Thanks Dan...good offering as usual. In regards to shoes...I've tried Altra Lone Peak shoes off-trail and found them very sloppy. The Hoka One One Torrent have a slight drop but fit my wide feet pretty well and they are more stable for off-trail than the Lone Peak's. I also picked up a pair of the Altra Timp and am excited to try them out this coming season. They're slightly sturdier than the Lone Peak I think and may out-perform them on rough terrain including some off-trail or rock scrambling. I live in NH White Mountains and scrambling here is mandatory. Look forward to your next offering. As a dude with a 5 year-old at home I LIVE for other people's adventures and the vicarious pleasure it brings. Happiest of trails!

Thanks for these insights. Interesting to see the specialized gear that we don't see a lot of over here in Europe. As for shoes: you might want to take a look at the Cloudventures from On Running. These are trail running shoes but they are quite rigid and have a wide front. Beware that the sole material is a little more slippery on wet surfaces than a vibram sole and the wide spaces between the huge lugs become pebble magnets.

@@DanStenziano Hey, it's not that bad! 1) there are not bears around every bush, that's a myth we make up to keep outsiders from discovering Alaska's secret gems. 2) igloos and sled dogs are not necessary for summer travel, so some weight savings there if you come in the right season. 3) most polar bears are ticklish, if you know where to tickle them :) Seriously though, I'm right outside Anchorage and there are amazing trails every direction you look, with views that will knock your socks off. We lack the longer thru trails of the states though, so I'm hoping to try some longer off trail hikes this summer. hoka speedgoat 5's are great for the Sierra Nevada and platypus feet. stretchy knit upper for fat feet and they drain water/dry fast, plenty of cushion for long days and the same vibram mega grip outsoles that is used in the top approach shoes. great for granite and talus. I wear the exact same shoes! I like the King MT’s, but I don’t love them for the same reason you don’t. I never feel super confident in class 2 stuff. On the other hand... I absolutely LOVE the Bushidos. I’m on my 3rd pair, and it’s been my favorite trail runner by far. I also have a little bit of platypus feet, but most def not as much as yours probably are. That would be a great video topic, though I worry it would feel cheesy if I made that one from a couch lol. Hopefully when the weather gets a bit nicer I can make a nav video while out on a hike. But for the time being, the videos and articles that Skurka has made on navigation were really helpful for me. Most important is to practice terrain association every time you go hiking; I'd even plan a trip just to practice it. That's the biggest skill that will help you in the Sierra. It's nice to know the basic compass stuff, but map reading is the big one for high routes.

Great video! Very similar to my standard Sierra set up. Your thoughts on the Altra fit for off trail are exactly the same as mine. I tried the Lone Peaks on a few scrambles and found that the nice wide toe box and soft cushion that was nice on trail did not have enough stability for off trail. Check out Topo Athletic shoes. Widder toe box than most shoes, maybe not quite as big as an Altra. I'm a big fan right now of the MTN Racer model. I'm planning on having a review video up on my channel in a few weeks.

@@DanStenziano I have the Terraventure's too. This is probably me splitting hairs and getting overly geeky but I find the Terraventure's a little bit roomier and with a little bit softer foam. The MTN racers have a bit tighter in the heal/mid foot area and have a bit stiffer foam. So typically I like the Terraventure's for trail running and the stiffer MTN Racers for off trail scrambles. I'm probably over analyzing them but that is what I have found.

Great gear loadout. Loved your last video on the Super Sierra. Been eyeing that Splitwing tarp on your trip. Love the weight and its 3 walls but not overly keen on the gap in the beak. Do you think if a random storm came by, you could lower the tarp and reduce that gap in the beak by crossing it over itself? Dont plan to use a bivy so i will definitely get wet if rain entered via the beak. Thanks
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, yeah if you pitch it low it doesn’t really make it any easier to pull the wings together. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNtghr2Czri5dYE.html If you watch this video around 1:00 you can see what I mean. The wings were meant to provide a little bit of side protection and also to cover the gap between the tarp and optional vestibule. In that sense, I view it more as a regular a-frame tarp with a closed foot end. Basically you still need to be careful about pitching with the foot end into the wind and ideally some natural protection for the open end. If you’re expecting frequent storms or exposed camps you might want the vestibule or even the Yama Cirriform instead. Hope this helps.

Hey Dan! I greatly enjoyed your Super Sierra adventure with your buds. Wow, what a challenge. I'm so glad you guys made it through. Was wondering about your 10k Anker battery. I'm puzzled how you can have enough power for your camera, InReach, phone (unless you kept the latter two off most of the time) and I assume your headlamp and/or flashlight over several days in between resupply. Did you not run out of juice? When you did that night-hiking, if you only had the Tip, did you fasten it to your hat or something? Why did you prefer the Tip to a headlamp? Again, thrilling video, beautifully narrated and photographed!
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You're right that I tried to limit use of the InReach and phone. InReach was only used at night to send messages and was off during the day, and the phone was only used for double checking navigation and was otherwise in airplane mode and power saving mode. I was able to get away with a 10k because the battery in the Sony a6600 is huge and I could usually get 2+ days of shooting out of it before needing to plug it into the bank. As for the flashlight, I just didn't use it much aside from that one night hike we did. I like a handheld light with a clip because I can use it as a flashlight or clip it to my hat for a headlamp. I also like to hold my light at waist level because it casts longer shadows on rocks so I'm less likely to trip.

Thanks for another great video, Dan! The SplitWing has up to 12 stake/guyout options. Have you ever been tempted to carry more than six stakes? How does it handle high winds with just six? Also, the tarp is usually staked down without lines at the corners. How would you use rocks to hold the stakes down in high wind without causing potential damage to the tarp? Thanks.
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 2 жыл бұрын
Good questions. I have only ever carried 6 stakes. The side panel tie outs make a loop with the lineloc so I just put a good size rock in the loop to guy out the sides. Structurally the SplitWing is very solid in wind, however the side panels flap pretty bad. As for putting rocks on the corners.. the loops for the stakes are long enough that you can place a rock without it touching the tarp fabric. Probably won’t stress the fabric too bad.

Hi Dan. I've really enjoyed watching your videos over the past year or so. Quick question regarding how you pack your backpack. @DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris! I fold my sleeping pad and use it as a back panel, usually inside my pack liner. Then I'll put anything I don't anticipate needing at the very bottom (for ex tarp and rain jacket in Arizona). Next comes the quilt. If yours is newer it may be loftier than mine, contributing to your packing difficulty. Bear can squishes down the quilt, and then extra clothing, tarp, groundsheet, etc are packed around the bear can, including behind it for padding. electronics, ditty bag, and usually puffy on top. The pack will be close to maxed out but not quite.

@@chrisstewart5451 yeah the bottom of the bear can will be touching the sleeping bag. I don’t think it’s a safety concern because generally there are no food contaminants on the outside of the can and it’s thick plastic. I probably smell more like food at night than my quilt does. it should be noted that your route is somewhat unique in the Sierra. Most people hiking in the Sierra will cross perpendicular to your route down though the various "benches" to the main corridor. Where you are hiking typically has a constant breeze and less humidity even by the lakes. Thus more bug free. All be assured...if you come to the Sierra be as prepared for mosquitoes as much as you are prepared for water. Less so in Sept but good lord if you guess wrong you are whats for dinner. Most trails will fit this description...but the high route not only has the best views it is in fact bug free....silver linings

My Prophet is size M. The belt cinches tight enough now (probably 30-31 waist atm), but by the 2nd half of the CDT in 2019 I was skinnier (maybe 28-29 inch waist) and it was a little loose

Was curious about your mini tripod. I’m looking for a small light weight one now. Are you happy with the one you have and what is the brand? Thanx!

amzn.to/3v1mhkI Don't know the exact brand, but this is more or less what I have. It's pretty good, nothing special. Essentially it's the smallest/lightest possible tripod at less than 2oz, so it is less stable than, say, a GorillaPod or similar designs in the 5-6oz range. Gotta be careful not to place it in direct wind.

How's the PU coating holding up on the inside of your pack? I've been looking to buy one, but I'm cautious about getting the Dyneema X version because I've had PU coatings deteriorate and flake off on me before.
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I just did a little test and it still beads water like new except for the back panel which seems to absorb some water. Seems like it has deteriorated rather than outright flaked off. I'd expect this to happen to any PU coating that is exposed to repeated rubbing. I had a pair of rain mitts that were PU coated on the inside and after a while the coating had visibly flaked off. This is not as bad, so maybe it's on the more durable end of PU coatings?

Cutaway looks super cool, at first I thought it was too small but it looks like the longer torso sizes would be close to a burn or ks40. I have a list of packs I'm tempted to try out- Atom Packs has always appealed to me, LiteAF more recently, and idk if you follow Saunter Packs on IG but he's someone I met on trail who's making really nice looking packs.

Oh man, funny you should say that, I just tried on the tx4 and liked them a lot, except for the leather upper. Enter tx3. Too bad I’d need to order them to try, nowhere has them near me. Another good one I tried recently is the ultra raptor ii in wide fit. Wider than I expected, but the toe box is not as nice a shape as the tx shoes.

@@DanStenziano Ultra Raptor in reg is too tight for me too, tried a wide at an REI and it felt sloppy. The new Salomon X Ultra 4s are too narrow too, similar to the XUltra 3s. Although somehow the heal cup of the XU4s seems stiffer/tighter. TX3s were a rec from another friend who has similar issues as me and they were an instant take. Picked up 3 sets for $65 each from SteapnCheap :)

Shoes: Stack-height invites twisted ankles and running-shoe pyramid platform only worsens the effect. Minimalist shoes lighten the load with less stack-height and less pyramid, but generally offer less traction and weak rock-plates? If New Balance Minimalist-wide put Altra traction-nubs with Altra rock-plate (and gaiter-velcro), we'd have something?
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Agree on stack height. I've been a long time fan of minimal shoes actually. The two shoes I tried, especially the King Mtn, have pretty low stack heights (ofc nothing like my Vapor Gloves). High routes are a weird activity to find good shoes for since you need several qualities that are often not found on the same shoe.

Its funny you say how durable your carbon poles are because I've heard a few other youtubers swear off carbon poles due to them not being durable enough.
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Well, not all carbon poles are created equal. The BD ones have a thicker shaft than some other popular options like the Gossamer Gear LT4s, for example. Don’t get me wrong, it’s certainly possible to break these if you were to jam one between rocks and fall with all your weight on them. I’m guessing what these other ‘tubers mean is that when carbon fiber fails, it snaps or shatters, whereas when aluminum fails it just bends, and you can keep hiking with a bent pole. Even so, I’d rather use these than BD’s aluminum version because these vibrate/wobble less when they strike the ground, and just feel more sturdy in general.

Great video! I really enjoyed watching your trail documentary, so this is a cool follow-up. I must say, it pains me a bit to see you using trekking poles without straps. I blame Andrew Skurka for telling people to remove their trekking pole straps.... He's super knowledgeable and experienced, but I'm certain that he has the wrong idea on this issue. You might be interested in checking out this video about poling technique in cross country skiing. Many of the same concepts and techniques are applicable to hiking poles kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbxlh9egls-sfXU.html To be fair, for many of the steep uphill sections on a high route, I'm sure you're choking up to the foam grips, so in that situation straps aren't any help. Anyways, great job again the video. I especially like your tarp, that thing is neat.
@DanStenziano
@DanStenziano 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah haha you're definitely not the only one to point this out to me; a good number of people mentioned it on a previous video. It doesn't matter much to me, I think if people prefer straps then they should definitely use them. I've only XC skied once, but I do understand the straps' utility/necessity in that context. I also acknowledge that straps improve efficiency for hiking. I removed the straps years ago when I was more obsessed with weight savings. I will say that I use the poles very lightly and I like to be able to quickly stow them under an arm to eat or drink, so I don't feel like I'm missing out. But- maybe on a future pair I'll leave them on and see if I change my mind.
@finnbordal
@finnbordal 3 жыл бұрын
@@DanStenziano Nice, well it sounds like you've thought it through and you're doing what works best for you. I like the idea of being able to stow your poles quickly, and I suppose the increase in hiking efficiency isn't all that important if you prefer not to use the poles too much anyways.
