Rainbowmealworms is a great feeder insect supplier. I've been buying from them for 4 years and have never had a problem. They are also 2 hours from me (located in Los Angeles) and I've stopped in to their shop (pre-covid) and they are so helpful and friendly. They even have a shop lizards that freeroam!

You should try mealworms, they are great. We initially started eating them because the geckos didn't want to and know we actually breed mealworms for our own consumption. We just think it's weird because we typically don eat a lot of crawly creatures in our culture :)

I suggest in the usa to go to joshes frogs, occasionally they given you almost pupating waxworms and calciworms (on there it's phoenix worms and black solder fly larvae) but normally it's fine and they have a pretty big selection, although I wouldn't suggest the leopard gecko feeder bundle if you only have one leopard gecko but instead just getting smaller amounts of the things cus I have two geckos but one of them are a picky eater and didn't even try most of the food

Vary his diet. You can feed him roaches, silkworms, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, and occasional mealworms and superworms. Dust with calcium every other feeding and multivitamins every three feedings. Feed him as many feeders as he’ll eat in fifteen minutes, 5-8 is a good amount. Once they’re at least a year old they should be fed every 3-4 days. Between 6-12 months, every other day. You can feed them any time of day but it’s often best to feed them in the late evening/at night when they’re active.

@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 3 жыл бұрын
Eco earth isn’t a good substrate since it tends to be dusty and hard on their joints. It’s unnatural and may be more likely to cause impaction than a natural substrate. New geckos should be quarantined on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor their health. After, I recommend reptisoil or a mix that’s 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand. Just make sure that your husbandry is correct (hot spot of 92-95, ideally overhead heating, etc.) and your gecko will do great.

There are thermostats you can get with a night drop module, such as vivarium electronics. However: I strongly recommend using a halogen bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat instead, they’re far more natural and beneficial than heat mats. They produce infrared a and b like the sun, allowing for deep tissue heating. Whereas heat mats only produce infrared c, the least natural and beneficial type of heat. Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option.

@@nightinggale6470 okay thank you, would I get that instead of a mat? And would the warm hide still be warm with overhead heat?
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 3 жыл бұрын
@@georgiaholliegrace386 yep, instead of a mat. Depending on the material the warm hide is made of (heat conducting materials such as slate and some resin hides are good), overhead heating can heat the inside, but it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t. In the wild reptiles naturally hide to escape heat anyways. And, as long as you provide enough plant coverage around the basking spot, they’ll be comfortable basking. For more information I recommend joining the Advanced Herpetological Husbandry Facebook group. The heating section in the Reptifiles.com leopard gecko care guide also has great info.

hi! I know this isn't really related to the video topic but I recently moved into a new house and my three-year-old leopard gecko (four in a few months) got moved from a 20-gallon to a 40-gallon tank, he hasn't seemed to be enjoying nor staying in his warm hide, I don't know if he likes it or just needs a different hide. everything from his recent enclosure was moved to this one, with an additional 2 plants. Do you have any idea on why this is happening (the hide has an entrance and an exit)? Thanks!

I’d try a different hide. Many geckos prefer ones with one entrance because they’re more secure and less exposed. Make sure the temps are all good as well.

@nightinggale6470

It’s not recommended to breed for multiple reasons: -leopard geckos are extremely overbred as it is. It’s not worth it unless you have a rare morph. -if you don’t know the exact genetics of your geckos they absolutely should not be bred. -it’s extremely expensive. You need to be be prepared to keep and babies that don’t sell. Keep vet bills in mind as well. -it takes a toll on the female, and there’s a risk of her becoming eggbound.

I got my first leopard gecko when I was 12, and another (and a snake) when I was 13. You can get a gecko as long as you can afford them (get a job or make sure your parents are willing/able to pay for everything). Set money aside for emergency vet bills. Do extensive research before getting one (there’s loads of outdated information still circulating unfortunately). Good sources of info include the Advancing Herpetological Husbandry Facebook group, the reptile amino on the app amino, and reptifiles.com. Also have a plan for what’ll happen to the gecko when you go to college. Will your parents care for them?

Avoid chain petstores like PetSmart and Petco. Local petstores can be ok if their animals are healthy and their care is decent. The leopard geckos should be alert and have a healthy looking tail. The gecko should not be too skinny (although keep in mind that babies naturally have smaller tails). They shouldn’t have MBD or any stuck shed. If you want to be safe, find a reputable breeder. Check morph market, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid large scale breeders like BHB and underground reptiles. You can also check Craigslist, or go to a reptile expo.

Don’t use eco earth. It’s dusty, hard on their joints, unnatural, and not a good option for a bioactive substrate. A mix that’s 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand would be good. Regarding the cleanup crew: a lot of the time they’ll be hiding under the leaf litter. Your gecko might eat a few but that’s not a huge deal.

Hey Rebecca, I have been a very big fan of your account for a while now and I just first off want to say that I really respect what you are doing on here and for spreading correct information. Anyways, I really do trust your judgement and if it is not too much to ask I have a few questions that I only feel comfortable asking you as I am moving my leopard gecko to a bioactive setup. My tank size is a 36x18x12 exo terra and I am currently using a large heat mat but I know that a deep heat projector would be ideal. Now the only thing I am worried about is that my tank might be too low for a deep heat projector and the last thing I want is to burn my lil baby (i watched you video all about uvb, deep heat projectors, etc). So I was wondering if there is any way I could get a heat mat to work in a bioactive setup. I know you once used one in Ziggy's very first bioactive setup but I know that you did not add any kind of a drainage layer then but I was planning to add one for safe measures. So I really need your help dividing if a deep heat projector would work or how I could get my current heat mat to work. While we are on the topic, if I were to find a way for a deep heat projector to work, would his only source of heat be to bask on the slate or would the area/ hide underneath be a source of warmth too. The reason so am asking this is because my gecko is a bit shy (I guess you could say) and is not a big fan of standing out in the open as he prefers darker small areas to sleep in. This of course my completely change when or if the projector is offered to him as I know you said your geckos had a change in behavior as well, by the way they are absolutely adorable. And my last question (I know, I am really sorry this is so long haha), but is there any bioactive substrate you can recommend that compares to Earthmix Arid? I have spent ages trying to find a way to get it to the U.S. but unfortunately it can't be done haha. Earthmix arid is really the only substrate that I trust and that I know will promote plant growth and be safe for my geckos, I've heard some good things about the bio dude substrate but I would love your input and suggestions on the situation. Anyways, I apologize this is so long but I just wanted to thank you for always inspiring me to be a better gecko owner and thanks to you I am always finding ways to improve his life so he can continue to thrive. In fact you are actually the reason I got a leopard gecko in the first place so thanks you so, so much. And by the very small chance that you do end up seeing this, I hope you have a wonderful day :)
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not Rebecca but I can answer your questions. I have a deep heat projector with a 24x18x12 tank, so you can make it work with a 12” tall tank. However, an enclosure that’s at least 18” tall would be ideal (to accommodate for climbing enrichment, a thick substrate layer, and overhead heating). You cannot use a heat mat. I actually recommend using a halogen bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat, the levels of infrared a and b they produce are more natural and beneficial than DHPs. Overhead heating can generally heat the inside of hides (depending on the hide) but it’s not the end of the world if they don’t. As long as you provide enough coverage around the basking spot (with plants, branches, etc.) your gecko should be comfortable basking. The bio dude’s substrate is good but overpriced. Zoo med’s reptisoil is a good option. The cheapest option would be to make your own mix. 60% organic top soil without fertilizer and 40% playsand is a good mix. You can add excavator clay as well if you want.
