Hey everyone, glad some of you want to see "more" - some context on this video: First, I never try and teach something before I've done it at least once. This was my first Remington 700 build, and I didn't edit the videos or shoot the narrative until I validated that everything went together "right". Second- It takes MANY hours to do this type of gunsmithing job, and to film it. It's very hard to boil it down to several 15 minute videos like I have. You can't show everything. Third- I'll be covering these stories MANY times and MANY different ways- I will eventually break down each of the steps and processes so that you can get more detail on speeds/feeds/setups/techniques. Furthermore, I have an entire "Fundamentals of lathe operation" and "Fundamentals of mill operation" series of content coming up shortly. That's where I'll really cover all of the machining details, considerations, etc. If you have something specific you want to see, please let me know and I'll add that to my content ideas list. Also- I'm thinking "off the script" for the future- perhaps some day I'll do a job like this live on Twitch... Just thinking out loud. Warning, it will be "many hours long" you may need a lot of energy drinks and popcorn. Also, it could be like watching paint dry- not sure. :) Show less

I have been wanting a 224 Valkyrie bolt action since the first day they announced the 224 Valkyrie. Everyone thinks I’m crazy but I see it as a heck of a training rifle.

Yeah, I think it could be a "real winner" - versatile, not a lot of recoil- can't wait to finish the series.

When I rebarrel a rifle I make a mock barrel tennon and thread it to a perfect fit to the receiver then when you cut the barrel you have a reference to measure off of, then you mark the mock tennon to the specific rifle so if you have to rebarrel in the future you have the thread dimension ready to go, also you can put a fired round and cast of the chamber with it so you have every you need for measuring and reloading for that rifle

Gavin just some things to think about, when you cut the relief leave a bit if a lip against the shoulder to register the recoil lug, and for better measuring the threads get some thread wires for measuring the threads.

I love your work Gavin. I have had a question on my mind for a long time. It's slightly off topic, but what would i need/how would i be able to machine an AR-15, 10.5 inch, lightweight profile barrel from a 30mm OD .223 barrel blank with a lathe that has only a spindle bore of 20mm such as the Sieg SC4 ?

Jonathan- curious where you are located! I would suggest that you look at using a steady rest, take a look at the example half way down in this article: makingwithmetal.com/224-valkyrie-remington-700-build-p2-barrel-prep-and-alignment-in-the-lathe/

Someone Please!!!! Can someone answer me this, if you have a Remington 700 receiver will you be able to put any Remington 700 barrel on it, or can you tell me more about bolt action receivers in general, or are they versatile to more than one barrel??? My problem is I have a Remington .257 Roberts rifle, and it's so hard to get brass and ammo for I was wondering if I could get a bolt, and a barrel that will fit in the same action!!!!

You need to invest in a set of thread measuring wires you, can't check the pitch diam. with a caliper
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
I plan to show "over wires" (lathe fundamentals) - but with this work, as Gordy Gritters had demonstrated- it's the fit between the specific receiver threads and the tenon you are threading that matters. This is a tighter than normal fit- over the wires is not needed or the best option here.
@steveh8724
@steveh8724 4 жыл бұрын
Wires support standardization/interchangeability. Here you have a specific receiver and barrel tenon as a unique pair that you want to mate, so the caliper measurement approach gets the job done.

I like the DRO very well, sure makes it easy to control the tennon length. I use a left handed threading tool much like your right handed one, allows me to run the lathe in reverse, threading away from the shoulder (since you set up thru the headstock there is nothing to run into) at a high rpm, whatever you comfortable with hitting the threading dial mark. really makes a smooth thread. By the way you then can use the threading tool for the relief groove, just .75 divided by the TPI gives you a good depth, touch off, set to zero and start checking when within .005 or so. If you want to see this method in action check Joe P, on KZfaq.

I really would like to see more of what you are talking about instead of you standing in front of the lathe explaining what you did. Not all of us are machinists but are very interested in this information. Now I realize this isn’t an easy thing to do. But I just feel like you aren’t getting enough through to the viewers, or maybe just me, by just talking about it with only very few short clips of what’s actually going on.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9KGqJthlryckqc.html this is the wrong way to measure threads. For the major diameter this is fine, but for the pitch diameter you should use wire gauges to properly measure. They are super cheap, I think I bought some brown and sharps for like 30 bucks.

James- it may sound easy to tell the story of a 6 hour machining job- but it isn't. I put a lot of effort into these kinds of stories, and you don't get all of the context by just showing the lathe. Please read the pinned comment on this video- I have more detailed videos coming- it'll be different every time. If you don't like what I'm doing- don't watch.

@@Ultimatereloader VOICE OVER. You're not the only person on KZfaq doing this. You are not teaching. We're following along for pleasure. There are many channels on here to actually learn machining and gunsmithing. Just hard for me to watch a guy stand at a lathe talking about what I could be seeing.

James- I hear you- this time that wasn't the right format for the story (please read the pinned comment) - there will be LOTS MORE hands-on deep content (really, like for the next decade) - I'll be telling these stories in different ways, and with different techniques.
