I still can't hear this song without emotion. I remember hearing this in the winter of 1981 and this song alongside "If Only" from the same album have stayed with me ever since. And that sax solo by Wesley Magoogan must surely be one of the best sax solos of all time?

This is one of my all time favourite romantic songs. And I just love the sax solo to the end. It's so beautiful but still alternative enough to be uniquely different. If the woman of my dreams isn't impressed by this on my mix tape of romance then she's probably not the woman of my dreams anymore 🤣 Another great and almost companion piece to follow this is Stay With Me Til Dawn by Judie Tzuke from 1979. Another woman who had one big hit even though she continues to this day writing and performing new music. It's very beautiful. I highly recommend you listen to it.

This song is stunning, and captures perfectly the sense of 'should we, shouldn't we' uncertainty. Hazel was an extremely talented songwriter (and you were right about her being 'artsy') though this song isn't exactly typical of her usually more upbeat style - you should listen to 'Eighth Day' or maybe 'D-Days' to get the balance.

I think if you are lucky in your life you have a transcendent moment, and this was Wesley Magoogan's on saxophone. His career was literally cut short in unfortunate circumstances. Hazel O'Connor was an actress more than a singer, similar to Julie Covington, who originated the role of Evita, in that regard, never quite able to sit easily in the mainstream.

Hazel O'Connor is a British New Wave singer. In 1980, she was the star of a British New Wave music film, "Breaking Glass". I remember watching this film on HBO, and I never saw the world the same way again. I was a teenager when the film came out, and it changed my whole view on life, America, and the world. Anyone who wants to have a better understanding of the political and cultural environment in the UK during the "New Wave Era" MUST watch "Breaking Glass". Some notes: "Will You?" was part of the "Breaking Glass" Soundtrack Album. In 1980, Duran Duran was the opening act for Hazel O'Connor's 1980 US Tour.

Hazel O'Connor an actress and singer/songwriter who starred in a film called "Breaking Glass" which she also wrote the songs for, I used to play the soundtrack album of the film quite loud annoying my parents! There's so many great tracks on the album including "Eighth Day" - I guess because of her background she does have a bit of a theatrical delivery. Interestingly at the same time there was another actress singer/songwriter who ultimately made an impact in the UK and Europe - Toyah Willcox who fronted a bank called Toyah. Hazel was going to appear with Toyah on a 1980s revival tour, but earlier this year Hazel collapsed at her home in France from what later determined to brain haemorrhage, unfortunately she's still in a very poorly condition, I hope that she's able to make a recovery.

They are good pals, and ironically, even though Toyah at the time had more experience in film/tv than Hazel, they both went for the audition for the lead for Breaking Glass but H got it, she thinks for her life experience and willing to write the songs. I just watched the film for 1st time recently and it is excellent and I feel better than Quadrophenia, but the soundtrack in isolation is made up of brilliant tracks including this stunning ballad.

To appreciate this piece one must also see the film "Breaking glass" - a tale of success wrapped in sorrow and pain. I must go back and watch it again. To me it's not a song that is repeated by a sax solo, it's very much part of the track to add "power" and emotion to what was a very emotional film. Nice to see it being reacted to though, many years after it's release.

It felt like it could be interpreted in either direction. Did her date finish by staying, and having a night, or is she sitting in her living room now, thinking about what didn't happen? I say it's deliberately open ended. Take it how you will.

Intriguing you didn't know this before, and interesting comparison to Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper. While she's closer in age to Lauper, she debuted around the same time as Bush or soon after, a few years before Lauper. What may have kept her a bit hidden from the local American market is that like Bush, she hails from Britain... unlike Lauper who came out of Brooklyn, but while Bush's music was unique and theatrical she was a little more mainstream and conventional, while O'Connor was very much more on the edge of the new wave / alternative genre, almost dipping into British punk rock - listen to another hit of hers off the same album, On The Eighth Day. As for the song "Will You", in circles where British pop was big, this was a super huge romantic makeout song in the early 80s. Just hearing the song takes me back 40 years, with all the great memories that go along with that. Thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed watching your reactions to this most beautiful song, but I feel perhaps it might have been better if you'd not been reading the lyrics as it was playing, instead letting the song unfold for you as it most likely did for most of us the first time we heard it. That said, it was interesting to watch your differing reactions to certain lines that appear to have starting you thinking. Thing is, this remains an important, timeless song as although the lyrics are genderless and non-specific regarding sexuality, it nonetheless appears to represent perfectly the late teenage awkwardness of desire from a female perspective - at least it does for me. It certainly sets us thinking. Did we stay? Or did we leave?
