I just went back and listened to Ultravox whole catalog. Their early stuff, especially with Midge Ure was phenomenal. Saw Midge Ure in concert about 6 years ago. Outstanding band

Love Ultravox…my fave tracks…Thin Wall, Western Promise, the voice, passing strangers, white China…..and John Foxx is worth a look too…Systems of Romance

The Voice is another good song of theirs. Midge was also in a band called Visage, which had a few great tracks, you may recall Fade to Grey? That was smoking hot.

Their only hit in Australia was ''Vienna'', but we were familiar with their other singles like ''The Thin Wall'' and ''Passing Strangers'', which give me tinges of nostalgia. Part of the appeal of "Vienna'' was the music video that was directed by Australian director Russell Mulcahy, who had previously worked on Australian TV for a music program called 'Sounds', as the in-house music-video creator. Brilliant song and video. As you realised, it worked on many levels. Their first three albums (with Midge) are classics but their second album 'Rage in Eden' is a masterpiece. I recommend Reap the Wild Wind or Love's Great Adventure or 'The Thin Wall'.

I liked Ultravox. They had a great sound. Not all business people want contracts written in blood. By the same token, i know that the music industry is the devil incarnate.

Thank you for this reaction. My personal music collection started with three cassette tapes in 1984 - Spandau Ballet 'Parade', Nik Kershaw 'The Riddle' and Ultravox 'Collection'. As a keen audiophile entering his 40th year of accumulating music, it was truly wonderful to be taken back to where it all (sort of) began.

I prefer the earlier days of Ultravox with John Foxx on vocals. My favourite Midge Ure era track is Dancing With Tears In My Eyes & the Rage In Eden record is pretty good ..Produced by Conny Plank.

As a child of punk I always found, and still do find, the 1980s a bit bland. Especially the electro pop stuff like this. There was tonnes of great music in the 80s, but most was more underground stuff. I am going to ask you again to give Trouble on Oxford Street by Skinny Lister a listen. Great feel good music from more recent times, and a brilliant video to go with it.

I’ve read some of the comments before I pressed play and as some have pointed out there’s 2 definite and different versions of Ultravox. There’s the original one with the vastly overrated John Foxx and the 2nd one is the hugely successful version fronted by Midge Ure . The purists will murmur and roll their eyes at the “ sell out” version with Midge and hanker after an earlier more austere , stripped back , less melodic , less successful , less sung in tune and ultimately, less commercially successful. John Foxx walked away from the band to go solo only to find out his Spartan dirges actually didn’t sell and he went down the toilet kinda rapid tbh - underpass ( which I bought btw ) was his most well known solo track before it became obvious he was a talentless nob ! .. I actually hate him .. 👀 And then there was the version with Midge Ure who actually COULD sing and COULD write a melody and COULD make a damn good living out of it . I remember midge ure in a band called slick in the 70s , then came the rich kids, he even had a spell in thin Lizzy , up against guitar players like , Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham, Iv often wondered why? , but personally I think his biggest blame is for that song " Vienna".
