Ultrasonic Rail Testing test rail for defects including: transverse and compound fissures,
split web, piped rail, bolt hole cracks, head and web separations, vertical and horizontal split heads.
Ultrasonic rail testing was first offered by Sperry in 1949 with the equipment mounted on
a motor car to assist the then in use induction method of testing, at that time a hand inspection was made at each joint. In 1960 ultrasonic equipment was added to detect defects in the rail head. The first all ultrasonic detector car was tried for the first time in October 1959 on the New York City subway system.
Ultrasonic testing uses the transmission of high frequency sound waves into the rail head and web. These ultrasonic waves are at 20,000 cycles per second. The waves are sent into the rail,
then bounced back, the measure of time it takes to bounce back, also called reflected, indicates whether there may be a flaw.
Acoustic impedance is the resistance of a material to the passage of sound waves. The acoustic impedance determines how much sound is transmitted and reflected when the wave encounters a boundary with another material (flaw). It measures size of a fissure by that method. The larger the difference in acoustic impedance between 2 materials, the larger the amount of reflected energy is.

Hey...one of your older videos... Need narratives on this activity... You obviously have done so...with the newer ones... Your talking points really make it interesting....

Yes sir, we've been rail testing for over 20 years, they've found a good many defects over the years, hard to say how many derailments they have saved from us fixing what they found before something bad happened. Appreciate your watching

Thank you Jeff, one of my early ones, I didn't know back then I could turn my phone and make full screen, nor did I know I could narrate or it would have been a much better one. If you would please go back to that video. Tonight I put up in the description box what all they are looking for and some of how the ultrasonic system works, you might like to read that. PS: I'm Dave

@@ccrx6700 Fantastic, I sure will check it out again. Thanks.; Update : That is great information. It looks like there's a lot of computer and other electronics in those cabinets. Did you have them inspect the entire line or just a section?

You can use a tuning fork to test for bone fractures on a person, I imagine this is very similar to test for fractures or bad parts of rail. Fascinating.

One of my way early videos and not a very good job making it. They send an ultrasonic wave down into the rail, then measure the time it takes to bounce back, if there is a deviation in that time, then that would denote the wave hit a defect in the rail. If that happens then the guy will get out of the truck and using a hand held device, x ray the rail. I'm not sure if it's a true x ray like in hospitals but is similar I believe. Thank you for watching

Really? And this the "other guy" as you say...lol That was one of my very first vids I made, not real pleased with it, but I had zero clue what I was doing back then, and am still learning now. those guys we had in there were the most particular testers we've ever had here in all the years I been going with them.

@@ccrx6700 seems like there were going backwards more then forwards. Lol I have days like that too. And yes it’s a nice looking truck. I’ve got a ragged out old loaner right now because mine is in the truck shop. Seems like everyday there’s something else to fix.

I watched a few of your broken rail (inclusion) and defect videos yesterday and I was wondering if the line was ever ultrasonic tested. I guess now I know. Is the line required to be scanned periodically, or was this a requested service?

On RR's governed by FRA it is required, we are not but we try to have it done twice a year, it's hard to get a company to come in sometimes with only 17 miles of track, they all want the big jobs as I'm sure you undertand that Samuel.

In 1923 Dr. Elmer Sperry started design on inventing a workable way to detect internal defects in a rail. Thru the years with experimentation the methods now used were developed, it wasnt until 1960 the ultrasonic method of detection was added to detector cars
