I use a plug-in surge protector for a specific reason. As soon as I get to a site, I plug it in to check the power before we do anything else. That way, if there is an issue, I go right back to the office to ask for a different site. I then repeat the process. I have found a Mom & Pop place where several sites had an issue. They had been doing their rewiring.

@@RVgeeks - The ability to see the WATTS used in real time is worth the entire price to me. Sure, I could go around the rig plugging in individual meters on various devices to find out use... but to be able to simply walk around the rig and turn things on and off to troubleshoot a power-hungry device that might not be so easy to put an individual meter on (and monitor it from the comfort of your chair) is worth it to me. Thank You for the very educational video. I purchased both a surge protector, then afterwards, an Autoformer. Only by logical evaluation that I would hook up the Autoformer, then the Surge Protector. Now my power into the RV travels from the RV Power Pedestal, to the Autoformer, then to the Surge Protector, and then on to the RV power panel. Your video verified my assumptions, because I had no clear direction from any other source, but this video.

Great video and a good job explaining how and why you did your installation. I may be upgrading to a Autoformer as I have had low/fluctuating power in a couple parks on this trip.(North East) My surgegard has protected me but it can't do anything about low power. Many places in this part of the world are older and don't have the infrastructure to support modern coaches.

@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan. With due props and respect to your expertise and experience, we’re aware that a plug is of course not as robust a transmitter of power as a solid, unbroken cable. However there are a couple of reasons we’re comfortable that this very useful mod is within our comfort zone when it comes to safety. First is the very high quality of the components. Hughes gear (including the plugs) is top notch, so we’re not depending on cheaply made parts. Second is the fact that this is a semi-permanent installation, only unplugged in the rare/unlikely event of the need for a repair to one of the units, or to access the rear panel for further mods. If this were a connection that would be being plugged and unplugged on a routine basis, we’d have greater concern that the VERY tight, solid connections we now have would be loosened over time from repeated/frequent plugging and unplugging.

That's a sweet setup. Hope my Surgeguard lasts a long long time but if and when it needs replacing I know what I'd replace it with. Been ok without the Autoformer so far but I'm in Cali now and some of the parks seem sketch so I may be in the market for one soon. At least the Surgeguard will shut me down if voltage drops too much to prevent damage. Not optimal but better than nothing protecting me.

I have an experience which I would like to share. Once upon a time, I installed a 30 amp power plug on the side of my house, to be used for my "Older " RV pad. I didn't think that it would be wired up any differently then a 220V dryer plug, but found out differently after I powered it up, and hooked up the RV. Without the protection of a surge protector, or Autoformer, I powered up the 30 amp pedestal on the side of my house, then plugged in the 30 amp cord from my RV. I immediately herd a popping sound, and saw smoke floating from several appliances. I found that I burned up my Microwave, the electric fireplace, and my 120V to 12V Converter, all because I wired up the pedestal wrong. If I would have used a surge protector, it would have saved all of my appliances, but as it was, it cost me several thousand dollars to replace everything. Therefore, I have a personal testament of the value of a surge protector, and Autoformer. My new RV, has approximately $10,000.00 in Victron Energy solar equipment, which I want to protect. I am going to invest in the surge protector, and Autoformer as described in this video to protect my investment. Thank You

Been using the Hughes Autoformer since your original video was made, and prompted me to get with the program. Since you are "plugged into the Autoformer Company" so to speak, have they EVER come up with a weatherproof cover for the unit when you have it sitting outside by the pedestal? I was talking to the company President at a rally a ways back, and he said they were thinking about doing that. I even offered to be his test guinea pig. We house our autoformer & Progressive EMS in a large Rubbermaid Tub, which gets the job done, but looks a little wonky! Our Dutch Star DOES NOT have as large of a power bay as your rig.

Always a joy to watch your DIY stuff. So you’ve made all these upgrades on the power system, are you satisfied with outcome. And would it be worth the cost?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dan! As far as the power protection, we're absolutely thrilled with the outcome. But this is the ultimate setup. If someone wants to get the most bang for the buck, as opposed to having it all, the Power Watchdog alone is an amazing value, being less expensive than competitive products, while providing far more features. The autoformer is the most expensive piece, and the only thing you'd be missing without it is the voltage boosting capability. The cord reel is maybe our favorite piece of gear on the whole RV! We love the battery system, but it's a big investment, and may not fit everyone's RVing style. We love it though.

Awesome coincidence! If you want to start out with the best bang for the buck, we can't recommend the Power Watchdog highly enough. We'd start with that, knowing you can always add an autoformer later if you want to.

Great system, but why not put it AFTER the transfer switch so that it protects from the generator as the source, not just the pedestal?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 жыл бұрын
That's a neat idea, Jim. But since the generator is a known, reliable source of steady power, protection from it isn't the kind of issue we all get when we hook up to various park pedestals. But we hadn't thought of it, and will consider a mod based on that, although at first glance, we're thinking that the boosting part of the equation might be less desirable there, as it might mask a slow failure of the generator.

Please explain the purpose and/or need to have surge protection from the Autoformer and the Watchdog? I thought that surge protection should not be daisy chained together. The reason I am interested is that I would like to install the Huges Autoformer in my RV in place of my built-in surge protector as I do not have the space to have both. Thanks for your video.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 2 жыл бұрын
Hey RJW. Primarily, it's because you can't get all the features in one unit. The Watchdog with EPO will automatically cut power at high/low voltage settings... but the Autoformer won't. While the Autoformer will boost low voltage to protect electronics and high-inductance appliences like our air conditioners and residential fridge, which the Watchdog doesn't. Don't know of any specific issue with having the surge protectors in line with one another (Hughes has never indicated it was a problem), so we have ours wired with the Autoformer first in line (closest to the pedestal) so it can boost the power if it's low. Then the Watchdog next, so if the voltage exceeds/drops below the Autoformer threshold, the Watchdog can protect us. If you use JUST the Autoformer, you'll lose the cut-off at high or low voltage. If you only have room for one device... we'd opt for the PowerWatchdog w/EPO (lots of great features and protections), unless you have a specific scenario where you already know you're going to be exposed to low voltage (it's less common). Hope that helps!

@@RVgeeks HI, well, Hughes never got back to me, too busy I guess, so upon further investigation I found that another RV'er had the same question some time back and did get a response from Hughes here it is... "I recently read about this very concern, so I emailed both PI and Hughes (since I had no idea). Hughes replied back saying it was a non-issue. (He also explained MOVs briefly.) From what I can tell by researching the subject, most/all contexts of "don't daisy-chain surge protectors" are about power-strips. I think power-strips tend to be referred to as surge protectors in many discussions. Since power-strips can only support a limited amount of current, there are valid reasons to not daisy-chain them."

Not sure why Hughs didn't incorporate this into the autoformer. Since it has almost the same features should be just a simple thing to do, except now they can charge more when you have to buy 2 instead of 1. I have read that autoformers will be soon illegal in RV parks here in the US, due to a change in the electrical code. Wonder if you plan to continue to use them or remove it.... nah don't answer I would keep it too...

Curious if you had any concerns with the number of plugs being used. Plugged connections can be the source of high heat generation if there is any looseness or issues with an individual connector. I am thinking of doing the same thing that you have done, but have a little bit of concern adding all the connections into the power source.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob! You’re right that plugs can be a source of heat, or poor connections. But it’s primarily the plugging and unplugging of them that’s the problem. Very solid, high-quality plugs (which these are), that are left plugged in all the time, aren’t an issue. We almost never have any reason to remove any of these components, since they simply work and don’t need to be touched, so we have never had any problem at all with our set up. We suggest that as long as you’re planning to do the same thing, and leave the components plugged in the vast majority of the time, you should have nothing to worry about.

Does the autoformer only apply to power coming in from the pedestal, and not from power coming from the generator?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 3 жыл бұрын
The way we have ours installed, yes. It’s only inline with shore power. In theory, you could wire it differently so that it boosted either shore or genny power. But since our generator puts out a rock solid, inverter stabilized 120V, we didn’t have a need for that.

There is some redundancy, but the autoformer doesn’t offer high and low voltage cut out. It boosts low voltage as needed, which of course be Power Watchdog doesn’t. We’re also not seeing where they offer Bluetooth as part of an autoformer. Maybe we’re missing it?

Very nice. Doesn't the new Autoformer have the same surge protection as the watchdog? Why would you use both? Thank you,
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Wil! Both have a substantial 4,800 joules of protection. While there is some redundancy of features, the reason we've added the Watchdog is for the bluetooth alerts and the EPO (Emergency Power Off). As we said, it's pretty ultimate protection. If we were recommending one vs the other vs both, when cost is taken into consideration, the Power Watchdog alone is a pretty amazing piece of gear for the money, less expensive than competitors that have a lot fewer features and specs. Without the autoformer, you don't get the voltage boosting ability of course, but all the other protective features are still available in the Watchdog.

Hi Mike! We hope you love your Autoformer & Watchdog as much as we love ours! Our Autoformer hasn't ever gotten to a temperature that we'd call "hot", but it does get fairly warm... more so, the worse the incoming voltage is. Our electrical compartment is fairly well filled, but our Autoformer has space on all sides, because Hughes recommends installing it so it has some air/space around it to help it keep cooler. So plan your location accordingly. Hope this helps!

Can I use a 30 to 50 adapter with the Hughes 50 amp autoformer? And 50 amp EPO? I fully realize when doing so I limit myself to 3600watts. Some campgrounds we go to only have 30 amp service. My worry is will the auto transformer not work due to only having 1 hot wire coming in. Same with the EPO, so I usually disconnect the 2 devices so I don’t have any problems when I do this. I have a Hughes 50 amp Autoformer and EPO and love it. I would love to be able to leave it on all the time especially when I get stuck on 30 amp only service.

Hi Marvin! We are in the same situation you are, with a 50 amp RV, and quite often plugged into 30 amp service. You can and should absolutely keep your Hughes units plugged in all the time. It will protect you, and work perfectly. We never unplug ours. The way the 30 amp dog bone is wired, it provides power to both legs, and everything will work great with Hughes protecting your entire rig properly.

If the autoformer is first in line, is the watchdog needed as the autoformer should boost low voltage and take care of spikes?
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Lester! The Power Watchdog protects us from very low voltage situations, where the power is even too low for the autoformer to boost it, and very high voltage, where it will cut power altogether. You don't HAVE to have both, but it's the ultimate protection to have both.

Hi Bill. You could wire the surge protector in between the transfer switch and the RV. But that shouldn’t be needed, as the generator is a very stable and reliable source of power.

Hey guys, didn't know where to post this but I have a 2000 Newmar 3865 Dutch star with almost 200,000 miles on it and love it big time. My question is My living room slide out lights have quit working, they worked but all of a sudden they just quit for no rhym or reason. My manuals show some wiring diagrams but I am unable to find any fuse or wire that blew or came disconnected. Everything else works fine just those lights and I have already checked the switches and there is no power going to switches. What should I do? Thought of calling Newmar and seeing what they might say but I've never called them and I'm sure they could care less with a little guy like me. Any ideas? Thanks
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Yanmarman! Wow! 200,000 miles? That's great!!! We hope Newmar built 'em as good in '05!! 😉 Not sure exactly where to suggest you begin on this lighting issue. It's possible it's a fuse... RV manufacturers (Newmar's no exception) seem to like heto sprinkle them all over the RV, without any seeming rhyme or reason! Our 12V living room lights are controlled by a fuse block in the cabinet over our toilet. But we have fuses in the very front driver's-side compartment (mostly chassis-related).... and more behind a black plastic panel in our electrical bay (where the power cord comes in). Plus random, individual, inline ones in some odd places. If you're not seeing power at the switches (not 100% sure Newmar doesn't switch the GROUND wire, so check for continuity with a good ground to see if that's the case or not), you're going to need to find your way "upstream" toward the battery to find out where the failure is. If it's not a fuse... it could also be a bad ground wire... again, on our coach, the ground wires for the "house" electrical loads (like lights) come together at the fuse block in the toilet-room cabinet... not sure if yours would be the same. It's ALSO possible, since the lights are in the slide, that the wire has been compromised/shorted somewhere in the transition between the frame/body and the slide. There could be a pinch point in one of the runs of cable coming up through the slide. Sorry we can't be more specific on this one, but let us know how you make out... or if you have any other questions. We may be able to help you sleuth this out! (although a call to Newmar never hurts... we've always found them to be VERY helpful, and they could be able to point you to something that solves your problem right away! Besides... the worst they can do is say "Nope... can't help ya!" LOL!)

Quick question. I installed the internal hard wire kit today along with my 50A Surge Protector all mounted within the electrical compartment. I have been considering the Autoformer as well. I noticed in the video that your electrical compartment is pretty tight and am wondering if you have any cooling issue with the Autoformer or the Surge Protector? Not sure if fans would be needed if I put it all components in my electrical compartment, but yours is about the same size so curious on your findings to date.

@RVgeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob! We do indeed have a lot of stuff packed into our little electrical compartment! But the autoformer, power watch dog, and even the solar controller being in there don’t put off enough heat to cause a problem. We’ve never noticed it being especially hot in there, and have never had any problem with any of the components. If you have something else in there that generates a lot of heat, or you notice it getting especially warm in there, you may have a different situation. But we have no special cooling, and everything works great!

Do you need a Power Watchdog with a Hughes Autoformers RV220-50-SP Voltage Booster/Surge 50 Amp
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Technically? No. But it depends on what you are looking to protect your RV from (and whether or not you want to be able to view data about your power usage). The Autoformer provides surge protection and, of course, ensures that the voltage is boosted when possible. But it doesn't offer over/under-voltage protection OR the Bluetooth link to view power status, etc. The Power Watchdog with Auto Shutoff (they offer a model WITHOUT the Auto Shutoff, but we think it's important to have) gives you surge protection, under/over-voltage shutoff, and the Bluetooth data feed. So you can use either one alone... but using the two together (like we do) gives you the most protection from all conditions. We have the Autoformer inline before the Watchdog... so if incoming voltage is low, the Autoformer can boost it. If the incoming voltage goes above/below the bounds of the Autoformer's capabilities, it shuts off it's boost and then the Watchdog can react to the incoming power as appropriate. Hope this helps!

Is heat buildup in the power bay from all these components a problem? Is it vented? A Master Electrician told us in a Electricians class that electric motors can tolerate without damage 10% over voltage but only 5% under voltage. Maybe it should shut off sooner than a drop to 104 volts.
@RVgeeks
@RVgeeks 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gregg. We haven't had any issues with heat build-up in that compartment... and it is NOT vented. The Autoformer stops boosting below 104 volts, but keep in mind that at 104 volts, the Autoformer is boosting by 10%, so your devices/appliances are seeing closer to 114 volts (which is right at the floor of the 5% under voltage a motor can tolerate). The fact that it stops boosting below 104 is why we also have the PowerWatchdog installed downstream from the Autoformer... since once the Autoformer stops boosting, the PowerWatchdog would then see the 104V incoming power and would then cut power to protect all onboard equipment.

Oh, and as for the "texting"... the Power Watchdog doesn't "text" your phone. It's only a bluetooth connection sending an app notification and only works when you are within range (basically in and around the RV). There is a third-party device from rvwhisper.com that makes the connection between the Power Watchdog and the internet so you can receive alerts when you are not onboard... but it does require that your RV have a steady internet connection.
