Fun fact, this game was first released as a built-in title for the Analogue Mega SG. If you had the mega SG's front end activated on startup, it would give you the option to either run the cartridge you in service into the console, or boot directly into ultracore

Great review as always! I waited YEARS to play this gam, since I saw an old video from 2010, you can find some of my comments there lol and thank god it was released. Ultracore became one of my favourite MD games EVER and that means a lot. The music, the visuals, gameplay, everything is great, specially love how the enemies explode with lots of fire and metal pieces around. The sound driver was the same Jesper Kyd used for his works on the MD and the composer was Olof Gustaffson who worked on a lot of Amiga games so yeah, it has that Euro/Amiga style all over it (Those arpeggios *chef kiss*). You can also get the japanese version from Columbus Circle, I got mine from there.

Great video =D Didn't know about this game! The chips - the large one is a flash ROM. The smaller ones at the bottom are level shifters / translators to account for the ROM being a 3.3v device, connecting to the 5v level buses of the Megadrive. I suspect the chip top right is some sort of NVRAM. Small 3 pin device on the left, 3.3v regulator probably.

I tried getting into this game but man the level design is cheap. Those platforming sections you mentioned are way too tough, especially with how the platforms bounce. It would be easier if they changed color or made some kinda sound to let you know they're at their peak bounce, but they don't so it's more of a guessing game. Unfortunately, Euro devs at this time really did like to crank up the difficulty to an absurd level, Shadow of the Beast also comes to mind. Also I wish they used more colors than brown, blue, gray, and green, though the animations do look nice and smooth. But man that music is incredible, you can tell it was from a Euro dev because of how many arpeggios it uses. I do like what Ultracore has to offer, but personally I'd rather play Mega Turrican instead.
@st1ka
@st1ka 3 жыл бұрын
Oh I completely understand why the game wouldn't be for everyone. The first time I reached that platform segment I was about ready to give up, but eventually I got a feel for it.
@overdrone1606

Haha, oh that first bouncing platform section in level 2 gave me headaches as well 😅 Suffice to say it probably wasn't a good idea to put an instadeath floor underneath whilst the player was supposed to be getting a feel for how it's done, but that's what they did.

5:42 Take this with a grain of salt, most of my experience with electronics comes from KZfaqr BigCliveDotCom and a 60-in-1 Electronic Project Lab kit I had when I was a kid. This is a DragonDrive printed circuit board (PCB) used to run newer Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games. Older boards had a long, thin MPR-family chip to store game data, while this uses a fatter EN29LV320CB-70TIP chip. And while it's the biggest chip on this PCB, it's still smaller in area than the older style chips. The DragonDrive PCB can support battery-backed saves (think RPG save slots, not emulation save states) but this particular PCB isn't set up for that. If it was, there would be a battery on that copper circle and those empty white squares in the center would have chips or other components on them (big one for save data, the rest for power regulation).

Seems like a lot of fun, even it's unfortunately kinda dated in some aspects. I wish there were more titles like this and Turrican, there aren't many indie games trying the same thing

How can Liljegren be hard to pronounce, I mean, it's not French or Chinese and spoken just like it's written?? Also, it means "lily branch" in Swedish. Also 2, great review!

Odd thing to say given the circumstances and the game does look solid enough overall but perhaps would have benefited from a little more time in the oven. Seems like a few minor tweaks here and there would have made it a real contender

0:40 "publisher Psygnosis pullet out at the last minute, de-emphasizing the Genesis as the runner-up in the *8-bit console* war" Did I expect anything less from Polyshit? Of course I didn't. Stop feeding that cancerous website by giving it free publicity.

I tried this for 10/20 minutes but couldn’t enjoy it. Maybe it’s that European game aesthetic which personally I don’t like or the gameplay isn’t the run n gun I’m used to. Also that physical edition looks a bit crap imo, from the cover with minimal effort put in, the barebones manual and the regular screws on the cart, not to mention the PCB. For the price they’re asking it should have been better.
@st1ka
@st1ka 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I understand what you mean, but I do admit to having a soft spot for that Euro aesthetic
