Does everyone in Maine eat lobster?
Does everyone in Maine have a funny accent?
And is everyone in Maine sick of the tourists?
Wow we’re out here in no man’s land. We could be anywhere. But of course, we know we’re in Maine, because that’s what this video is all about. There aren’t a lot of people in these parts. Maine is the only state in the nation with just one border. This state shares a long border with New Hampshire, but that’s it. It’s actually a much bigger state than you might think - you can fit the other New England states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island into Maine.
Maine has the lowest population density of any state east of the Mississippi. There’s a million people here, but most people are south of where we are. But more on that later.
To get a complete understanding of Maine, we need to look at it from a higher level and then explore each region.
This is Maine.
As you can see, there are large areas in the northern part of Maine where things are vast and wide open, and then, closer to the coast and to the south, there’s a lot more going on. But for the people in northern Maine, there’s plenty enough going on. They have everything they need, thank you very much.
We’ll begin over here in the northwest part of Maine. Way up here is really nothing. Outside of Moosehead Lake and It’s woods and a lot of rundown cabins. No that’s mean. There are some teeny tiny little villages with a smattering of folks out here tucked way back into tracts of forest, places that are just about as rural as you’ll find in almost anywhere in the country.
Maine claims to have more woods than any other state. 89% of the state is woods. That’s probably why it got the nickname The Pine Tree State. You could drive back here for three or four hours and hardly see a soul. That’s also why a majority of people in Maine drive Trucks and SUVs and Subarus.
Most of this region is made up of Piscataquis County, which is losing more people than any other county in the state. This county lost 6% of its population over the last decade. Why? Mostly an aging population, more deaths than births, and a loss of net migration. In fact Maine now has the oldest average population of any state in the country.
There’s plenty of places to ski on this side of the state. In the middle of this vast region is Mount Katahdin. While New Hampshire’s Mount Washington may be the called the “Beast of the East,” Mount Katahdin is the largest independent mountain with the most rugged terrain in the Northeast. Crazy people trek up here and cross country ski here. It’s also where the Appalachian Trail begins - or ends - depending on which way you’re going.
Down here in Somerset and Franklin Counties it’s more woods and skiing.

I could help you out on further videos concerning Moving to Maine. French culture is Quite rich up here in Aroostook County which America Seized From Canada or Should I say the British in the Pork & Beans War aka the Aroostook County War there was a time when this northern border wasn't well defined and the local lumber jacks went to swinging axes about it & then a US federal agent was killed in New Brunswick Canada the US assembled troops & a Fort but the British didn't Concur with any interest in War so the USA Kept Aroostook County the biggest county east of the Rocky mountains

I'm so excited you mentioned the Desert of Maine! Fun fact: it became desert because of excessive potato farming. There's a restaurant in Portland called Governor's where I once had a wicked awesome blueberry milkshake which was clearly made with local blueberries (which are actually little blueberries, not like the ones you'd typically get at the supermarket). As to the whole "we're not Canada" thing, I still remember a time when one of my suitemates from graduate school, a guy from Montreal, gave me a lift to Vermont on his way back home. He commented, "Yeah, this looks just like Canada!" Great video, Nick!

Just FYI (for those who care), the state tree of the Pine Tree State is specifically the White Pine. That is significant because that's what the (British) Royal Navy used for the main masts of its sailing ships back in the day, with the White Pine being the tallest tree in the Northeast (over 100' tall). Mature trees can easily be 200 to 250 years old. Some white pines live over 400 years.

Grew up in central Maine not on welfare, but in a trailer on a half acre surrounded by farm land. Think you missed the mark on this section. It’s definitely poor, hard working folk who really struggle to survive. Maines biggest problem is the economy. No jobs and no housing (if you don’t want to live in a run down drug den or with your parents). I left for college and moved to a city far away where I can make enough money to live.., I miss Maine and it’s mountains every day.

I lived in Scarborough for 10 years, loved Maine, came to Pa and the part of the state I live in has been invaded by New York City dwellers and people from NJ fleeing their high property taxes. They come here, traffic increased, school taxes increased, green space is disappearing, wildlife are being pushed out of their habitats and home prices in my neighborhood start at around $300,000. Don’t let that happen to your beautiful state, but I don’t know how you can stop it from happening especially in southern Maine.

@Believe on Jesus Christ for Eternal Life Well, thanks. Honestly I wished I'd lived in more spots but I tend to get comfortable and forget my aspirations.

@Believe on Jesus Christ for Eternal Life Right. Highly unlikely but not out of the question. I'm in Albany. I like the valley weather a little better than the coast. The fires back in September were pretty bad but that doesn't happen usually. The air was so think with smoke!

@@NickJohnson 🤔...uh, ...to live, I don't know about that, but I have family there so maybe for some time. ...there's still a lot of places I'd still like to try. ...with this COVID thing right now it's all a little limiting though. Thanks.

Someone needs to petition for "We're A Real State, We're Not Canada" to be Maine's new state song

No real Mainers want the song to be “we’re fine, leave us alone, stay where you are flatlanders“

I lived for many years in Rchmond ME (Pretty Coastal Area). Worked in Brunswick. Loved it all. Don't forget it gets COLD and the beautiful reds and golds are replaced with gray

Its changed...the ppl have changed...no more smiles....no more manners... everyone is struggling & freezing to death. Power outages happen very often....its like living in the 1950s. I'd rather be stuck in Canada than this lousy place! I cant even get a pizza delivered! And I'm in a suburban area!
