We go on a huge adventure to collect the antiques that we bought for the chateau back in 2021 and 22, and discover lots about French antiques along the way 🏰
To explore the incredible Maison James, visit Marche Vernaison, 99 rue des Rosiers, Saint Ouen, Allee no 1, Stand 49-51 or email maisonjames.didier@free.fr
As we've had a sad week at the chateau, I haven't felt up to doing much filming or editing. Luckily I had the footage of our road trip from last week, and I was going to include more Lalande life in the second half, but no-one here has been in the mood for filming. I promise there'll be more Lalande life next week ❤️
The Chateau Diaries Episode 372 ✨🏰✨
Escape to the chateau with 'The Chateau Diaries' 🏰
This channel follows the adventures of chatelaine Stephanie in her French 16th century home, the Chateau de Lalande, in the heart of rural France ❤️
We share our life in this ancient chateau in the heart of the French countryside, and show you the diy, renovations, crafts, cooking and gardening that are needed to bring a home like this to life!
A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. You have made The Chateau Diaries one of the top 400 Patreon accounts in the world, and have transformed not only our lives here, but the future of this beautiful chateau! I'm overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity. On behalf of this beautiful chateau that will continue to survive and flourish because of you, thank you!!!

True story: while backpacking through France after college, my friend and I went to Blois to see chateaux. We didn’t have enough $ to take a tour, or even get out of town and to the castle, so we walked around the town, enjoying the village and those lovely stuccoed houses you saw in this video. We stopped to take a photo of a particularly winsome cat, sunning himself on a deep windowsill, complete with a pot of red geraniums. Then the magic thing happened: the homeowners came out, introduced themselves, invited us into their home, fed us sandwiches (very French sandwiches), and showed us a movie of the chateaux of the Loire Valley. This was in the olden days before the days of KZfaq, so this included propping a projector on the kitchen table, opening the white enamel lid on their stove, and running the film in their kitchen theater. (This whole exchange is taking place in French, of which I had a high-school command.) THEN, they bundled us into their little car and drove us to Chateau Blois, where we wandered the grounds and reveled in the hospitality of this kind family. It was a lesson in so many ways: we learned not to take on face value the reputation of the French people as unwelcoming. Indeed, they showed us the meaning of hospitality and kindness. ❤️🇫🇷

I think that reputation is of Parisians not the French. Like New Yorkers have a different mentality to Americans in general in regards to visitors. What a fantastic story and experience you had! I similarly found that travelling back in the days before the internet took over involved fantastic gestures from locals met spontaneously irl creating so many wonderful memories ❤️

Gnarbel Jo! Yes. It is the unfortunate reputation of the Parisians, not necessarily of the rest of the country.

What a haul, in every good sense of the word. Each antique is impressive and smartly chosen. On my antique meter reader, I’d say my peak responses came on sight of the Givenchy secretaire, in part because of its provenance but mostly because of its remarkable beauty…. And then followed by the four antique chairs with their incredible fabric material and colors. The roll-top desk and commode are standouts for looks, quality craftmanship and function. Well done! I’m also thinking that Philip’s ‘Portrait of a Duck’ artwork, in honor of its stalwart avian subject, could be suitably subtitled ‘Country Quackers’. By the way, I found a hippo bar advertised online for about $35,000 though its admittedly less impressive than the Sotheby’s life size hippo bar and only has a dry bar portion that opens at center top. The rhino version is only $29,600. They're also not of metal but goatskin parchment instead. I’d order it and send it over for a Chateau Unwrapped gift but I’m sure the postage cost would be staggering. Then there’s the cost of French customs you’d have to pay on delivery which would be around $7,000-8,000. That’s because French customs charges 20% on the combined stated value of the merchandise plus postage costs!! Now that’s really a whole other kind of quackers! P.S: Always great to see the delightful Pavlina as well as the returning creative genius, Jared.

I used to visit Saint Ouen frequently before I retired as a flight attendant from Delta Air Lines. You are right by La Chope des Puce, home of Django Reinhardt the great Gypsy jazz guitarist of the 1930s and 1940s. Authentic live music on the weekends that I used to never miss. I was always the only American there, which I loved because it made me feel like a true Parisian. ❤️

How is the grand salon doing? Has the structural damage issue been resolved and if so, how? If not, when? The furniture purchases are wonderful! I especially like the 4 chair set. Such a beautiful and joyous color! Steph loving yellow, this is the perfect set for her study. I can just imagine it across from the settee with a small, wooden inlaid coffee table with a blue and white tea set at the ready, scones, jam and clotted cream and... oh yes, 1 freshly cooked asparagus spear. 😊

Here’s a tip. To measure furniture ‘in the wild’ learn what your handspan measures (thumb tip to pinky tip with fingers as wide as possible) and what your wingspan measurement is. (fingertip to finger tip with arms extended) Then whenever you want to check the size of a bed, or desk, you always have something to measure with. For me, I can always quickly check whether something is less or more than 69” / 175 cm wide or what multiple of 9” / 23 cm it is. Bonne chance!

Mssr. James, your collection is lovely. I inherited my great grandparents bed, but it was too short even for me at 162.5 cm. I did finally sell it to a collector. French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface, with a deep colour and chatoyancy. French polishing consists of applying many thin coats of shellac dissolved in denatured alcohol using a rubbing pad lubricated with one of a variety of oils.
