Umpire looked like he lost the count and unsure on how many balls after the ball in the dirt. When the catcher and batter didn't move after what would have been ball 4, he just assumed it must have only been ball 3. Hard to see how 3 of the most important people in the game all lost the count at the same time, without any major event or delay during the at bat, but they clearly did.

3:15 CB is in the correct position. It is called the Slot Position and while its not great for seeing outside pitches it does take your head out of the firing lane for foul balls. That position is textbook and taught to brand new umpires.
@Libertarian_Neighbor
@Libertarian_Neighbor Жыл бұрын
It’s actually so you can see the low and outside pitch. Otherwise it would be obscured by the catcher’s head. The whole purpose of the slot is to ensure you can see the outside corner. You you position your head and eyes for that pitch and try to keep your head still.

In defense, umpires are taught to set up “in the slot” to avoid the ball fouled straight back hitting them in the face; they call the area directly behind the catcher the “dead zone.” His problem may be the fact that he is too far behind the catcher the closer you are to him, the better you can see that corner away.
@sam.houseworth
@sam.houseworth Жыл бұрын
This. If you set up right over the catcher, then you lose sight of the low pitches. And at lower levels where they don't have the K Zone for tv audiences, you'll get more crap for missing pitches at the knees than pitches on the outside edge.

As an umpire, you’re supposed to set up inside which is called the “slot,” where you set up right over the catcher’s shoulder. CB sets up way too high which causes the catcher’s head to block the outside corner. However, if he were to be lower, he’d be able to see the outside corner perfectly well.

Hell, I’ve had hitters ask me the count after a pickoff move… when a pitch has yet to be thrown… same with a catcher.. we all lose a pitch every so often.. though in this case, not sure how CB could have lost one.. usually you have something that distracts… no runners no passed balls.. no fouls.. I don’t see anything to distract.. again, hitters and fielders can forget before they even see a pitch.. umps don’t often do that.. but we do all have days where we just need to take a day off…

Next time you are ready to judge someone based on eyewitness testimony, remember this video. There are essentially 4 people involved in this situation that should have realized that last pitch was ball 4 and none of them had any clue. And even after stopping the game to figure it out, they still looked confused. To be honest, I half-expected the umps to say that this type of scenario is not reviewable. For some reason the MLB seems to prohibit Replay Review in scenarios where replay could provide the most crucial evidence and guarantee the correct call being made.

When you are behind the plate all day it is very easy to lose track of things, that's why we have an indicator. If your number on it gets ahead or behind then 99% of the time you can kinda low key just read the reaction of the catcher and batter because they will normally react accordingly. I have had times in HS baseball officiating that I couldn't tell you what inning it was, what the score was, or even which team was home or guests lol

In regards to umpire setting up in the "slot" Its hard to place an umpire right over the catcher's head and make him call strikes and balls consistently due to 2 reasons. 1) To give an umpire an unimpeded view of the plate and ball throughout its entire travel. 2) To allow catcher's to move freely without getting interfered by umpire. In a perfect world, we would put an umpire right behind where the catcher's head is, but that's just impossible to do without the above mentioned problem.
@simplysteve68
@simplysteve68 Жыл бұрын
That's when you need a catcher bodycam, plus one overhead cam looking down from a high enough point, over homeplate, that it won't get struck by stray fly/foul balls, and 2 side cams, on opposite sides (depending on which side of the plate the batter is) of the plate. Then and only then, will we get truly accurate calls, with video evidence! Because the outfield wall cam, always showing the view from off to the right of pitcher's mound (regardless of whether pitcher is a righty or lefty), is and always has been a bad angle, but can't project through the pitcher, so what else can you do to improve it, besides what has been suggested? 🤷

I was wondering about that. I'm a soccer referee, and it's standard practice in a 3-man crew for one of the linesmen to be the backup timekeeper while the other is the backup on keeping the score. That's not an incompetence thing, of course, just taking into consideration that we're all human, with lots of other crap going on in our heads, so have two people track it independently so that you can get it right. Absolutely absurd that out of the three other umps, nobody else has a little count clicker. Is the 3B ump really THAT busy that he can't take on that extra duty?

@GregMcNeish
@GregMcNeish Жыл бұрын
@@Not_a_smart_man I'm Canadian, so I assume the linesman terminology for ARs is just part of our hockey-dominated culture, haha. I get fewer confused looks from non-soccer people when saying linesman, so that's my default unless I know that they know the proper terms. And yes, it is everyone's responsibility. I'm an entry level referee, working recreational and low-level competitive youth leagues in a rural area. I'm one of the few experienced referees with the local club, with the vast, vast majority of the officials being teenagers who sign up for a couple years then move on. So, it's really just a simplification in delegated activities to let each AR focus on a different portion of the backups. Gives them a sense of ownership of the task, as well. It's a kid-friendly adaptation, I guess you could say. That's what I was thinking about when I wrote my comment, as sort of an off-hand remark. I shouldn't have stated it as if that's standard practice. I do work matches as AR in the next level higher of competition (still low-level, as I have no desire to go up in levels), and for those games we all take on the full workload of time and record keeping. That just wasn't what came to mind in the moment. Thank you for calling me out on that. I don't want to be the cause of misinformation.

Love the analysis and have to agree that Buckner misses way more pitches than he should, but as a 20-year veteran high school and NCAA umpire who also trains other umpires, I have to disagree with your assessment of his head position. It's called being "in the slot," and it's where 99% of umpires from MLB on down set up. (They're all supposed to, but as with any profession, there are a few knuckleheads.) There is no perfect view of the plate -- it's certainly not directly behind the catcher for multiple reasons -- so we have to get the best angle we can, which is between the catcher and the batter. To your point, though, it does mean the outside corner of the plate is harder to see. It's a skill every umpire has to work on.

Exactly. The whole purpose of the slot is to be able to see the low strikes and the outside corner. You’d be guessing 100% of the time if you were behind the catcher.

You gotta do a breakdown of what just happened in the Ashes. Would be interested in outsiders perspective.

There was a crazy double play in today’s Cubs-Brewers game that needs a breakdown. Brewers had a runner on second with a tie game in the bottom of the 10th with one out. Owen Miller singled to left and your buddy Ian Happ threw Andruw Monesterio out at the plate and Miguel Amaya threw to second to get Miller. The Brewers challenged both plays and both calls were upheld

I could see a batter not concentrating on the number of balls but his strike count. So he knew he had 2 strikes and if the ump calls out 2-2, I could see the batter not running through the pitches to be like “isn’t it 3-2?”. And if you’re the catcher, why not take that 2-2 count? Have you ever felt like you’ve fallen asleep for a moment, but when you wake up, no one seems to have noticed so you think maybe you didn’t fall asleep? I’m pretty sure the ump fell asleep during one of the pitches and that’s why he was one behind.
