This week I got to witness a once in a lifetime phenomenon, bioluminescent algae appeared in the ocean and beaches in California. We heard about it and ran down to Venice beach, when we arrived this is what we saw! I had to jump in the sea it was glowing all around me, I literally felt like I was in Avatar! One of the most magical experiences of my life!

This is absolutely incredible. Could you imagine someone experiencing this hundreds of years ago with no understanding of what this is and how it is possible. It would seem divine. I know and understand this and it STILL blows my damn mind. Such a marvelous gift from nature.

This happened in 2005 in SoCal. The cameras couldn't pick it up back then. Which was exasperating trying to explain it without footage. This might be the most decent footage you can find, Louis. Well done. It looks more intense this time around, too. Brighter. They just light up with any friction. Glad you guys got to swim in it. I did in 2005.

I was in San Diego for that. Walking the boardwalk, and we heard some drunk guy stomping on the sand yelling "Blue water!" Sure enough it was lighting up blue. One of the most incredible things I've seen. This video captures it so well.

I once saw this phenomenon on a deserted island on the coast of Cambodia. It was truly magical. On the night of my 19th birthday I swam in the sea with some kind strangers. There was no electricity on the island so it was completely dark apart from the moon and our body’s that lit up because of the bioluminescent algae. One of my best memories.

This phenomenon is a biological reaction of algae in response to pollution from excess phosphorus, which often originates from wastewater. The excess phosphorus that is present in the human body is excreted through urine. When the algae are exposed to this high concentration of phosphorus, they become bioluminescent, creating the magical glow that we see in the water. Rather than disposing of wastewater into the sea, it may be necessary to reevaluate the wastewater treatment processes in these areas. This would help to reduce the amount of phosphorus that is released into the environment, and prevent the occurrence of this bioluminescent phenomenon. Considering the source of this magical glow, it begs the question - would you still want to swim in this water? It is important to consider the potential health and environmental risks associated with swimming in water contaminated with excess phosphorus and other pollutants.
