Clarification: I call ep 1-6 'filler' facetiously. They are integral and enjoyable but I personally liked how 7 & 8 brought everything to an unprecedentedly satisfying climax. I say this for anyone (including my past self) who dismissed the payoff and shelved it. If you've started don't give up, its more than worth it!

@@Chunglevision There's more to it than that. Personally, the way it delves into truth as a philosophical subject was what impacted me the most. The idea that something can be true on one level whilst not being exactly categorically true on the other was something that changed my life and understand faith better. I can confidently say that my entire paradigm about how I approach my faith has been strengthened by reading Umineko, I could even argue that it was what helped me sort out my internal conflict with me staying in my faith despite feeling a relatively strong pull towards atheism. Umineko is a great story, but it's also an amazing dialogue around truth and epistemology.

Umineko is one of the most underrated fiction and story in general, not just “visual novel” genre. I’m so glad you enjoyed and even make a video spreading love about it! Everything from characters design, storytelling and music is just masterpiece. I’ve been telling my friends to try it but so many avoided because not everyone has a great attention span nowadays, they just find it boring within 5 min into the story. Umineko is definitely a masterpiece with its story, its mystery, it's themes and its messages all intertwined together. It's a story that tells you the truth the entire time, but has to wait for you to view it with love to see it. I'm rereading it now, and it's insane how much Ryukishi07 was about to fit into every _line_ of text. Everything is important, every line of text has meaning and purpose. You said that you have to get through "filler", but the truth is that there isn't any: everything, *everything* has meaning, and it's amazing to see when you look back through the story. Umineko is my favorite piece of fiction of all time. Sleep peacefully, my most beloved witch, Beatrice.

Umineko is a story which can be interpreted in so many ways and while the actual truth has a certain flow it does not undermine the perspective of the audience and that is one of the most beautiful thing about it. It tells us to believe in miracles even if we have to create it ourselves. It's mind-blowing how well Umineko being an extremely sad story mangages to convey the message of moving on with your life

If you think about it, the main plot of the story is inspired in Dante's poem You have to reread to take this into consideration but Beatrice was secretly helping Battler through EP 1-4 to understand her, she even said to him that if she wins the door to the Golden Land will be opened where his family is waiting for him So then you can connect that understand Beatrice = enter the Golden Land Then you have the questions to spot the culprit... Who, how and why. There is a scene with Ange when she comes with the question about what "without love, it cannot be seen" means because closed rooms are just logical puzzles... You can answer who and how with just reason, but to answer why you have to understand the characters... See them with love (also the story clearly states the why as the most important thing) If I understood well what Dante was trying to say then it's clear that to enter paradiso you have to adquire reason and love Also the ending with Battler seeing in the face of the children his family can make me really start sobbing now, and with the context of the Comedy you can understand that Ryukishi was writing to the concept of love with the final image. For me Umineko really is a Masterpiece in storytelling, the only thing I dont agree is that 1-6 sre unnecesary but well it took me a reread to understand why, things like the authorship change of Yasuda and Tohya, how every character is not blamed in the story because their actions are lead by society ideals (and then fate itself) or the goats analogy as people who couldn't "see" the heart of the story just to feel more intelectual (Erika was a hint to not have this approach) are a lot more clear in reread Either way I enjoyed a lot the video

If you liked Umineko I really recommend you to read Higanbana no saku yoru ni, the work Ryukishi made after Umineko. Umineko is my top 1 piece of media I've consumed, but I think Higanbana is Ryukishi's Magnum Opus, as it tocuhes more obscure and taboo themes related to what children have to live through school, like abuse, bullying, grief, etc. It also is more straightforward (in some occasions) on the message it wants to convey. Ryukishi worked as a civil servant for 15 years, and in this work he really shows what kind of problems he had to help people through

Thank you so much! There is no videos on youtube analysing the relationship of intertextuality between Umineko and classics, im taking latin and greek classes in my philosophy degree and it's amazing how umineko relates with almost all occidental literature. Also, I think that the "magical explanation" is not the only one connected with philosophy, although it maybe is the only one that is connected with metaphysics. The "mistery explanation" has a connection with the epistemological and logical problems of analytical philosophy. This is made explicit by making use of Hempel's raven, but it can be noticed through the work when ryukishi talks about the problem of truth, in addition to the fact that the red truths are logical propositions true in all possible worlds. Love your video!

To your "theres a lot of filler" point: I can only somewhat agree with you. Yes, there is a lot of content that will not apply for everyone, but its my belief that 90% of all scenes help any and all type of readers understand both the mystery and what "love" is to the stories themes. Additionally (and only if you got the time for it), its advised to go through a second read after learning the "truth" of it all. It reeaalllyyy recontectualizes most to all scenes, its nuts. This especially applies to the Question Arcs (1-4) and 5 + 6. Every scene has their purpose, and every reader is different; how every reader interacts with a scene will always be different, and they solve smaller mysteries as a result of them, its great. Glad to hear you loved the journey, cheers!

@@adolfoviruet7481 IMO the "fights" between Beatrice and Shannon/Kanon in Episode 2 are probably the most meaningful scenes in the entire game. Episode 1/2 (but particularly 2) are very meaningful in general, since they're the only episodes directly written by "Beatrice" herself, and 2 specifically contains parts that are basically just her direct thoughts in the form of Beatrice/Shannon/Kanon interactions.

Excellent review. One criticism tho. Around 3:05 I'd argue the first five episodes of Umineko are largely more important than the last three, with Episode 5 possibly being the most important. They're just less memorable. Episode 7 and 8 are really good because they tie together the themes that all the previous episodes have explored up to that point. You don't really hear anything new in 7 and 8, but instead it rephrases and effectively "spells out" the messages and the mysteries that were covered in the first 4 episodes. Even Episode 5 is really just hammering in the message of "without love it cannot be seen," and once Battler takes it to heart, he realizes everything. The final question in Episode 8 is really the author finally asking you point blank if you understand his message.

Hahaha yeah, completely agreed, very good analysis. At its core, Umineko really is a literary masterpiece of unparalleled depth and layered meanings, with some truly incredible characters that are either fascinating and complex or just so balls-to-the wall entertaining. Its big issue is it sorely needed an editor - the author kept releasing it as 2 books per year, which is absolutely nuts for this type of story. Forthermore, Umineko spends a majority of its time gaslighting you and you really have to get down with its absurdity to enjoy the ride, as it hides its true meanings behind facades and misdirections, leaving you completely clueless as to what you're supposed to be getting from it, sometimes asking yourself whether it's even enjoyable. Once it does hit you with its true intentions and contextualizes itself, it absolutely is life-altering in the way it manages to reframe your thinking, paralleled in the character journeys of Battler and Ange, mirrored with that of Erika and Bernkastel. Re-reading Umineko is more than just being able to spot all the foreshadowing in the mystery, it's literally a whole new experience. I'm someone who prefers the Trick ending, actually. Because what Umineko taught me is that reality and the way we view the world isn't rigid, but a universe of contradictions that we somehow have to reconcile in our minds. Ange losing her faith in love and becoming an Erika, while still keeping the fantasy image of her in her mind is just as poetically tragic to me as her embracing the love and living a fulfilling life despite the tragedy, with her beliefs made firmer in her understanding of them.

I feel the same about it. This might sound weird, but the reason it impacted me so much is that I had been dealing with opiate addiction since around ~2009 (I've been on suboxone maintenance for years now, but I read Umineko back in 2015 before I got on it). While the issues faced by "Beatrice" (and other characters) in the story are obviously different, I feel like, on a really fundamental level, Umineko's author understands how people cope with suffering (for both better and worse). The reflexive use of "magic" to deal with a painful life was/is something very familiar to me. I also really appreciate the way Umineko takes what is, at its core, a deeply depressing story, but makes it into something more "colorful" and exciting. This is something extremely rare in fiction - it usually tries to treat serious topics with gravity and a serious/dour tone, but I feel like that doesn't paint a full picture of the people involved. As much as I like The House at Fata Morgana (it's probably my second favorite VN), I prefer Umineko's approach to similar subject matter.

I swear for the four years after I read it, I would think about Umineko at least once a day. It sounds insane, but it's true. It's disappointing to see people who do not get, or do not agree with the message. But for me it's just amazing, not just because of the great message, but the mystery itself, the hints, the details, the parallels, there's so much to bite into even after you're done reading. Anyways, I could go all day, but suffice it to say, I still love Umineko.

Umineko is amazing. I read it when it first started releasing in 2007-2008 and just the other day out of the blue I had a sudden eureka moment regarding Hachijou Ikuko's identity. In addition to the actual mysteries you're urged to solve, there are a lot of unannounced secrets. Perhaps many of you solved everything as soon as you read the thing, but 17 year old me did not. It's funny how choosing to believe in magic in the end is what allowed me to see what I needed to discern the cold hard logical truth. I happen to have the Divine Comedy on my bookshelf. Should probably get to reading it. By the way have you read Berserk? It's sort of an amalgamation of Nietzsche's writings, with some Jung, Homer, Greek tragedy and Catholicism.

(SPOILER WARNING) I'm glad you enjoyed Umineko. And it's interesting hearing the thoughts of someone who seems to be mainly a reader of normal books. Umineko too has changed my life and the way I look at things in general, and is pretty much my favorite piece of fiction of all times. It's a masterpiece, from its characters, to its themes, to its amazing soundtrack, etc. No other fiction has made me feel so many emotions as Umineko did. Loving one of the most complex characters I've ever seen, Beatrice, to loving to hate one of the most gremlins to ever exist, Erika. Feeling the pain the entire tragedy has caused on poor Ange. Following Battler's incredible development as he goes from someone wanting to deny everything about magic and witches, to eventually understanding the heart of the story and accepting Beatrice. "And then I knew..." from EP5 is one of my favorite moments ever, especially with Promise playing. The double Ricordando ill Passato scenes in EP8 made me cry like a little baby, how can a story have such a perfect ending? And so many other wonderful moments... Everything. I loved everything about this story.

Good video, I really need to read Dante's Divine Comedy sometime, and I'm glad there are more people in the world that enjoy this piece of fiction as much as I do. I challenge the idea that episodes 1-6 though are filler, I think when you truly look at them there is a lot of great stuff going on there, and a lot of it can thematically tie back very far (especially episode 4, a personal favorite of mine).

Absolutely, I meant moreso that its all paid off and really comes together the last 2 as to what the author is trying to express. And that can't happen without the foundation.

That final question in the final part of the story is one that I still have no answer for. I got stuck on that part, thinking for about 10 minutes before giving up and picking both in order just to see the endings, but to this day I'm still not sure which one I would rather choose. And it's been years ever since I read it.

Umineko is a fascinating text for sure. I’m curious whether or not Ryukishi is personally a man of religious faith, what with the thesis of love/faith having the power to transcend provable empirical truth. Umineko was something of a conflicting/challenging read for me because while Ryukishi essentially presents a defense of faith that is quite compelling and emotionally resonant, I’m not sure I quite agree with the core philosophical argument he’s making even by the end of the story. I get the sense that Ryukishi doesn’t think someone can be truly happy or at peace without some kind of faith or belief, bound to end up miserable like Erika. I wonder whether a more secular version of belief - belief in the inherent goodness and compassion of others for example - could also be a way to arrive at the “gold truths” of life as well without the supernatural baggage, or if it has to be a kind of explicitly religious/supernatural belief in Ryukishi’s eyes.

The thing is, secular or not, faith is a necessary component to life. You need to have faith in something, institutions, the scientific method, measures of life satisfaction or even that your own experiences are real and valid. Science is not a monolith, hard sciences tend to be devoid of morality, and the softer sciences though more morally influenceable are easy to corrupt with zeitgeist. The closest thing that I've seen to achieving wisdom and morality through secular means is evolutionary epistemology, specifically as it is applied to understand the framework of belief itself and why beliefs and faith evolve the way that they do. Whether you like it or not, religion has a very powerful evolutionary advantage, especially for a race as social as humans are. Having a shared core makes us stronger and can and will make your life better, even if what is at the core isn't categorical truth, it's still true because it works and has worked for so many people at many different times. The core of that faith that made Ange stronger was seen at the end of her life, when she rescued a family icon and tradition (the support to the orphanage) and used it for good. I'm religious myself, so I am biased, but to borrow the words of Christ: "By their fruits ye shall know them". Some epistemological cores are trash for living life, Erika is a great example here. Other epistemological cores can be flawed but still lead to good results, to life satisfaction and good outcomes in your own choices and respect for others. Ultimately, both what you describe, and religion are an attempt to find the most objective, most effective and most satisfying epistemological core over the long run. That quest is one worth doing regardless of where your beliefs stand. Ultimately, beliefs can and should change as they are tested and proved effective or ineffective.

I don't think that's quite the point he's making. I think Ryukishi's point is simply that there's more to people than just "the things they've done and have happened to them." The "without love it can't be seen" stuff is just referring to the fact that you should try to understand people and have empathy for them. So even though it doesn't condone the actions of characters like Rosa or Kinzo, it still thinks that you should try to understand them. And in the context of the greater mystery, understanding the full character of "Beatrice" is necessary to truly understand what happened and why it happened. Merely knowing the exact sequence of events that transpired doesn't give you the whole story. I don't think Umineko is directly supporting the idea of "magic," but simply explaining why some people use/need it. (The next "When They Cry" game, Higanbana, also more explicitly pushes back against the idea of "relying on faith/'magic' to get through life)

Great video and review! I will disagree when you say that there is a lot of filler, I didn't realize until my second time reading but every scene has a real purpose. Even the comedy scenes have an actual story purpose once you analyze the dialogue and see how everything links together. The multiple layers of storytelling and mystery all come together to form a very beautiful big picture and Ryukishi really wasted no time even when the story is longer than multiple bibles.

I don't really agree with there being a lot of filler. What you are thinking about here, to be more specific, is that a lot of scenes don't tie in with what you identified as the main theme or main question for the series, and that's absolutely true. However, what you unintentionally ignore when you are saying that is that there are other questions that you may not have posed yourself. I found that rereading the filler material after reaching the philosophical conclusion of the series lets you see things that you didn't see before. Both questions and answers.

That last choice was genuinely the hardest choice I've ever had to make within a game. I did see it slightly differently from you, I remember one of the critical decision points for me 'is the happiness of Ange more important than the truth?' Having said that, possibly the hardest choice for me was to start reading episode 8. Episode 7 gives you an answer to the mystery, and then Bernkastel hits you with the truth that the story will not have a happy ending. In some ways it ties into the whole nature of belief, by not finishing the story, those characters that I care for will never reach that unhappy ending. Out of every work of fiction, Umineko is the only one which has changed my thinking immediately, and in a way I can directly attribute it to the work. Also, the soundtrack's a banger.
