The "Sheep to Shawl" contest at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January each year is fun to watch. Seven-person teams go from shearing sheep to final woven shawls in a matter of hours.

Hi, I started spinning when I was 32, I used a home made spindle of a wooden dowel stuck into a potato. I then went to a store in downtown Mpls and bought a wooden spindle similar to yours. Using the spindle taught me how to draft. I had Suffolk sheep and after the sheep shearer finished shearing my sheep I had to learn to spin that wool. Later on I bought Corriedale sheep. The Suffolk wool spun and made a bouncy yarn. Oh my, my yarn was think and thin. The drop spindle dropped on my toes, but after practice I learned to spin. I joined the local Shepard's in my community spinners group. I bought an Ashford spinning wheel. A kit. Life got in the way and I sold my wheel and moved to Florida. Now that I am 72, I wanted to spin my own yarns again. I've had my spindle cuz it's easy to store than a wheel. You can do it Jennifer. My very first yarn was the best yarn I ever made. Knitting it into a scarf was wonderful because I created it from sheep to shawl, or scarf. I'm saving up for another wheel. But I love my spindle. Enjoy and happy spinning. Love your channel. I've been spinning for about 25 years, and I've tried just about every preparation out there (including washing fresh fleece and carding it). My favorite preparation is combed top. It drafts much more smoothly than either roving or batts. The yarn you want to create is called rough spun or rustic spun. Be forewarned. Spinning is as addictive as all the other fiber arts. But it's also the most zen of the fiber arts. Don't be afraid of diving down the rabbit hole. It's awesome. If you want, I will be happy to share fiber sources. One last thing - if you can get some Bluefsced Leicester (aka BFL), do it. I actually prefer it to Merino. Also Falkland and Finn and Gotland. I'm so glad to know that you're ambidextrous. It will make learning spinning a lot easier. Go with whichever is more comfortable. Just make sure that you spin in the same direction with both hands. If you ply two strands together, it will be done in the opposite direction to get it to hold together. I'm so excited for you.

I've been spinning for 25 years. That's not a bad price for the kit. Spindle looks like the right weight for spinning. The top is expensive by itself. I've never been good spinning on a spindle. I have a few spinning wheels. Good luck on your journey to spinning. It will give you all new appreciation for the beautiful yarn you use. You'll know how the fiber is made into the yarn. I feel like I need to thank you for sharing your experiences and journey with us. This is completely unrelated to today’s video but thank you for sharing how your hands reacted to hand sanitizer it helped me to figure out what was going on with my 6 year old. She was having issues every time she was using hand sanitizer.

Everything is beautiful you get what you pay for. You didn’t have to travel EVERYTHING is nice neat and available all at once. Someone had to include a picking and packing fee. A couple tips (not that you asked😏) pre-drafting is your friend, park and draft method saved me when I was learning, and save the bamboo blend until you are a little more comfortable (it's a slippery fiber). When I was 10 yrs old I told my mom I was suppose to be born in the Little House in the Prairie time. That year for my Birthday I got my Ashford spinning wheel and spinning lessons. The lessons included learning how to make dye from crushed flowers and vegetables and dying the wool. I also made my own drop spindle from a chop stick and cardboard...I still have both the spinning wheel and the drop spindle 🥰

Have a wonderful day. You could never fall into a deep, dark well. You will get this spindle hobby cause you're very creative. I have seen people using a spindle, and I would love to learn. Finally, someone who reads directions and does research before they use something. My neighbors purchased something and then asked me how to use the item. When I ask for the directions, they respond with, "I threw them away." Once you get the hang of the spindle, you will be saving money. You can do this. We all have confidence in you. I hope that a local yarn shop can assist you with your new spindle hobby.

I was watching a video from a British crocheter, I think her KZfaq name is Craft and Cuppa, and she was using a drop spindle. I think she was just learning as well and she was using the left over bits of yarn she had. I’m assuming it would have to be actual wool and not acrylic when she was making it this way, but could be wrong. But when she got one piece in, she just grabbed another bit from her scrap container and on she went. It was actually quite fascinating to watch her. Good luck on your new hobby.

Yes you have fallen down a rabbit hole. I went to a spinning class with my sister. I said I wasn’t interested. Yeah that was a load of malarkey. I left class with a spindle and fiber. Just remember don’t give up. I can sometimes spin awesome. Other times I suck. The price you paid for all you got was great. Jillian Eve is awesome. I love Chevy Rell she is awesome. Just keep learning. Pre drafting is the best for beginners. There is a book called Respect the Spindle. The best information. Oh yeah. Welcome to the world of spinning.

I just started too and I spin with my hand and just pinch the fiber then I draft the fiber. It's called park and draft. But, I am just trying the leg spin. So many great videos. So far spinning is very relaxing😊

The drop spindle spinning looks like fun! It's been something ive had in the back of my mind to try. I'm anxious to see how it works out for you!! Okay, you might laugh...i got a little tea set for my granddaughter for this last Christmas and it came in a little suitcase like that, only with horsies on it.😊. Btw, I've seen some kind of roving fiber at Hobby Lobby. I've watched a video on Fiber Spider's site where he demonstrated how to use a drop spindle. After watching it, i wanted to try it.

If it gives you joy, it’s worth what you paid for it. As for spinning, you’re going to be awful when you start but don’t let it discourage you. You will get better with practice. I speak from experience.

I love that this is some thing you are interested in. I have been interested in spending with a job spindle for months now and have been too afraid to try. So we’ll make a pact I’ll try if you try. There is a place where you can go for classes just within a half an hour from my home in Pennsylvania And you can do daily classes or spend a week there. That is top on my list. You're learning something a bit new! I think it's wonderful. We'll be waiting for updates :) (no pressure) You know, I have a granddaughter who is predominantly left-handed.....however....there are some things she does with her right hand. She's a right-handed archer. The surprising thing is....she uses a right-handed computer mouse but points the mouse, not at the computer but, to her left. I say, anything that works....you do you :)

You can do anything my dear. If the fibres catch your throat use a face mask for a while whilst you sre learning. I have to wear one with fluffy or mohair type yarns or they affect my asthma. I never thought I would find a use for my box of masks from covid. 🤣🤣🤣

Looks awesome, Love the kit. I was wanting to try it and looking at the costs of spinning wheels, so expensive. The spindle is a good option but I'm not sure I could do it, I haven't tried it yet :) Good for you! I recently bought Tunisian hooks to try, but much of it is like knitting so it will take me a while, I am not good with diagrams. I did get a little book and the symbols are much different than crochet. It seems like half knit, and half crochet. I did try knitting and taught myself kind of backwards but everything looked ok, I tried again but my gauge and tension was off because I was trying to do it the correct way on long needles, I think it might be easier to work with the round ones with smaller needles and the line in-between. ie circular. Thats going to be interesting to see if I can do that too :) I'm looking forward to your adventure :)

I have anxiety and fear of trying new things why I have no clue I didn’t realize I had anxiety problems like fainting at a market basket one time I get really warm and I pass out or I get fidgety I finally made an amigurumi bee I’ve made heart pillows my Pokémon ball and in the process of making a Pikachu that goes inside the pokeball I made then I want to make a spring and summer top thank you for giving me confidence to crochet Outside the box I also like how you talk about family and what’s going on in your life you are I like how people can relate with you on having anxiety and diabetes I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2011 So I’ve been on the roller coaster ride now my a1c Is 6.9 I’m wanting my endocrinologist wants my numbers lower and I’m trying I probably said to much but I don’t have friends that close I talk to my dogs and cats lol anyway much love from my family to yours❤
