes, tracks and stacks of dirt roads interspersed with rural bitumenised roads, meant that we were going up and down several times each day. I found very small amounts of water in the water filter which I emptied approximately once a week. For us with a CTIS fitted, the water filter is required as moisture through the sensors into the tyres is not a good thing, everything has to be kept dry. For you not so much, but it does show that some small amounts of water will probably get into your gear. Never heard of that company. looks like a very good compressor unit. If (when) our ARB unit fails, I'll more than likely replace it with a Serious Air unit. that said, I'll look into the company you got your compressor from; nice to have options. For your information, our CTIS has the ability to run trailer tyres as well. Meaning you could have your steer axle, drive axle, as well as your caravan axles, all running on a CTIS. Australian made and manufactured.
@nowhereboundtouring
@nowhereboundtouring 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Allan, Thanks for watching and commenting. I would love a CTIS, but I’m not sure the extra plumbing around the wheels would suit us. A good example would be going through Najkala Rocks on Fraser Is, or very deep carved in tracks or thick scrub. Have you had any issues in these sort of conditions? Cheers, karl
@allanhugh2044
@allanhugh2044 2 жыл бұрын
@@nowhereboundtouring Mine is a single cab chassis version, on the drivers side there are two fuel tanks which are a little inboard of the tyres, let alone the CTIS pipes which are obviously outside the tyres. My fuel tanks now have railway tracks gouged into them from scrub, but the pipes from the CTIS are unmarked; they are really tough. When I visited the factory to ensure if their system could handle the large articulation of the front wheels and still not interfere with the underside of the cab and other stuff, I was invited to hit that pipe with a steel hammer. I did give the pipe several severe whacks on a steel bench with a steel hammer, not a mark worth talking about. As for going through the Najkala Rocks section, I very closely watched your footage including freeze framing to see if the CTIS would get through. I believe it would have, tight, but doable. That said, going through something where the whole of the wheel/tyre was sliding on a wall of mud, is not going to look good. Pretty much you can slide on the walls on the rear wheels to about 50% from the bottom, possibly a bit more. For the front I would think around 75% as the steer pipe is coming over the middle top of the tyre then angles. The steer axle pipes are around 60/70mm clear of the tyre, the drive axle pipes are around 90/100mm clear of the tyre.

Hi Peter, I think that the ARB compressor is suitable for the majority of set ups like you have. Once you move to higher pressures, it does not perform and does not last. I think they have just stretched the truth on the its specifications a bit to much. Thanks for watching. Cheers, karl.

Your still limited by your smallest fitting, I.e tire valve that sucker only has a couple millimeters of room for air flow. To pump up faster and have less load on the compressor I’d recommend running an air hose that can pump all your trucks and trailers tires at once. That weak point of let’s say 2mm gap times 8 now is a 12mm gap so the pump will lower its pressure as less back pressure and pump more cfm. Also upgrade to agricultural valves as they are 12mm over 6mm of from memory

@nowhereboundtouring
@nowhereboundtouring 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is what sets it apart from other compressors. If you think about power in equals power out ( minus losses), you get the idea. Other lower power units ( that are normally over stated) just can’t live up to what they advertise. I think that since we are full time travellers we have realised this issue before others ( that have a similar requirement to us). I thought that the ARB compressor was suited to our needs, but I was wrong. When you are in hot areas, 45 deg, and you pump up your tyres, in the sun, any compressor that is working near its limit, just can’t handle that use repeatedly. 👍

What a great pump!!! I always thought my Endless Air 9cfm unit was the best available. That electric unit is a pearler.....but at 3 grand, the one that has my name on it will be sitting on the shelf for many years...hahaha. My air system is always ON....as soon as the engine starts, it builds pressure ( assuming the pressure switch has even triggrred). I only run mine at 100psi and have it plumbed to my Airsafe Hitch, air operated UHF antenna, as well as a huge set of Kleinn Demon 730 air horns. It's quiet, and once fitted, only requires the occasional squirt of grease.

Gday Bill, I did start to look at the endless air units, but they never returned my enquires. I think that the system setup we now have is better suited to us, so it has all turned out great. Gday Benny, I really wanted to keep the compressor all contained in the canopy: way out of mud, water and bull dust’s way, and if we ever put the canopy on another truck, it is all in there. I made that decision when we built it all, hence the water tanks are also in the canopy. PS I’m still excited at no more 45 minutes to re inflate. Hmmm 95 psi is a bit low……

Great to watch this vid and it is definitely horses for courses ! You guys are driving something only a handful of people would for their retirement touring and this is choice knowing the bigger vehicle the more heavy duty accessories and custom work will be required as well as your LR licence that requires certain rules and regulations. We have been building our 200 series ready to hit the road end of this year and I’m already disappointed with a load of things with the Toyotas lack of engineering and ability to simply mod… and then have limitations to 4495 GVM upgrade but still only 6800 GVM which is not a lot when you want to travel in comfort with your tools and toys! Karl , what did you do before this mate? You obviously have a lot of nous and mechanical ability which is awesome for remote travel! Hi Tony, You are correct, but now there is a very big trend toward larger ( bigger gvm) vehicles in Australia. The issue that we have experienced will soon become more frequent. The reason why we originally went to our truck was some of the thoughts that you are experiencing . I am an industrial electrician by trade, electrical project manager and goat farmer, with a very sound mechanical ability. “If others can do it, so can I” is what I always think😄. Very clever on the “ new tires” thought 👍, but I think you should re guess a bit higher.

We tested and used the compressor for a reasonable amount of time ( maybe equivalent to pumping up our 4 tyres 3 times before it started to hint of slowing down. Gday Luke, So far the compressor is performing great. I fully expect it will keep doing this for many years to come. I have been using it for tyre inflation ( which the ARB twin compressor could not handle) pneumatic drill and blowing down parts, chainsaw etc. The hot weather dos not appear to affect it, and it has never cut out on over temp or low voltage. It is by far one of the best accessories I have added. When other truck owners enquire about it, my recommendation is to not bother with anything else, and just pay the higher cost ( compared to other lower performance and reliability compressors), and get this unit. Just so you know, I am not involved with the supplier in any way, it is just my honest unbiased opinion. It is by far truly the best compressor I have seen and used. Cheers, karl
