In this video I give a complete overview of the A&D FX-120i lab-grade reloading scale (technically a balance). I cover unboxing, setup, and overview, calibration and measuring a single kernel of gunpowder. If you need the utmost precision in powder measurement, this is a great for the tool for the job.
Disclosure: I was provide a sample unit (balance) for this article from Cambridge Environmental (a retailer, not he manufacturer). Cambridge Environmental is the preferred vendor of Adam MacDonald (inventor of the AutoTrickler system which uses this scale).

Just got this scale about a month ago. It is quick and it resolves the weight of colonels of powder. Best scale I have owned. Used a Grissly bald Eagle and a Gempro 250.

Gavin, Just an FYI to you and others on precision balances. For 1-point CALIBRATION, the test weight should be at the center of the pan. To VERIFY calibration, check starting at small weights first, then incrementing to heavier. A series of small weights that do not need to be removed during verification is optimal, as it simulates actual powder weighing operation. Initial verification points should have the weight(s) as close to the pan center as possible. To verify consistency of weighing across the pan, check 2 or 3 different weights at 4 equi-spaced locations around the perimeter of the pan (but not on the edge lip if there is one). For optimal verification of linearity, you should do checks at several weights below and around the typical weight range you will measure. Checking with increasing weight (multiple smaller weights) and decreasing weights will let you evaluate possible hysteresis (although with powder weighing this is unlikely to occur since weight is always increasing). For anyone interested, affordablescales.com has these listed at $649 this week (Jan 2021).

When I started reloading I bought cheap $20 Franklin Arsenal scale and noticed it would drift and you end up with different weight actually if you re-weight your first charges, that scared me so I went looking for better scale and found GemPro250, it was about $120-130 and it also has 0.02gr resolution. It's not as nearly as fast as FX120 but even spending this much on scale I thought it was a lot, but that's like 1/4 cost of FX120. Overall I am satisfied. I dream of owning the autotrickler setup but I know that even if I trickled every charge down to 0.02gr that doesn't mean I am going to get 1/4 or 1/2 MOA accuracy. Quality bullets and brass will get you much better results even within .1 grain accuracy powder charges.

@@6mm_chris20 I remember about reading too many negative reviews on 300. My 250 has it's quirks too but if you learned them things will be smoother. For example the leveling feet initially I was frustrated because they wouldn't lock in place so I screwed them in even though the scale wasn't leveled it didn't seemed to affect the accuracy. Recently after 3 years of usage I decided to level it and put some blue locktite, it surprised me how one side of feet and the front had to be extended visibly more, was my desk really that uneven? Was it floor? Was it bubble level crooked? I don't know. 2) when you remove the pan and you keep it off for a while the numbers will drift, so don't leave you pan out and if you do just re-zero. 3) One night we had power outage so I decided to use batteries and was frustrated how the accuracy was out the window. 4) Any breeze from window, AC or fan will effect the reading. 5) I wrapped ferrite ring over power supply cord - the cord that plugs in to scale and connected AC adapter to surge protector or battery backup, can't remember now, it improved stability. I leave it plugged in all the time so I don't need to wait 15 - 30 min to warm up. I replaced powder pan with one that has mini funnel build in from RCBS. I monitor the drift when I remove the scale the number is something like -67.28, as long as it doesn't drift more than .02gr it's fine and it practically never does else I recalibrate with 20g weight which I believe came included.

For a lab scale it’s at the entry level of scales, price wise. Scales like Sartorius or Mettler( which I have) are in the 4 to 5000$ range. I used to work at a labatory . They are so expensive since they in use and turned on 24/7 for 10 or 20 years, need to be calibrated and certified once a year and need to be very temperature stable .in terms of weighing you can ,today, weigh with scales like these or even G&G scales which are totally sufficient for reloading . My scale has a 0.0015 grain precision, which of course is ridiculous for reloading purposes. What’s important is to have a reference weight in the range you are measuring at. A 200 grams calibration weight doesn’t tell you anything about linearity of the scale. So for pistol a ref weight of half a gram or a gram is adequate , for rifle a 5 grams weight will do . I have made my own calibration weights, using a precision scale that was a factor 10 as precise as mine. Did this 25 years ago and it still is spot on ( 1.000 grams)

Used an air duster to clean open areas of the scale focusing on the area beneath the platen. Cleaned the connection between the scale and dispenser and applied some dielectric grease before assembling them back together. Took care of my drifting issue altogether Hope this helps you.

@DimaProk 5 жыл бұрын
@@fisher7897 you know what, I think I need to do that. I remember it was more consistent for me when it was new. It would underthrow let's say my target was 5 grains, it would do 4.96 constantly but now I am getting down to 4.92, which is almost a whole .1gr under. Resetting zero or re-calibrating would go back to 5 but than it would dip again. I wish I could adjust it to go just a tiny bit more.

Meanwhile, I'm over here with a vintage Lyman M5 and Dandy Omega getting the same speed, accuracy, and ability to multitask. I can see a kernel of #5 so those big logs are no problem at all and mine doesn't need to warm up, still works when the power goes out, doesn't drift ever, and doesn't care if I'm using fluorescents, candles, or moonlight. Not knocking the Autotrickler setup because it is nice and very well thought out, but it's just an expensive solution that, while an upgrade over others, still has all the warts of every other digital setup out there. There's a really good reason Prometheus didn't go digital.
@DimaProk
@DimaProk 5 жыл бұрын
@@mab0852 I don't need to warm up my scale because it's always on, when the power goes out I could use batteries and how often do you reload without power anyway? It's easier to see the numbers that lit up than that manual scale. I have made my own "dandy omega" trickler for few dollars years ago, it's made from a long bolt, a PVC "cup" a piece of antenna tube, a cell phone vibrating motor, a one AA battery with holder and temporary switch, works great actually. Your scale might not "drift" but the needle will move up and down if you dump 40 grain charge and will need settling down, this is not the case with FX-120, not sure what other "digital warts" you can think of but the first time I saw FX120 and trickler video I was blown away. The scale had zero problems that I've seen with cheap digital scales - it's super fast to settle and it doesn't drift, I think you would have to be a real tool to spend more than 5x on Prometheus. I see zero benefit or advantage.

I constantly double check my RCBS Lite with my scale that has same resolution of 0.02gr and I can tell you that for the most part the spread is very good at .04 - .06gr, what scares me sometimes is how it will throw often the first charge that would be as much as 1 grain off or once in a while (rarely) it will be off a good amount but the scale on RCBS will show that it's correct, this is why I double check on 2nd scale and as you can imagine it slows down the process

GAVIN WHEN USING PRECISION BALANCE YOU NEVER TOUCH THE WEIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The balance will now weigh the crap from your hands that got on the weights. A small set of curved tweezers are used to move the weights. Grasp the weights under the curved part at the top with the tweezers. Because you already touched them, they no longer weight correctly. Wash the weights with rubbing alcohol. Wipe off with lens tissue to dry. Verify the weight. Then DONT TOUCH THEM. Keep them in Clean box. If they get corroded they are trash. Make sure the weights are clean and dust free before use. The balance calibrates to several decimal places. The calibrations are what gives the balance its accuracy. Usually the pans are not touched either. Or if touched they are cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Precision equipment is only as good as its operator.

So is the juice worth the squeeze? Depends on who you ask. It is an expensive unit; but worth the price for its feature set that most won't be using. Is +/- 1/10 of a grain adequate for reloading purposes? Yes, in my case; but perhaps not in yours. A precision balance is going to give you a greater degree of consistency, not just greater resolution. There is something to be said for being able to load 10rds with 40gr of powder and not have 3@39.9, 2@40, and 5@40.1. I went with the A&D EJ 123, which is about $320. You get the 1mg resolution. It is a bit slower stabilizing (~5 sec), the repeatability and the linearity is not as fine. Worth the squeeze to me. Plus my RCBS bit the dust.

Over the years, accessories, which I now own them all, were an additional $500. So all said and done... I will have spent $5900 to drop powder to the granule, every time, in about eighteen seconds. The machine is absolutely incredible. If my house burned down tomorrow, the first thing I would do is call up Brand and get back on the 13 month wait list for another hand-built Prometheus 2.

I bought a scale with the same resolution and precision as this one. Cost me 70 bucks not 750 like this one. My buddy got the gem 20 of amazon that does have a precision of 0.007 grams and is much better than both of the other ones I mentioned and it only cost him26 dollars.

Thanks Gavin based on your video I went out and bought one of these scales because I wanted a scale that would measure a kernel of powder. I noticed that you used the heaviest kernel powder you could find. it turns out that you’re very deceiving and full of crap. I use reloader 15 a lot and I have to put four kernels in before it will even register. thanks to you I spent a lot of money and didn’t get the product I thought I was getting. I wish you would be more honest with all the products you review because you seem to love them all.

I love how you blame him for your scale not working up to your satisfaction. That’s real American of you, just blame everyone for your problems.
@brokosok
@brokosok 3 жыл бұрын
@@orBMW Just to be clear I called the company that makes these they they said nowhere do they say that this scale will measure one kernel of any powder in fact they said most powders would take 3 to 4 grains to move the scale The fact is the powder he measured probably has the heaviest grain out of most powders. I measured eight different powders that I used for handguns and center fire rifles and all of them required more than a couple of grains to move the scale. So you say it’s OK to advertise a scale to measure one kernel of powder when in fact the company that makes the scale claims it doesn’t have that capacity.
@Koelkop
@Koelkop Жыл бұрын
@@brokosok Yes the powder he used is on the heavier side at .04 grains per kernel. But you have to keep in mind this scale has a resolution or accuracy of .02 grains. It also has a auto zero function where if it drifts .02 grains up or down it will zero. This will make it seem like it is not picking up kernels that weigh .02 or less if you start at a 0.00 measurement and drop in one kernel at a time because the scale will zero the fluctuation. Drop a few grains in the pan to get a weight and then add one kernel at time, this scale is the way to go when you are serious about numbers and accuracy.

For a true lab grade scale you should never touch the calibration weight with your bare hands as the oil from your fingers can affect the weight of the calibration weight.

I been doing all my weighting on a good old beam scale. I love electronics but don't trust them enough to always be right. I would rather take mt time then to have a accident

Medical labs and pharmacies use a scale like this... they trusts lives and lawsuits to their accuracy. I think they're fine for some powder charges.

Advice... 1) unboxing is a waste of time. 2) state the cost up-front, because this is something

I would have been more impressed if you used multiple verified grain weights on this scale to see if it reads accurately vs random unverified pieces of a stick powder. Not for that $$

Not practical for 99% of folks. There are even more accurate tools but where do you draw the line? How to add powder in a semi normal fashion? You have to get the auto trickler and they ain’t cheap either. Interesting but only from a theoretical point of view.

Don- do you compete in 1000 yard rifle competitions?
@donmarshall4888
@donmarshall4888 5 жыл бұрын
gavintoobe No and neither do 99% of reloaders. THAT was my point. Too many other variables to impact accuracy at that range for a couple hundredths of a grain to make a difference. I load with digital scales (PACT) and measure everything to 1/10th of a grain and even that is overkill for anything I’d ever bother with. I’m not saying it’s not interesting, just not practical for most folks who look at your videos.

It ALL depends on what you are doing. If you are competing in rifle matches at 1000 yards, you need good gear, ESP if you want to load efficiently. :) For most casual shooters this is not needed.

And BTW: this isn't a crazy price at all. Similar scales (most of them) start at twice the price this one is at. You get what you pay for. :)

This scale shrunk my groups from 7" at 600 yards to 5". Vertical is less than an inch, used to be 3-4". I was using a Hornady autothrow. It was throwing +/- .8grns and thinking it was good.
