They were actually made until the late1970s. My P1 is dated 1978. I have the later 'fat slide' version with the 'hex bolt' reinforcement. It came straight out of Bundeswehr stock in the original heat sealed plastic bag, with anti-rust paper wrapping, and 1 magazine.

I bought a brand new P38 (P1) in 1969. It was a cool gun, but only functioned reliably with full metal jacket bullets. Any JHP it was a jamomatic.

Test for the recoil springs is how well does the gun shoot. If the slide comes back with a bang, in an uncontrolled manner and may well not return to battery correctly, then the springs have crept and should be replaced. Mine (AC41) had 40-year-old springs and did just that; changed springs, and it was like new. Guess it's about time for another set of springs...

Why the hell can't every importer put the mark in the same spot or similar hidden spot...this is how they should be.

Totally agree. That's probably the best import mark I've ever seen.
@Toolness1

They get real lazy, it's way easier to clamp the gun and billboard the thing but some importers make the effort to hide it. Even RTI puts it on the underside of the barrel so the people doing billboards don't have much of an excuse.

I now feel old. I wont say what I paid for one "back in the day." I traded my post war P38 off when I got a war time one. The P38 is an awesome pistol, very similar to the latter Berreta 92. The best thing about the post war version is that they make great shooters. You don't have to worry about damaging an original war time version. Those are now crazy expensive.

I can only guess its a time/money thing with import markings. When they were bringing them in by the thousands it was easier to billboard them after atf decided the underside of the barrel was too easy to remove by swapping out the barrel. Now with smaller batches of surplus and collectors demanding less obvious markings its practical What gets me is they could have been doing it this way all along as i have a Luger impoted by RBI of Miami in 1989 with their mark placed on the bottom of the reciever extension. Youd never know it was there unless you take it apart.

Very nice! I just bought one myself, mine is made in 1972. I used to have an original "nazi" P-38, but some stupid idiot stole it a few years ago...So I bought a postwar P-38 because I can't find or afford another WW2 one. I put original WW2 bakelite grips on it though, to make it look more like a WW2 one.

Probably made between 1957 and 1963. Manufacture stamp should be on right side of slide above trigger - mine is a 2/59 designation-meaning Feb. 1959. The serrations on the slide stopping at the safety lever indicate a post war make from '57 - '63. Then they made a reinforced slide that has serrations going an inch past the safety lever from '63 onward.

Hi -Please help, I’m a newbie to P38. I picked up a pair last week. One of them had a bad decocker switch. Decocker switch works fine when slide is locked/closed and in battery. Once the Hammer is cocked, The decocker stuck halfway: it does not go any further or down to safe to drop the hammer. Trigger still fire at halfway decocked. When the slide are locked back, decocker can be switch to Safe or Fire. The 2nd P38 decocker works smoothly and as it’s intended. Thanks in advance.

Mine is like that. As far as I can tell, there's a cam on the shaft of the decocker that presses a lever down to trip the sear AFTER the safety is applied and hammer block is protecting the firing pin, but there's a mismatch with angles on some of the parts, so the push forward on the sear becomes a push downwards - and that doesn't release anything.

Did you just say they were going to be selling c &r licenses in the future
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector 7 ай бұрын
No sir, at that time I filmed it, I was saying if you had a C&R license you could get these direct from Century Arms, but if not you could get P38s like this from Centerfire Systems and Atlantic Firearms. I was basically saying Century Arms wouldn't sell this direct to a non-licensee.

Is $629.99 too much for this gun in "very good" condition?
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector Жыл бұрын
I think it could be. The reason I say that is because if you have a C&R license, you can get them for $589 directly from Century Arms...Now if it was a WWII P38 sure, but it's really hard to say for a post war one made in the 60s.

We paid too much for this. CFS rated this as "good" condition, I'd rate it fair. As you can see, the trigger guard is all banged up on both sides. The right grip on mine has worn down to smooth without any checkering. Under the trigger guard on mine has fair amount of pitting on the aluminum. I'll never buy from them again.
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with yours. I just did some digging and all I can figure is their "good" must be what Century Arms graded them as...from their own website, the good condition is "Good: 50% blue remaining, stocks marred (several dings in wood) bores slightly worn and dark, no corrosion that will interfere with proper functioning. Complete and in working condition."
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector Жыл бұрын
So I say all that to say CAI's "good" grading probably is more "fair"
@rustynail246
@rustynail246 Жыл бұрын
@@The_Casual_Collector What's their "fair" then?
@The_Casual_Collector
@The_Casual_Collector Жыл бұрын
@rustynail246 so "fair" according to CAI is as follows "Fair: Very little, if any, blue remaining. Rough bores unless otherwise indicated, wood heavily marred. ~May require adjustment or replacement of parts. Metal can be pitted. Must be inspected by a competent gunsmith prior to shooting. Failure to do so may result in bo dily injury or property damage" I think in this case Centerfire should have stated whos grading policy they were using.
@rustynail246
@rustynail246 Жыл бұрын
@@The_Casual_Collector That sounds more like "junk" to me. Mine has some pitting under the trigger guard but nowhere else, looks kind of like yours, nothing's missing. I think "good" supposed to be cosmetically and operationally sound, not just "OK".
