That was a awesome video! I learned reloading from my Father in 1972 on his Lyman Spar-T turret press, which I inherited. I recently ordered the Lyman All American 8 turret, can't wait to get it. Nice to see how they are made, and made in America!

As a result of Gavin's You Tube channel and his very through, unbiased reviews I have recently purchased several pieces of Lyman reloading equipment. I had originally ordered a Redding Big Boss press kit. It took 5 months for Sinclair (Brownell's) to ship. I've looked at several reviews of the Brass Smith All American 8 turret press. Since the Redding was still in the box unused, Brownell's allowed me to return that press kit and I'm replacing it with the All American 8.

It seems that Lyman is really stepping up their game. 40 years ago I considered them a low tier manufacturer. But now they are running with the big league. I like the made in America with all American materials.

Tim Vatter that’s interesting. I’m 30 years old and I’ve always considered Lyman to be upper middle/top tier. I wouldn’t have guessed they were ever considered low tier.

@@RebelFlag61 to a lot of us new comers Lyman isn't on the high mark of companies, most of this has to do with reloading Snobs. I am glad I found this channel and saw this video, I have some Lyman stuff as I could afford it, but was not aware of the manufacture location, as I did not read anywhere on the box Made in the USA. I truly want to buy American made to support American companies. I will be purchasing some more things from them.

When i was shopping around for my gunsmithing screwdriver set i looked all over and just so happened to find that Lyman had a set. It's price made me think i was probably getting something with quality similar to wheelers. In other words good enough to get by during my apprenticeship. Well after 2yrs it's still going strong. I've even used some of the bits with my impact driver to remove screws so rusted into place i thought i would have to drill them out and never broke any of them. I have had to touch up the edge and tip on some of the thinnest straight blade and torq bits but once again i used them in cases beyond what they are designed to do. The driver handle is among my favorite too and I've tried probably over 2 dozen different brands bit drivers between my time in automotive and then gunsmithing. Theirs is shaped so it's very comfortable for long days at the bench, has a very grippy material so you aren't fumbling around with oily or wet hands (always hated using drivers like Brownells because of the slick plastic), plus you can quickly switch between a stubby driver or standard length by just pulling the extension shaft that can be used with the mini ratchet they include with the set. Long story short, you definitely don't want to sleep on Lyman, i just wish they would offer a nice expansion bit set so i could keep it all one cohesive set. The only complaint i have is with the Glock front sight bit. The walls are thin at the tip so it easily will flair out and strip the nut. The cure was a trip to the grinder however and just taking off about 0.030" i found the walls to be thick enough to be serviceable and it hasn't caused any problems since.

I have a lot of friends and family who are first time shooters, and the caps help them learn to load and handle the firearm without being nervous about live rounds. When it's live round time, they roll right through it, because of the practice with the caps!

Am I the only one who wants to know more about that Ruger No. 1 in the rack in the ballistics lab? For goodness sake - Lyman makes reloading dies. I prefer their 3-die set for pistol cartridges for a couple reasons. The M-Die expander is simply a “better mousetrap”, especially for lead bullets. The seater die comes with 2 stems for different bullet nose profiles and 1 or the other always seems to work well. The set includes a shell holder which saves a little money, and the price is good overall. WTF Gavin? I assume that you always use a scope or powered optic, but Lyman has been making excellent aperture sights, etc. forever.

I had a Lyman American 8, but ended up selling it because it kept getting primers stuck in between the ram and the spent primer chute hole in the front of the press frame before dumping into the cup. I really wanted to like this press, but that happened too often and when it did, it completely locked up the press and I couldn't even move the handle until I was able to forcefully unjam it and pry the stuck spent primer out. Maybe if Lyman would have made the hole in the front of the press bigger than the hole in the ram then the spent primers wouldn't get hung up...regardless, Lyman REALLY needs to re-engineer this aspect of their new presses. Otherwise, it was a solid press so maybe once they fix this I'll buy another one someday...
@mastercfromhalo3

Neil Whelden interesting... I’ve reloaded thousands of rounds on my all American 8 and never experienced this issue..... have you tried contacting customer service about that? Maybe there was a burr in there. Things slip thru from time to time, they probably would have repaired it or replaced it all together.
@nells1776
@nells1776 4 жыл бұрын
@@mastercfromhalo3 No, I looked very closely at the entire assembly to see if there was a burr, or if there was some way I could modify it with a dremel or small file, etc. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything that could have been cleaned up. I think it was just the angle of the opening which was causing primers would just get stuck. Then when they were half way out of the hole, they would occasionally jam on the bottom of the press. Unfortunately, I'm not the only one to have had this problem - look at some of the negative reviews on KZfaq or elsewhere online: www.midwayusa.com/product/101962214?pid=757540 Like I said, I really want to like this press, but Lyman needs to redesign this.
