If you want to reduce your stress level in threading , I would suggest a change. Turn your threading tool over on center, reverse your spindle direction and thread away from the shoulder. You can set a hard stop to start from and never worry about hitting the shoulder.I enjoy your videos keep up the good work!

@@Ultimatereloader I had a 1:7 twist 22/250 for several years and shot mostly 80gr amax and 80gr custom comp bullets in the 3150fps range. I sold it before the new way of heavy for caliber bullets came out. Now I'm considering an 7 twist 22/250 Ackley improved build, but I have a 6/250AI for shooting heavies now so I don't know if I'll pursue it.

Gavin, I think if you used a piece of heavy gauge aluminum wire wrapped around the barrel and cut so it doesn't touch itself you'll find it much easier to center the barrel than the aluminum pads you are using. The wire makes single point contact with the barrel and allows it to move much easier than the pads.

Nice video. 2 tips.....First order your self a stick of Creytex, its like a rubber eraser impregnated with carbide use it to polish your muzzle and any part you machine. Secound before you start polishing a part in your lathe useing sand paper, take the time to cover your lathe ways with tape and news paper so you will not get sand paper grit on your lathe ways this will keep the Mathews a percision machine for years to come. Why did you not face the action?

How do you know you have enough tension (torque) so that the barrel doesn't loosen up after firing? Is there any "lock tite" you use on the threads?
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
As long as you torque down the barrel well (I apply approx. 50-70 ft-lb toque) you aren't likely to have the barrel loosen on you. I don't use any thread lock because I know I may want to spin on different barrels, etc and don't see the need for it.

Why not install the action before chamber cutting? That way you dont need to account for shrinking of any dimensions, the reamer would just need to be long enough to pass through the action.
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
Some people will finish a chamber that way- with a reamer extension, cutting by hand. Hard to cut the whole chamber that way! :)

So can we get ridiculous for a second? Why have the action as a separate component anyway? Just make the barrel and action from one solid piece of bar stock...
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 5 жыл бұрын
Well, one reason is the ability to re-barrel! :) I know guys that are on their 4th barrel for a custom ($3000-5000) rifle, and the action just keeps on working. Sometimes you can "burn out" a barrel in 2000-ish rounds (depends on cartridge).

Don’t ever polish the crown your your machine work should be good enough to leave it alone. Second most cartridges zero to +.004 tolerance with positive .004 being your nogo. With the way that go gauge dropped with no tension that was was go but adding tape and then it wouldn’t close you were at or past your nogo. Buy a no go gauge they also make go +2 gauges
