Since this video was made, Ultimarc has produced a rotary kit upgrade for the servostik. They're even calling it the "Ikari 12-way Rotary Upgrade for Servostik, J-Stik". I wasn't sure if you'd seen this yet. I looked at the videos you'd uploaded since and didn't see one that looked like a review of it. I would think that a servostik with this kit would not only get you the most faithful recreation of the Ikari Warriors experience since the arcade used 8-way microswitch sticks, but it'd also be less expensive than the U-360, as well.

I like your reviews. My solution to get the correct feel for every single MAME game was to build a very large panel with all the specific sticks. So I have the Ikari style rotating stick from Suzo-Happ, a U360 and both 4 way and 8-way sticks (and the gamepad and flight sticks, too). Way, overkill, I know. Caveats: the servostik software is not infallible and I find that every new layer of firmware/software is a potential failure point; and Robotron requires 2x 8-way functionality so you have to have the U360 and servostick setup as you have done. Also keep in mind that really great emus like Model 2 and Model 3 may require other combinations of controls, thus the multi-button flight stick and top-fire stick, plus its good to have a set of USB pedals.

One thing to consider is the analog is quieter. While for authenticity the click is nice, but if you throw on headphones while the significant other is trying to read, the click can get really annoying. The analogs still have the thud if they 'bottom out' but after having a part over and digging out my old Hotrod, the clicking can get on your nerves especially during fighting games.

I don't recall if I attempted this, I would reach out to Andy from Ultimarc to confirm before deciding. The rotary isn't used for that many games. If I get the U360 and put the rotary kit on it, which requires either the 4/8 way or octagonal restrictor to be installed, which plate would you recommend putting on? Can the 4/8 way plate be moved by hand from under the panel or would it be easier to just use the octagonal and use the software to make it read as 4 or 8 way? My plan at the moment is to have the main joystick for both players be the flight stick with no plate just using software restriction and have an additional stick with the rotary just for player 1 since playing with others will probably be rare enough that it won't matter if both players have it.
@MavericksArcade
@MavericksArcade 4 ай бұрын
You can setup the restrictor to be adjusted by hand. I liked the feel of the restrictor. I actually setup a servostik restrictor on a U360 so it would switch automatically, but that is not officially supported by Andy. I use only servostiks on my big arcade machine, but I will end up using the U360's on my Arcade 1UP mod project. For that it will be 100% software restricted.

How do the servosticks handle new PC games, let's say I want to play FIFA on the thing. Will It detect even though it's designed for analog controls? Will modern games suffer from being 8 way instead of 64 ways as an analog joystick is (in this case u360s). Is the glide effect too noticeable on the u360s? Heyo! Apologies if my questions come off as a bit lazy/uninformed but I haven't been able to find a ton of information regarding the topic. Would it be possible to put the 360 into a standard arcade stick enclosure? If so, would I be able to hook it up to a Brooks Universal PCB and still have it as an analog output? Or, would I need to plug all the buttons into 360 and use the USB cable to plug them all into my PC/Console for it to work properly?
@MavericksArcade
@MavericksArcade 5 жыл бұрын
The U360 only connects with USB, so you could probably put a small USB hub inside the enclosure. Plus the U360 into the HUB, and your PCB in the hub as well. The only question then would be if you would need a USB powered hub or not :-/

@@MavericksArcade Heyo, sorry to bother you again but I figured I'd give an update on my U360 project. Is the point of the servostik just the auto-switching between locked 4 and 8 way? My current setup (not ultimarc) has a simple 8 way, and MAME seems to do fine with 4 way games. I believe the ServoStik is just a J-Stik with the motor attached. If you wanted just a 8-way joystick you could get a J-Stik with a fixed 8-way restrictor plate and that would do the job. You could also get the illuminated handle for the J-Stik, just like the servo-stik.

I've never considered these for any console systems, they're made just for PCs. The both respond quickly, but the accuracy for 4-8 way seems better to me with the servo as they're separate buttons. The u360 can be extremely accurate and use analog if configured well through the software. But personally, for console system emulation I use PS3 gamepads.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. I'm building a Smash Ultimate Arcade Machine and need a good 360 analog joystick.
@MavericksArcade
@MavericksArcade 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my concern has more to do with response time. In a game bad setup, you go from up/down/left/right with simple rolls of your thumb, even when it comes to sticks for consoles its a short distance stick. With an arcade joystick it's a larger stick and therefore a longer throw. Think of it like racing a manual shift car. Yeah, you can go fast with a normal gear selector, but you can shift much quick with a short-throw shifter because the travel distance between gears is much shorter. Same thing here, a full U360 joystick isn't going to be as quick as a PS3/4, Gamecube, N64 type controller.
@Austin_2600
@Austin_2600 5 жыл бұрын
@@MavericksArcade What about just shortening the stick so there isn't much travel distance? Would that work better? :ooo Even if the joystick isn't the best with the game, Imma add controller ports under the control panel anyways. Gotta have those options available.
@MavericksArcade
@MavericksArcade 5 жыл бұрын
@@Austin_2600 The issue is the long throw has to be enough to make it through the case and not hit the edges of the cutouts. I personally found that I liked the servostick better because the u360 wasn't handling diagonals as consistently as the physical switches. As far as the servo stick, you can get a left-right limiter, however, that can not be adjusted dynamically by the hardware. But, if you use the 4-way to 8-way limiter, it then at least gives more of the restricted feel like the original.

Just to clarify, the buttons wouldn't connect to the Joystick. The U360 is a USB joystick so it would be handled separately then the RGB buttons. Also there is a slight deadzone area in the stick, I have two of those and the from me enforced deadzone is around 5-10%. Given that this is basically the zone where there is no backforce (still getting signals for the movements in that zone but there is no clear zero zone the stick goes automatically back to) I am not sure if you can fix that on the hardware side. I have to disagree with your choice - the 360 can do Qbert & Congo Bongo or any diagonal game. The servo - NOPE! So you need ANOTHER stick for 4 way diagonal games. The "click" really is minor. Many arcades replaced original sticks when they wore out (which was often ) not all sticks have a solid tactile click - especially leaf spring sticks, which many consider better than the clicky microswitch sticks. Leaf switch sticks were often original on many machines - so clicks aren't necessarily "authentic". With proper programming, the 360s are as accurate as restricted sticks (or you can add the servo restricter ). Personally, I dont miss the resrictor. But I do want to add the rotator top. Lastly, the 360s do a fantastic job in analog mode and can play 48 way games like Sinistar accurately. The 360 is very hard to beat - especially if space is at a premium.
@MavericksArcade
@MavericksArcade 7 жыл бұрын
Brian Dormer the servo can be set for 8-way mode for diagonals. But to each their own :-). I've been able to get every game to work that's non-analog. I had some issues with the u360 going diagonal at times when I should have been just 4-way but I could have restricted it further digitally. I love the RGB handle which sealed the decision for me. I would like the rotator functionality but it wasn't critical for me. Someone linked in this conversation a hack that is the u360 with the servo AND the rotation. It's wicked!
@bdormer1
@bdormer1 7 жыл бұрын
Using the diagonals on an 8 way stick with games like Qbert, in my experience, leads to a really crummy gaming experience. While I agree it "CAN" work - I've never seen it work WELL. Programming the U360 to go diagonal is a little tricky (I don't know why Andy doesn't just publish a proper diagonal config) - but once you get it dialed in - it's equally as good as a dedicated 4 -way diagonal stick. My wife and I used to rock on Qbert in the arcade (for 50 cents - we could play for close to an hour). With the U360 - my scores are pretty similar to 'the old days'. The only disappointing thing with the U360s is the lack of RGB ball tops (I can live without it - but it is very cool looking). Apparently, the rotating top is quite pricey as well as currently out of stock. So I just may not do it - I never played IKARI in the arcades, so I really don't miss it.

the 360s are fantastic, I am using two of those for my analog control needs and I prefer them over a gamepad (longerh throw allows more precise analog movement) in a controller panel which scales up to modern analog stick games. The servos are on their way, lets see how they scale up (they are supposed to replace two IL magnetics which i am not happy with for 8 way controlled games)

Yeah the 360 is a fantastic stick, I am even playing modern 3d games with a pair of them in my setup (Witcher 3 is a no brainer, the same goes for older emulated games, like super monkey ball). The plus side of this is that you get a way more fine grained movement control that you would with a gamepad. The down side is, the button layout is a bit of getting used to gamepad controls -> arcade control layout do not map that well and then there is the lack of analog trigger buttons, a minor issue, only racing games use those in analog mode. The best combo is, if you have a game with mouselook and analog stick and you can use the 360 for analog movement and a trackball for mouselook.

Or is it only taking one control or another, not inputs from two seperate sources? I'm making guesses here so bear with me :-)

Thanks for the response. I figured it out after a few days of tinkering. I am using JoytoKey to handle the u360 and the minipac. Once in awhile I add Vjoy when needed.

Yes atm there is no board which takes the analog signals from the u360 not even the i-pacs to my knowledge, it is all usb, however the u360 has 8 button connectors so for simpler setups you might be able to just connect the 8 buttons to the analog stick and then push everything into one usb connection as one analog stick with 8 buttons. For more complicated setups you have to use an additional translator board and then combine everything with vjoy or something similar into one virtual stick.

thanks for the video could you let me know if you have a video on the U360 stick with the rotation function? along with the recommend parts I would require to build a joy stick with the rotation. I was hoping to make my build for both arcade games retro consoles I was hoping to see if i could use this function for games like golden eye from the n64 with a light gun. Could you let me know if that would be possible?

I know they have rotation controls out there, but I haven't personally been able to experience these yet.

can you set either of these two joysticks 2-way, 4-way, 8-way automatically? The servostik can do it automatically but can it do 2-way as well? can the u360 also do the transition automatically?

The servo sticks are 4-way or 8-way, it does not restrict 2 way. The U360 is digital and you can restrict the input however you'd like using the software. The mapping is done through a mapping file which can be applied to the command line. If I was going to do that, I'd probably make another MAME emulator setting with the 2-way defined so it would run before 2-way games. Check out my video specifically on the Servo stick to see how I recommend to handle the game changes.
