So he reunited the country and tried to promote the rights the civil war had been fought for... I can forgive him for having a few dodgy friends. He should be in the top rankings for presidents not the bottom.

Yeah, but he was extremely corrupt. He was a great general, but not meant for politics. The people he trusted were very corrupt which ended up making him an overall poor president.

@@UnitedStates17 Grant was one of the most honest and humble presidents. His corrupt friends were taking advantage of his modesty and outgoingness, he was arguably the first civil rights presidents and he is the best American. Came from nothing and became a gigantic something, he's a top 10 president, hell I'd argue a top 5

@@JosephSampson Let's relax a bit. I hope you have done some research in his presidency because he was a great general and a great man for this country, but unfortunately a horrible president. He had corrupt friends which was the reason why his overall presidency became corrupt. He doesn't have that many significant accomplishments that you can talk about as he had a poor presidency. If I made a list of the greatest presidents in order from best to worst, he'd be in about 30th place. There are so many great presidents you are forgetting if you seriously think he is worthy of the top 10 best presidents, let alone top 5.

Grant is way too underrated as a president (even if not a top 5 president), and I’m glad modern opinion of him is getting better: 1. Paid down US Debt with Gold, curbing the high inflation in the economy 2. Prosecuted the KKK 3. Civil Rights and Amendments 4. Tried to help Native Americans 5. Prevented war with Spain 6. Didn’t overreact to the Panic and likely prevented it’s lengthening by letting it settle without too much interference (sticking to the gold standard). 7. Overly faulted for corrupt friends in government, despite everyone admitting he was honest. 8. Kept the country together

1. 15th amendment was ratified 2. Broke up the KKK 3. Civil Rights Act of 1875 4. The Enforcement Acts 5. Naturalization Act of 1870 6. Fought for rights of Native Americans 7. Former confederate states were readmitted to the union 8. Treaty of Washington 9. Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 with Hawaii 10. Virginius Affair settled peacefully 11. Created the Department of Justice 12. Resumption of Specie Act 13. Paid down the national debt by 435 million dollars 14. Lowered interest rates 15. Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge began 16. Created America’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park 17. Presided over the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad 18. Declared Christmas to be a national holiday 19. Humble and honest 20. Post Office Act of 1872

@@normie7389 yah…Wilson wasn’t ALL bad, but he WAS a huge racist (not just of the “I don’t like non-whites” type, but of the “segregating the federal workforce type! Also, Wilson jailed political opponents, stripped civil liberties, and left the world much worse off by not helping the Allies create a LASTING peace. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that the Germans weren’t at fault (they were), but forcing the abdication of the Kaiser did nothing but open a power vacuum, as well as making the war indemnity & punishments TOO severe for them to not come out the other side susceptible to someone like Hitler; it was bad diplomacy, and Wilson could have helped temper this more a peace that lasted, an indemnity that could’ve actually been paid & left the economy of Germany in tact (thus making them less likely to be ruined & turn to a strongman like Hitler), and made the political situation more safe for the following decades.

This 60-seconds on Grant completely ignores the fact that Grant wasn't political and never wanted to be President, which explains why he left (trusted?) the Congress and his political cronies alone in their political shenanigans. By the way, the initial big political scandal blamed during Grant's administration actually occurred secretly during the prior Johnson administration (whom Grant despised). It only became public during Grant's presidency, and sloppy historians have been blaming Grant ever since.

Hi, Sean, Yes, Grant is an interesting figure. The corruption in his presidency was something he apparently would just not see. He apparently did his best on race relations. Some people have called him our first "Civil Rights President." He served in the war with success. But his presidency was a mess. For he was surrounded By officials not grounded In good will or ethics, I guess! ------------ Limerick Rex

Fun fact: All of the spending from the Civil War and the printing of Greenbacks caused high inflation to persist and harm the economy. Though I’ve heard people say that they think it was the wrong move (and as part of the cause of a recession), by all indicators, Grant’s pushing for all debts to be paid back in gold only helped bring inflation down to a healthy level, restoring long-term prosperity. He “bit the bullet” of going through a hard, but necessary economic correction (recession) to bring back true economic prosperity. Also, he kept us out of war with Spain, so he should get credit for that. Though flawed, he did a lot of good actually.

Reconstruction was such a delicate time for the states and how Andrew Johnson performed, Grant taking it altogether to ratify the 15th Amendment and destroying KKK, irrespective of people may say or not, he did a lot and had he not been there, the situation of freed African Americans would be worse. And for everyone accusing Grant for corruption in his government, he died extremely poor. It was his friends who blotched his name for a good part of history. He deserves to be celebrated as a President as he is as as the most coveted general of all times in U.S. history!

Also add to that he tried to help Native Americans and was disgusted by the Mexican/American War which he thought was unfair and unnecessary. In my opinion his rise to presidency was more unlikely than Lincoln in the fact that Grant had so many setbacks and failures compared to Lincoln, who also had his fair share in tragedy, but not as big as Grant was in my opinion.
