Ferrari 250 LM! This V12 Ferrari is rarer than a 250 GTO and sounds glorious, Henry shares his experience of driving an extremely rare Ferrari 250 LM up the hill at Goodwood.

Sometime in the early/mid 1980s, I attended my first rally; Nicolet in Wales I think. There was an accident on the stage, and we walked along the road, passing the line of cars all waiting to run. I was invited to sit in a Metro 6R4 (incredible experience as a kid). I'm sure I was told it was Derek Bell. I can't find a reference to him running a 6R4, even though I know he did compete at rally events.

he seems nice, ive never personally met him however. he's not very quick in historic racing because he came dead last in the TT in a relatively competitive car being the porsche 906 Carrera

@@georgeure1942 I think that could be down to the fact that at these events the drivers don't actually own the cars so are always respectful to the owners. Also, he has nothing to prove so it's more of a social occasion and chance to catch up with old friends

My uncle met him some years ago, before my uncle passed away from cancer. Bell was a friend-of-a-friend who my Uncle knew, an employee of Bentley. During his illness, my uncle's last brig trip was over to Europe and the US to see all the big motorsport events, and it just happened to be the year that Bently won Le Mans. It was during this time that they met, and they quickly became fast friends. My uncle died a few months later. Word got back to Mr Bell who wrote a letter that was sent all the way back to Australia to be read out at the service. Derek Bell is genuinely one of the nicest people in motorsport, and I hope to meet him myself one day.

Wonderful video (not just because I was in it !) of what must have been very special. I had a similar experience driving a 1954 Alfa Romeo 1900SS from the Alfa museum up the hill at the 2018 FoS. Terrifying and Amazing at the same time 😬

The sound of the V12 is simply mega. It's got both the shrieking high's of a typical 12-cylinder Ferrari engine, but what I noticed the most was the bass in the lows and mid-range revs... simply marvelous.

Wouah ! What a piece of luck to have been allowed (and able) to drive a rolling legend such as the 250 LM ! A car that has won Le Mans and no doubt quite a few other major races. An immersion into the soul of a racing Ferrari with the Colombo V12 in all its glory. I am happy for you and I think what Derek Bell told you for the photo session crowned the whole experience beautifully. Three cheers 👏

Great story! I was there as a spectator and really enjoyed the Ferrari celebration. I remember standing at the Goodwood house just centimeters away of a 250 GTO and seeing all kinds of famous drivers (& other people) just hanging around, gave me goosebumps even as a spectator, can't even imagine how it must have felt being an actual part of the celebration and driving a legendary car like that.

Over the years, I've seen you - and read about you - driving a lot of cars, which have all instilled varying minor degrees of envy but nothing, *nothing* comes close to seeing this. The 250LM was the first Ferrari I truly fell in love with and this video is such a wonderful representation of why, and all backed up with a humble tale of the experience. Top marks.

The 250LM has the most beautful sound of any car ever made. It makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up in the same way a Spitfire or Mustang Merlin does. It manages to have a mechanical soul.

Thank you, Henry Catchpole. Engaging and understated as usual. I appreciate the subtle double clutching--Steve McQueen made big noises going up and down the gears with it in Bullitt. I recall the first 250LM at the Paris auto show. I thought it the most beautiful of this genre. Its roof ended abruptly in a short cowl (almost like a 250P) that contrasted with the rounded rear haunches and upswept tail. Roof cowls were subsequently extended for a slightly hunched look--not as graceful, but perhaps a dynamic improvement. Motor memories.

Derek Bell sounds like an all around gent. I went to Le Mans a few years ago with my dad and we did the grid walk and I waved at his son and he stopped his piece to camera to shake my hand. I felt like a tool for interrupting but obviously the Bells just have that character.
