Um, actually, placing the negative end on the battery will do nothing at all. If it's a closed circuit, then you're not gonna have any problems unless you have a crappy cable, in which case the cable will be fried. Just jumped a car last week, and everything was just fine.

Um Actually this is correct. Jumping a car battery can be done with either a closed circuit or a grounded circuit (the term for putting this one negative side on a metallic surface of the car [good luck finding on these plastic crap bags we call cars now btw])

fireblazercc Can confirm. And you _do_ want to connect the black negative cables first, going from the dead battery to the working battery. (dead - to good -, dead + to good +) Then remove in reverse order when you are done. This is because the red positive terminal is the live part that you don't want to touch.

Umm, actually, the reason you want to make the negative connection last, and make it to a ground point instead of to the negative post of the battery, is because making the last connection (and the first connection break) often generates sparks which may ignite the hydrogen gas that can be released from a charging lead-acid battery. Electrically, however, making the connection directly to the battery is better since there's less overall resistance in the circuit.

Um actually, modern battery terminals have grounds built into them, therefore making all of you guys' corrections invalid. Any car made from 96-present is grounded through the battery terminals.

Um Actually in Game of Thrones (the show) Hodor's actual name is Wyllis, in the book (A Song of Ice and Fire) his grandmother Old Nan says his name is Walder. BUT: this episode is old enough that it actually came out BEFORE Game of Thrones Season 6, Episode 5: The Door, which revealed Hodor's name as Wyllis in the show and the origin of the name "Hodor" so they're only wrong retroactively.

totally irrelevant, but in the Harry Potter universe in quidditch at the professional level they make the snitch so hard to catch that the 150 at the end is basically just a nice bonus. since the game can't end until someone catches the snitch, there have been instances of quidditch matches lasting for days.

Um actually if you remember back to Goblet Of Fire it is possible to catch the snitch but lose the game: Bulgaria caught the snitch but Ireland won the game because they had more points so the quaffle is very important.

David Berg Well, while that's interesting to know, but the point remains. 150 points is just too high of a score. Very rarely will the quaffle score points do anything. You need to be ahead by 16 goals when the other team catches the snitch or you lose anyway. And the enemy team would have to be really terrible to be that far behind.

This actually took place in the World Cup on the 4th HP book. Ireland was ahead by a huge amount, so when Krum caught the snitch for Bulgaria, they still lost. However, I agree it does seem like an absurd amount of points.

...is that last thing true? Because I've jump started a number of cars - well, two cars, but multiple times - and we've never grounded the negative terminal. Just both batteries hooked up to one another. Never had any sparks fly or batteries explode, the car just starts up and all is well. Have i just been getting obscenely lucky this whole time?

Last thing is wrong. Except for automatic cars and some modern cars (From what I have seen) where they hide the negative terminal and you have to find a grounded part of the car

Mechanic here...does not matter. Connecting to a grounded metal part of the car is the same as direct to the negative terminal. Your connecting two batteries in parallel.

John Doe I very seldom attach the last clamp to the metal on the car to ground it. Supposedly the reason for doing this is to lesson the chances of a spark igniting vapors that may be coming from the battery which could possibly cause an explosion. I've jump started a bunch of cars and have (knock on wood) never had a battery blow up on me yet. BTW, the negative terminal is not hidden on batteries in the US regardless of whether they are for automatic or manual transmissions.

Um actually, connecting the negative clamp to a grounded metal has the same effect as connecting to the negative terminal, it's still on the same circuit. Moving the ground clamp away from the battery ensures any sparks won't ignite the hydrogen gas that lead acid batteries emit.

Um, actually the Snitch is worth 150 points because of historical reasons. An important wizard once brought a Golden Snidget, a small bird, to a game of Quidditch and offered 150 Galleons - a small fortune - to anyone who killed it. Everyone started chasing it, until a woman caught it and released it outside the stadium. After that, Golden Snidgets were brought to every Quidditch game, until so many were killed that they had to invent the Golden Snitch to catch to save the population. The 150 points is a reference to the 150 Galleons offered at the first game.

Also may I just anwser why players don't only focus on catching the Snitch... A quaffle (the ball) through the hoop gets the scoring team 10 points. Catching the golden snitch gets the team 150 points and ends the game. Now if team A scores 170 points and team B is at 10, even if team B catches the snitch, team A would win the match. This is exactly what happened in the Quidditch World Cup final between Bulgaria and Ireland in The Goblet Of Fire. Bulgarian seeker Viktor Krum caught the snitch, but Ireland won the match. You see, catching the snitch only ENDS the match. The team catching the snitch doesn't win automatically. The winner is decided only by the final score.

+Brad Saint George Yep... even though it is the same many would tell you that the body of the car is actually negative 0 volts not ground, except some define ground as 0 volt difference... it gets nasty. In short you're right it is the "same" (unless your battery has a slow leak which has corroded the terminals therefore not supplying proper amperage to the system when you just connect to the battery)

Um actually, Saying Endor first refers to the Forest moon of Endor, before the actual gas planet Endor. Forest Moon of Endor and Sanctuary Moon are actually A.K.A.'s of Endor. It's because Endor is more known than the actual gas planet it orbits, more commonly known as Tana from the natives of Endor (moon). So you are all wrong.

Um, actually.... There is definitely a reason that Quidditch teams should do more than chase the snitch, because in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Ireland won the Quidditch world cup because Krum caught the Golden Snitch when Bulgaria was 160 points behind. Also, beaters have very important jobs because they keep their seekers from getting clobbered by the bludger, and they can clobber the other team's seeker with a bludger.

Actually, the reason everyone in Harry Potter Quidditch doesn't just look for the snitch is because you can still win the game even if your team DOESN'T catch the snitch. The idea is that the game will only end if the snitch is caught. There is even a mentioning in the books about a Quidditch game going for 3 days because no one could catch the snitch. An example of a team winning without catching the snitch would be if your team is so awesome that it scores 151 points with just Bludger scores and Quaffle scores, and the other team has 0. Then the other team catches the snitch and ends the game and gets 150 points, but since your team had 151, you guys win by 1 point. So for an example, the game that went for 3 days, one team could have had 1200 points and the other 1000. The team with only 1000 finally caught the snitch, but still lost because they were behind 50 point even after catching the snitch. That an some people just aren't good at finding the snitch.

Still a stupid sport dictated by the actions of one player 90% of the time One player who isn't involved with the flow of normal plays actions are worth 150% of the teamwork and skill that the other players use. Wizards might be able to use magic but leave sport to us muggles.

Um, actually, there is nothing in Quidditch called a Bludger score. The Quaffle is the only thing that scores points apart from the Snitch. The Quaffle always scores 10 points no matter what hoop you throw it through. Also, the famous Quidditch game mentioned lasted for 3 months and they had to constantly swap out players. A good example of a game won by the team that didn't catch the Snitch is the World Cup in the fourth book where Viktor Krum caught the Snitch for Bulgaria but Ireland won anyway.

yes, (and to be proper) Um, Actually only reason that people are told to do that is to prevent the fumes that the dead battery could emit from being ignited by any sort of arching as you attach/detach the cable by moving the possible archs away form the dead batery

Yep. However, most batteries today are fine, especially the sealed batteries. Connect negative to chassis just to be safe.

um actually, if you do it properly when you complete the circuit of a dead and live battery it'll distribute the electricity between them, if the car is running with the live battery it'll effectively charge the dead battery.

UM, ACTUALLY just before Harry Potter's fourth year, he attend a major Quidditch game where the team who got the Golden Snitch actually lost the game just because the other team had so many more points. It's dumb if you think about it, because why would you end the game if you know you'll lose?

It's also explained in the book that Krum knew his team would never catch up, so he wanted to preserve some dignity and at least be the one to catch the Snitch.

joe3000abc! well the point was that it was clear (to him, at least) that his team wouldn't be able to pull ahead. Given more time, perhaps they would've lagged even further behind instead of scoring those two goals.

Um actually you can connect the black wire from the running car to the battery and it will still work because you will complete the circuit because the negative post is connected to the negative terminal on the car and you will get the same result. Also you should hook up the positive to both the cars, the negative on the dead car, then the negative on the live car.

Um actually the negative end of your car battery is grounded to the chassis of your car so its be the same as connecting it to the negative stud and would have the same effect and it won't cause any sparks unless you touch the two alligator clamps together

In grade school "Actually..." was left as my 8th grade quote. When it was asked if anyone was interested in participating in a mock trial, both classes turned to me and I turned towards the wall to look in the same direction as everyone else as if I didn't know what was happening. For an "Um actually....": um actually in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Viktor Krum successfully caught the snitch in the Quidditch World Cup and lost the game. It was quite apparent that his team was going to lose regardless, so he caught it to end the game while it was somewhat close. So catching the snitch doesn't always win, it just nearly always wins the game. I'm not an unparalleled nerd. I'm just an unashamed nerd who often knows when to speak up.

Posie Plums Yeah, that's cool. I relax a bit, but I try to remain mostly grammatically correct. I just know some people who won't punctuate sentences, and then there are multiple ways to interpret them. So I try to do punctuation, capitalization, and spelling in particular. It'd take me much longer if I couldn't let smaller errors go.

I was screaming at this video "WALDER IT'S WALDER C'MON PEOPLE!!" Then I just kept yelling Walder and it became Wador. Sidenote; I still don't get how the whole warging thing happened. Bran warged into past hodor? Present day Hodor? And gave him accidently a psychic message to 'hold the door'. But it was Meera who screamed "Hold the door"... I don't know. Bran showed yound Walder images of the present, ie. his death? Or purposefully warged into Hodor(? Or Walder) that he would hold the door? I am now way more confused than what I was before I started writing this.

Um actually chasing the golden snitch isn't the only thing the whole team should do, as demonstrated by the world cup final where Ireland beat Bulgaria even though Bulgaria was the team that got the snitch: by that time, Ireland had already scored enough points to overcome Bulgaria's score +150.

UMMMM ACTUALLY, It is FINE, to connect the final negative clamp to the dead batteries Negative terminal. It results in no bad results. It might even charge the battery a little quicker. It also doens't really matter. You CAN also charge the battery leaving that clamp off. HOWEVER, it is important to note that most modern cars have primarily fiberglass frames, and finding a peace of stable mettle that the clamp can actually be secured safley to can often be difficult and dangerous. I have found that in most cases it is safer and easier to just attach the final Negative clamp to the dead batteries negative terminal and call it a day.

Positive to positive and negative to engine or chassis connect (which is connected to the negative through grounding) this insures that any sparks are away from the battery to prevent ignition of the gases in a dead battery.
