Being new to the hobby, I find one of the most esoteric and unique aspects of wargames to be these publisher magazines. They’re like game potpourri. There’ll be an unboxed game, seemingly often forgettable (tho I’m sure some gems exist) along with articles, rules revisions, even new components, for a seemingly random assortment of separate extant or upcoming games. I now own seven gutted magazines, gutted by me, because bits of them put together make one sprawling grand strategy wwii title I wanted (plus an unrelated, boxed but decidedly non-sprawling wwii German-invasion-of-France game which I didn’t). I know at least a handful of my games have errata counters or expansion components that I’d need to research and source the right mag to get. Hell, I am even now bidding on Ebay for a random magazine issue because it has some expansion bits for the beginning of a game I’m trying to learn, Absolute Victory, inside (barely mentioned on the cover). I’ll probably never touch the Mongol game the mag contains. I really want to go through my collection and find out what else has extra bits, strategies, errata etc, out there for completionism’s sake, but idk of an easy yet thorough method given the varying publishers. I’m not complaining. Just noting a funny aspect I didn’t expect when I started this hobby.

Mark Herman. His collaboration with Berg was epic. RIP Richard, loved the games. GMT sure has come a long way since the late '90's.

For me it's more worth it for the games that the magazine supports than for the games themselves. Although several of those games stand up very well.
