A a UN judge at the International Court of Justice has said that Britain must pay £18 TRILLION in reparations for slavery. Historian Rafe Heydel-Mankoo joined GB News to debate this story, where he pointed out that -- contrary to the way in which this has been reported -- this is not a court ruling but, rather, the opinion of a man who, when he is not a judge, is a prominent Jamaican-born reparations activist.
Rafe says Britain has no legal or moral obligation to pay reparations as it already paid any such debt through its historic efforts to liberate slaves and enforce an end to the slave trade. British tax payers do not owe any reparations.

Buying a slave's freedom, I.e compensating the then locally recognised property owner, was in itself the compensation. The slave trade existed in parts of the Caribbean even before the British took control of parts of it. The central charge of wrongdoing seems based on the notion that Britain was not imperialist enough to stamp out existing slavery as and when it won new territories from other empires, but with whom should I compare that against to reach such a conclusion ? The anti-slavery crusade was itself an act of imperialism. Britain had no legal right at the time to police the seas or put economic or military pressure on other countries to stop the age old human trade of slavery. The irony I find in all this is that it was only comparatively recently that you could hear a socialists stating 'There is never an excuse for imperialism' yet without it I do wonder how large parts of the world would have been persuaded to end the age old human practice of slavery. I can't think of any off hand.

My mum was a single mother of 3 who struggled to put herself through university to become a mental health nurse, she has worked hard for around 35 years and managed to purchase a home so why should she be forced to pay reparations to people today who aren't slaves and when our family never owned slaves? People today are just lazy and want handouts rather than working hard for a living. Britain transported the slaves but they never captured them, surely if reps are going to be paid it should be from the people who actually enslaved them? Slavery existed in Africa before the Europeans came and it was Britain that put a stop to most of the legal slave trade in the world and as a thank you from the other countries their people demand money. Three cultures persisted in slavery after the advent of the Industrial Revolution: the Antebellum South, the Iberian Peninsula, (Spain and Portugal) and the Muslim dominated regions of North Africa and the Middle East. All three met identical fates: stagnation, decline, and ultimate collapse from which they never fully recovered. Southern states still lag behind their Northern neighbors in several key metrics, Spain and Portugal remain Western Europe's poor relations to this day, and North Africa and the Middle East aren't famous for industrial or economic might. A slave based economy is notoriously archaic and inefficient and cannot hope to compete with an industrial economy.

@@suzannechapman4302 where do you think the Provisional IRA came from? When did they originate and why? Do you think some bored teenagers hanging around a street corner had nothing else to do so they decided to attack the British army for the fun of it? First of all the IRA was and is the official army of Ireland (airm phoblacht na hEirinn). What you are talking about is the provisional IRA. After 1922 partition a faction of anti-treaty military broke away in protest and defiance of continued British occupation and brutality in Northern Ireland. However they had no military strength and were mainly political. In the late sixties the catholic minority had suffered enough apartheid and peacefully protested for equal rights. The Protestant community saw this as a threat and started ethnic cleansing and killing random catholics. The British army was brought in to PROTECT the catholics, and they were welcomed by the catholics, but it didn’t take long to show their true intentions and soldiers started killing innocent civilians as well. The southern Irish government was powerless militarily and too dependent on British trade to retaliate and at best took in refugees. This is when the provisional IRA was formed. It was a matter of survival against a growing genocide. They got arms from America and secretly from Irish politicians and nationalists. So this civilian militia returned the brutality they received and protected their communities. The provo IRA would never have existed if the catholics had been treated equal to the rest of the British citizens that they were forced to become down the barrel of a gun.

@@giuliakhawaja7929 that’s absolutely laughable. Black slavers were tribal or regional small kingdoms for the most part. Britain was the biggest empire the world has ever seen. It was done on an organised industrial scale with a worldwide distribution. To suggest that Africans should somehow be grateful for being ruled by a more advanced society that made them wealthy is a bad reflection on your own moral standards. There are boatloads of people dying trying to cross the channel. Are they trying to escape their own vast wealth bestowed on them by the British? They don’t have a pot to piss in. Like most British you seem to be afflicted with historical amnesia, historical distortion and an inability to accept your own history. At least the Germans had the honour to admit their horrendous atrocities.

@@briankelleher2156Why did so many of the newly independent colonies choose to join the Commonwealth? Could it be because the native populations of British colonies consistently enjoy a higher standard of living than other native populations and wanted to keep a good thing going? Grow a pair and admit that the world has always been a brutal place, and the actions of the BE compare well when put in a real world historical context. Despite its many failings in being a fallible institution conceived, developed, and implemented by fallible human beings, on net balance the Empire was a force for good which contributed much to humanity's advancement.

Why are they not going after his children and grandchildren? Africans just do not want to accept that their own people were slave traders and owners. Learn to move forward. This stops when you start teaching the young generation of this country the true dark history of colonialism and pervasive racism. What looting, murder and genocide happened in the name of empire should be told to young generation. That's when these calls of reparations will stop. Germany truly continues to wash it's dark blemish of fascism by continuously teaching it's young generation of the horrors of nazism. Zero such effort is happening in this country at both the level of the society and administration to teach about colonialism. People start defending the empire when a discussion of colonialism is started. This is truly shameful for society.

Let's pay £1 trillion in reparations. This would be around £100k given to every non-white person in the UK. The only condition is they relinquish their citizenship and go live in an ancestral country of their choice. £1 trillion sounds a lot, but if we spread it over 10 years, it would only be 10% of the government's income per year. It would mean a huge influx of wealth into those poor countries and an influx of people who have been exposed to Western values. The non-white people leaving the UK will no longer have to endure the racism they're evidently facing. So everybody wins. 50% of non-white households are on benefits: that would be a saving of £46 billion per year. That saving alone would (over the 10 years) pay around half the total cost of £1 trillion.

Here’s an answer: the UK taxpayers over many years/decades/generations have paid the debt to the slave owners to secure slaves freedom. Why can’t the UK government give a genuine and final apology and then pass the list of slave owners (to whom we paid the debt) and tell the people/countries who insist on reparations to follow up directly with the actual slave owners’ descendants to sort out any financial compensation?

That shows how little you actually know. Your next door neighbour, Ireland, has been brutalised right up to the good Friday agreement in 1998. There are plenty of survivors today who have suffered war crimes from the British army. There was apartheid, ethnic cleansing, torture, shoot to kill policy, internment ( which is indefinite prison without charge, legal representation or trial), massacres of unarmed peaceful protesters and collusion with loyalist paramilitaries to kill civilians by the British government. This history isn’t taught in English schools because it’s shameful and would spoil the deluded image you have of yourselves. At least the Germans had the honesty and honour to to admit to the horrendous crimes they committed. The British can’t find the courage to do the same.
