Bought this press to replace my old RCBS single stage press which still works great, but man I got to tell you this Lyman 8 station turret press works awesome. I've been reloading 300 win mag, 30-06 , 223, and 9mm with it and has preformed flawlessly. Full length resizing is effortless, and the primer feed has worked great even though I prefer to use a hand primer with my rifle reloads. I would definitely recommend this press for anyone looking to upgrade. Having all 8 stations is a nice addition and will last forever.

One thing about putting a powder measure on a turret like that is, the powder measure is constantly being moved, thereby slightly compacting the powder in the powder measure, which causes your powder charges to get heavier as you load. So constant attention has to be paid to charge weight. This isn't so critical with ball powders, but flake type powders it is an issue. Employing a baffle in the powder measure alleviates this a little.

This press can be operated as a single stage press eliminating what you see as a problem. In fact, it is most likely you will be less inclined to make a mistake using it as a single stage. I have one of these and only use it as a single stage for either full length sizing, bullet pulling or de-capping primers. It is a space saver in my reloading. I primarily use a Dillon press I have set up with neck sizing dies for my rifles primarily. There is a versatility of different ways to use all presses. Don't get the mind set you need to do it the way someone else is doing it in a demo.

Lyman needs to add more holes to the turret head for more options on handle position. I think I see a ball detent on the handle, which is an improvement over the Redding design, so long as they broached the hole in the turret to accept the ball.

As a total novice with no mentor, there are two things I would mention. It was hard to get the shell holder in place the first time. I spent half an hour online trying to find out if I got the wrong brand of shell holder. Finally a forum mentioned that you just have to push hard to get it in. Second thing (still unresolved as of commenting) is that I cannot understand the priming mechanism. The priming lever is in place but I can't see how the 3 part assembly on the end of it (primer punch?) can hold a primer in place. it doesn't seem to be magnetic? And I can't get a primer to drop out of the feed tube (I know I have to pull on priming lever to depress the blocking pin). Everything makes sense except the punch set up.

Great vids Gavin, I personally use a T-7 for loading my magnum pistol cases because I hand weigh all my charges because I usually go almost to the max with them. For my range ammo .223 9mm and 45acp I use a hornady lock n load ap but it’s much more stressful than the turret there are so many things going on at once that you have to keep an eye on. Loading on the turret is relaxing almost like therapy of course I look at the shooting range as my “ safe space” 😃 anyway keep up the great vids

Brandon: I can tell you from VERY recent first hand experience that this All American-8, if you can find the whole kit, is a great deal for an beginner reloader. I have some experience, but this is my first personal setup. It did come with some damaged parts, but Lyman replaced them all in a timely fashion no questions asked! I'm starting with .44 Magnum reloading, and it's been a breeze to set up and work with. Very consistent. Some of the downsides to me were: Case Trimmer Pilot set screw doesn't actually hold the pilot in. I need to trim a case, then use my inertia bullet puller to remove the damn pilot. Primer Feeder can be a little finnicky. Sometimes a primer turns sideways or does not want to feed immediately. Nothing that's ever significantly slowed me down though. The Powder Measure takes some playing around with to get exact. That alone took me about an hour to dial in. This should be a very important step however, considering too little or too much powder can leave you with a squib at best, or dead at worst. I was not happy until my pocket scale read a steady 27 grains. No flickering between 26.9-27-27.1. The manual suggests lubing ALL moving parts with powdered graphite. That shit makes a HUGE mess! That's all I can think of at this point, but as I come up with things I'll be happy to update you!

Good morning Gavin and everyone else with notifications on this video. I have a couple of questions, I will appreciate an answer from anyone. 1: Have you experienced any problem with flexing of the turret head and has it gotten worse over time? I understand it's not a single stage and I wouldn't mind a thousandth or two of runout, because I can fix that with a concentricity tool. But any more than that, it will be a pain in the ass. 2: have any of you modified the main handle/ operating arm or fabricated a new one; with the offset needed to eliminate the interference with the indexing handle? Thanks for your time and response. 🤙

The Lee breech locks are either $5 or $10 each depending on which one you buy . The Lyman turret only is $58. I really don't see the need when the turrets are that inexpensive, you're at most saving $18 but most people have gone to the lock collar style which negates any savings.

This video contributed to my decision to buy this press. Mine was missing the small primer cup, and Lyman sent it no muss no fuss. Mine came with the linkage fully connected. I ended up disassembling it in order to lube the press. It ran much better after that. I’m not a fan of the priming system. My RCBS handheld priming system is better for me.
@58harwood
@58harwood 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe I got a lemon but, mine is way out of alignment. You can really see it when using the RCBS Competition die set and the extended shell holders. And I’m not talking about just a couple of thousands either, it’s more 50-100 out. And the ram itself has high and low spots that you can feel and even see once it been lubricated. And then there is only 2 turret handle holes, versus 3 for the Redding. Not a huge deal but 3 holes are just more convenient, user friendly. Knowing what I know now, I would NOT buy it again. My Redding T7 has much tighter tolerances, along with a nicer fit and finish. In this case, it seems you get what you pay for.
@n2omike

Redding vs Lyman is like Anschutz vs Ruger... Huge difference in precision and quality. Both get the job done, but there is a reason the Redding is more expensive. The priming system on the Lyman was absolute garbage on my unit. I also have an old Redding scale/balance... and there is absolutely no comparison between that and a more modern day Lyman. Redding vs. Lyman is Snap-on vs China.

I wouldn’t of used it like that too much work. I would put four different rifle calibers in there. I would size and prime all the brass in one step one die. Then turned to the seating die and charged and loaded in one step with a auto charging scale. For me in the eight holes it would be two dies each of 325 WSM then 30-06 270 338. Then I’d get another head for 22-250 223 300blk 308. Using the same method above I’d get another head for 9mm 40 45 and 38. If I were trying to use your method I’d utilize a self indexing press.

Got one of the first ones. What a battle, took it out of the box, fell apart, no pins!! Got it together and missing an Eclip! Primer tubes full of burrs, had to hone the inside, bent a finger, tube shot! Primer system wouldnt feed primer, took it apart polished feed system, had to fiddle with tention spring. You have to check EVERY orimer, small primers will feed upside down. Wont use for precision loading, too much flex in plate. Lastly, customer service sucks, took 4 phine calls, horrible hours if youre on west coast, left messages, no returns. Had to argue to get the primer tube replaced, and got a primer feeder to see if the gap to prevent flipped primers was incorrect...nope, they still flip! NOT IMPRESSED, mostly from customer service. No rookie, 50 years reloading

The press itself is fine for 99% of the population. However, the primer system is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!! For top tier bench rest, a solid single stage or T7 would be better. Redding vs. Lyman is Anschutz vs. Ruger or Snap-on vs. Made in China. No comparison when it comes to quality, but the press itself (outside of the priming system) isn't a bad piece for the vast majority of reloaders out there.

I'm sorry, but there is simply no substitute for a good single press for good, quality ammo. I have a RCBS rock chucker press and I'm very lucky to have an old Lyman All American 4 station press with the adjustable rear support rod that takes care of runout by eliminating any flex in the turret. With minimal work to the rifle bass, I consistently achieve .002 runout or less. Today turret presses can't give you that kind of quality ammo, there's just to much play in the turret head during sizing and bullet seating. I bought a Redding T-7 press 3 years ago to upgrade from my 1964 Lyman. What a mistake I made. I could only achieve .005 - .010 runout with match grade brass. Why? There's no adjustable rear support of any kind to eliminate turret flex during the loading operation. Now this is just my opinion, but if you go out to hunt for deer or woodchucks, don't you want to know that you missed a 200 yd shot at a deer, it's your fault not the gun or ammo? Everyone should learn the benchrest a rifle to shoot at no less than 100 yds. you look for the smallest consistent group and move the group to zero the rifle. Don't think by hitting a 10 inch pie pan at a 100 yds you can hit a deer at 200 yds. Under the best conditions maybe, but how many shots in the field are under ideal condition? Just my opinion, but I know when I miss a shot, it's me, not the gun.

That is what Lee did with their turret press. Totally different and in my opinion better, I can load the same quality ammo on it as on my classic cast single stage. For me and my application a conventional turret press is useless. But other people might have other needs than I.

I just bought this press and wanted to install my RCBS Uniflow press in one of the holes like yours. What additional equipment is needed to create a press lever activated powder through station on my new Lyman 8? Also, are you aware of any videos on how to install the equipment and the powder measure? Thanks!

I bought one but a lot of play on the turrets, definitely not good for precision loading - Should there be any play on the turret base and the press base? Seems like there is about 0.8mm play. on your video there is no play

Besides possibly rigidity I don't see the advantage of this over my Lee turret press. I can swap out turret heads in seconds and it auto-indexes. It even physically takes up less space. They should've went ahead and drilled out the extra 2 quadrants for the indexing rod.

It's made more for entry level reloaders that want a press that will grow with them until they feel experienced enough to go the Auto-indexing route. My entire kit, which came with powder measure, stand, press, case trimmer, pocket scale, powder dribbler, Lyman 50th Edition reloading book, and a few other goodies only cost about $400. Basically, it's for the guys that are just starting to get into it, but know they'll quickly outgrow a single stage like the Rock Crusher!

My LCT has some play in the turret head while in the press. So bullet seating varies which is important to some people for precision reloads. Not to mention the safety prime system on my LCT is a POS! Having a more reliable on-press priming system would be another advantage to this press over the LCT.

I realize they are a sponsor, so digging in and noting the short falls is hard to do! That said, you are a machinist, and like anyone the deals with tight tolerances I can't believe you like this press! Anyone wanting to load anything with precision cannot do it with this press! Put an indicator on the top of a die and put pressure on the handle, on a 6.5 Creed die, the reflection at the top of the die can exceed .007.. If you don't ruin your brass at sizing, you will if you try a compressed load, you will spend hours trueing loaded ammo. I got one of the first ones, and if the horrible quality control didn't scare you away, their customer service will!! Great press if you're loading handgun stuff, but if you're loading anything for precision... Forget it! I did get it to work though, I removed about .008 from the center bushing, allowing the center bolt to compress the die plate, this works fine, however, you cannot index the die plate without backing out the center bolt. A pain in the ass? YES, but better than getting 4 cents a pound for scrap metal!!

Different animal! Turrets are like single stage presses with quick change dies, less complex and more precise (usually) compared to a progressive.
