The NERF PRO GELFIRE MYTHIC gel blaster is well-built and solid, but it's lacking in punch. The stock velocity is a bit low at about 150 FPS, when the Gel Blaster SURGE Gen 2/3 achieves 175 FPS. The GB SURGE Gen 2/3 uses a spring that is about 1.5 coils longer to achieve the higher speed. By swapping the stock NERF spring with the GB SURGE spring, the NERF MYTHIC blaster can hit 180 FPS with no issues. Since the gears inside the NERF MYTHIC are slightly larger than the standard gears in most pistol-style gel blasters, the durability of the gearbox with the stronger spring should not be an issue.

NERF Gelfire Mythic proves to be a very nicely built and well-designed blaster, but it lacks in power and therefore range. It is best suited for CQB (close-quarters battle) where stealth and strategy is more important than range. It feels much more solid, better quality and feature-rich than competitors of the same size and style. But it also costs as much or more than much stronger rifle blasters like Splatrball SRB400 and SRB1200 or UNLOCX pistols.

I dunno how everyone else feels about this, but I like to watch the mod process as unedited as possible, instead of snipping out the boring bits I enjoy seeing the full process. Edit: one other thing you can try to increase the FPS further is switch to a tight bore aluminium/metal barrel (7.0mm internal diameter), it would be cool to see how much further you can push this.

So, is this video to your liking? I snipped out unnecessary parts from the What's Inside video and focused on the spring mod. My goal with these videos is to leave enough that you can recreate it. It would be hours long if not edited 😂

@Engineerable at the end of the day, it's still fun and informative to watch. For me it feels fast paced but maybe more people prefer that. Doesnt have to be fully unedited but maybe there is a middle ground. Take what i say with a grain of salt though, your format may resonate better for your other viewers, i might just be an outlier.

There aren't any metal gears available since they use a custom size.

By any chance, would you happen to have a link to buy the spring separately? Wouldn’t want to buy a surge just just to pull the Spring out and put it in the nerf.

Unfortunately, I don't think this spring can be bought off the shelf. I happened to have a dead SURGE Gen2. You might be able to take an M80 airsoft spring and cut it down to size. That's the softest airsoft spring you can buy.

There are diminishing returns to pushing it much further. New motor could increase fire rate, but hopper gravity fed blasters have a limited feed rate, and will misfire more b

I hope someone still will see this post even though this video has been up for a good while now in youtube time. I was wondering, what if I don't have a spare sitting around that conveniently has a spring that is bascially perfect to make it shoot harder, can I buy a spring at a local hardware shop?? Also, is there any way to extend the barrel length? I hate how short it is, I feel like it would make it fire more accurately and possibly further with the stronger spring.

The easiest solution would be to buy an airsoft spring and cut to length. TBH, better off buying a better blaster than try to mod this one too much, like longer barrel. Barrel length needs to be proportional to the cylinder volume.

Increasing battery voltage will not increase the power, only the rate of fire.

If I add a plastic ring between the spring and the orange piece to increase the load on the spring instead of changing the spring, do you think it might work the same?

You can try. If there's enough extra compression length, it will work. It's possible that could also compress the spring past it's design limit, causing it to yield over time as it is cycled.

You can try, and that would increase the force initially, but would decrease the lifespan and cause it to fatigue faster and fail. The springs were designed for a specific length, and compression and usually heat treated. Notice how the stronger spring is not stretched, but has more coils. Stretching the spring to the point that it plastically deforms and remains stretched will affect the preset and design parameters. The spring is more likely to get stressed when compressed again. This may not be an issue in a device that has low operating cycles, but a gel blaster subjects the springs to 100's of thousands of cycles.

How do you stop the gel balls from failing to feed? I can get about 5-6 balls out before you have to shake it to get them to fire…

Is this with the gel balls that came with it? Try different brand of gel balls. This hopper design doesn't have the best feeding.

The one with the slide velocity adjustment? Probably, because the max FPS is also ~175. Haven't taken the 1.5 gearbox apart yet though.

I haven't, but people say that 3D printed hop ups suck for high powered blasters, because they break. However, they may be fine for low power blasted like Nerf Mythic. So I would try it first before making a conclusion.

@@jsanchez9084 I see, I looked it up and looks like it would work fine. It's a non-adjustable design, but that means there isn't the adjustable tongue inside that breaks like on the other 3D printed hop ups, so this one should be stronger.

@Engineerable yea I've use it for one day seems ok so far there isn't too many upgrades for this blaster but I bought it to play with my 9yr old son so not worried about fps too much he has a gel blaster surge and I got this one on sale

@Engineerable I used the 3d printed hop up some more and tested and can say it does increase the range by a good 10-15 feet I source my own orings instead of using a rubber band like the ad on etsy states works really well
