Hi Sam! This is one of my favorite videos you've done! One of the reasons is because that locomotive you have is EXTREMELY similar to the one that started my love for model railroading! I have a model of the only GS-4 Southern Pacific locomotive that was preserved, the 4449. My dad bought her for me when I was 4 years old, I didn't have any cars for a few months (I don't remember) and it INSTANTLY became my favorite toy EVER!! A few months later I got 5 SP coaches from a train store that no longer exists, and one of the cars me and dad got from a swap meet, and that coach is still used today. I got a starter set for beginning model railroaders and my 4449 was run on it sometime in 2005. Later on, I found some more cars and locos in the garage and added them to my layout, now known as the C.H.P.R.R. (And no, no one will ever know what it's real name is!) Then, during my transition to middle school, I put the C.H.P.R.R away for a few years until 2015, it was then that the 4449 and it's train would make a grand return! However, it doesn't end there, just 2 years ago, my dad bought me another model train, the Jupiter which you've done a review on before, and it was the first new train on the layout in nearly 14 years (all the others I had were found in the garage like I said). To this day, my model 4449 still runs with the same train from 2005, and she still looks just as good as she did back when I first brought her home. So yeah, my model has a LOT of history to it, she was the model locomotive that started my love for trains, and now, nearly 16 years later, she's still running! When I first saw this video, I thought you got the 4449 too, but when you said 4446, I was surprised to know that there were other models like mine. During the review, I had a tsunami of nostalgia and memories of my childhood in model railroading wash over me, and I just wanted to say thanks for this review, you brought back my childhood in the best way possible! My 4449 is the star of my C.H.P.R.R. and there's videos of her and her stepsister engines on my channel if you wanna see them! Thanks for your time and what you do for the hobby, we definitely need more people like you!

Sam, if you want to review an American engine, try looking into the Pennsylvania Railroad's T1 4-4-4-4 Duplex. It's an engine with some interesting history, not just behind it but also the PRR in general.
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Ooh thanks Joe - they sound awesome, I'll look them up - thanks again! Cheers, Sam :)
@PennsyPappas5 жыл бұрын
I have a the T1 engine. A very beautiful loco that was designed to be not only fast but light. It was designed with smaller cylinders and a duplex (non articulated) drive to spread the weight and cause less pounding force on the rails. Which is probably one of the reasons it had that unfortunate wheel slip problem. I love modeling the Pennsylvania railroad and have almost all their steam engines. They too used the belpaire fireboxes like basically every European style steam engine.
@IndustrialParrot28162 жыл бұрын
i would like a T1 but they don't make em in G scale and i ain't gonna spead that much on an HO locomotive
@CarmenFiala2 жыл бұрын
@@PennsyPappas actually, it had such a notoriety for wheelslip because, to put it lightly, the PRR engineers were heavy handed and put too much power on. they were used to the smaller and more responsive K4s, the T1 was an entirely different beast. a couple other railroads tested the T1 when it was being developed, one being N&W, and their engineers were used to larger articulated locos and they reported no issues with it whatsoever
@PennsyPappas2 жыл бұрын
@@CarmenFiala But there still were ways to get rid of wheel slip which is what they did on the Q2 and had the engine been around longer any and all problems could've been corrected. Rashida design but one that people only look at the class instead of the advantages it provided but oh well we'll just have to wait for T1 Trust to right the wrongs of history hopefully.
@railfanjackson45313 жыл бұрын
It is worth noting however regarding your statement at around 6:01 that while 4449 is the sole surviving GS-4 class locomotive, at the Museum of Transportation in St Louis, a very similar GS-6 class, number 4460, also survived, making her the only other surviving GS series loco. And she so happens to be the brilliant wartime black scheme. Seen her twice in person, she’s a real beauty. Maybe one day, you can look at an HO model, as I’m pretty sure that MTH made one not long ago. Granted, that’s quite expensive stuff.

Well almost. But OO Manufacturers decides that they use HO track due to there being more on the market For anyone wondering OO: 1:76.2 HO: 1:87 The reason for (Mostly British) market for using a bigger scale is because back in the day the British could not make electric motors small enough to fit in the model. Unlike the Germans who did have the skill and technology to make motors small enough to fit in a 1:87 locomotive. Like the German manufacturer Marklin. So OO Manufacturers "cheat" a bit with the wheels so they run on HO tracks. There are perfect OO models and OO tracks availve. But they are much rarer and more expensive. Nowadays there is some confusing about true OO scale and OO/HO scale.

You got a good deal for the price you paid. This is an older model and has been re-released with better detailing on. I've seen the real 4449 and it's an amazing locomotive. After the war, all the GS4s that were in Daylight paint were repainted back. A funny note for you, after the GS4s were retired and diesel locomotives took over the Daylight trains, people complained about the air horns. They asked if the air horns from the GS4s could be used instead and Southern Pacific Railroad did switch them out. Great job Sam!

There is no such thing as a cheap Big Boy loco... And frankly to run them without them sticking out foolishly over a curve, requires much more than the 4th radius Hornby curve...
@cosmicshadow84667 жыл бұрын
Ron Clark i can agree with that ( i acctually suggested him getting on myself a while back) but they did build the Big Boy to go over some pretty sharp corners so it would be a good test for the articulation
@ronclark97247 жыл бұрын
Some manufacturers may have built them to go over tight curves, but they look like a compass needle doing so.... Not very realistic at all.... Both the pilot and cab stick out like sore thumbs.... Nor did Sam create his layout, the area that isn't a rug, with a Big Boy in mind. Most likely every bush and fence will be knocked down by the Big Boy....

Some points that may help: -An American "buffer beam" is the pilot. -Mounted on top of the pilot is the cut lever. This is what uncouples or "cuts" the cars. -Sometimes smoke generators develop a bubble, especially right after being filled. Get an eyedropper and blow air down the "smoke stack" to remedy this. - Athearn makes streamlined, free rolling and affordable corrugated steel cars that will go with this well. There are also premium cars available from MTH and Broadway Limited, but they are very heavy and costly.
@trainman070117 жыл бұрын
Also, the Athearn cars are "shorties". This means they are modeled shorter than the actual prototype. This is done to handle tight radius curves like you have on your railroad. Scale size HO American streamliners are roughly a foot long.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, many thanks for those tips - I will give that a try with the smoke! Blimey, a foot? Those do sound impressive, but certainly too large for my tracks! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi Sam, I love the way you raced the engine around the layout. The front piece of the engine is called a skirt. It is not a buffer beam or anything else. It is just a skirt. I thought I should let you know. I'm not a fan of streamliners going slowly, but I am a fan of streamliners going really fast. The part numbers I have are, 1570, 1573, 1574, and 1577. This isn’t a full rake of coaches, but keep in mind that some of the prototype coaches share a truck (bogie). If anyone is looking for a set of Daylight coaches in N-scale, Kato USA used to sell the set; it’s part # 106-060, “Southern Pacific Morning Daylight 10 car set.” reading off the end of the box.

Hello.. that other loco in the vid is an SNCF (france) 141R mikado. In terms of detail on the GS-4 remember that this particular model was made about 15 years (or more) before the Berkshire model, Bachmann have now updated it slightly to modern standards to match that. One thing to be careful with on your gs-4 is the axles, they have plastic center sections and are prone to disintegrating over time let alone use!
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks so much for the info on that - it was bugging me actually not knowing! The french one is actually lima though - it's very strange! Yeah I know - it's a common problem with the split-chassis models, but careful maintenance helps to prevent it! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@willhorowitz88065 жыл бұрын
Technically there were 70 if you count the GS1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. They all had different classifications but they were all considered sisters. And in that respect two have survived, 4449, and the other being GS6 4460. The GS1 was a standard 4-8-4 The GS2 was a streamlined version of the GS1 The GS3 was very similar to the GS2 the only difference being they had larger driving wheels. The GS4 was a GS3 with an enclosed cab and a gyra light. The GS5 was a GS4 with roller bearings. The GS6 was a semi-streamlined GS5 and plain black war babies.

The cow-catcher was not to fend off cattle. It was to protect the engine from collisions with debris, e.g. fallen trees, on the tracks. Now, a cow could be considered debris, especially after a collision with a cow-catcher. The routes were long and ran thru wilderness, so they were difficult to maintain. Something to fend off obstacles helped ensure safety. Typically, cow-catchers were more pointed and less blended into the loco's design than in the Daylight. They were especially prominent on 19th century locos. While the Big Boy is a favorite of rail fans including myself, there were other American locos that were heavier and more powerful. It would be interesting to see the layout that could run one of those 4-8-8-4s or 2-6-6-6s.

Thanks very much for the info on the cow-catcher! Yes it would be interesting to find out - but I'm not convinced that even a big boy would manage them, let alone anything bigger, lol! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I've had this exact loco for about 15 years - the wheels fell off pretty quickly when I was running it. I found out this week that its a common issue and isn't fixable....so be careful with that! Shame cause its a beautiful model.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes you're right, it's a common issue - but it's usually fixable unless the axles are completely messed up: they can be glued back together! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Good Evening Sam, What a awesome review of your Bachmann Southern Pacific GS-4 Steam Locomotive, I love the details and running performance too. £65.00 unbelievable, you must have been very lucky to win it on the auction. 12:55, this locomotive is a SNCF 141R Class 2-8-2 Mikado, these locomotives were built in the United States and Canada to help with the war effort in France during World War 2. Today there are 12 left in preservation, a few in working condition and some on display in museums including a few preserved in Switzerland. Again awesome review! 5 stars ⛤⛤⛤⛤⛤ 10/10 😉

I had one of these many years ago, and found they really like LAMP OIL as smoke fluid. I always use the "Ultra Pure" type that looks clear, like water. Requires lower voltage to smoke, burns cleaner, and any oily residue will evaporate very quickly. Also, I believe 8 to 12 drops is more like it. If it smokes at first, it's probably NOT over filled. it uses fluid very quickly at higher speeds. Also, do NOT run it without fluid! The unit will burn out! (and no, it will NOT catch fire)

Ooh very interesting - thanks for that, I'll definitely give that a try! Thanks for the tips, Sam :)

The drive wheels are a type called "BoxSpok" (pronounced "Box Spoke") and are similar in concept, but slightly different in execution to the Bullied wheels. The name comes from the hollow 'box' cross section of the spokes. For fun look up "Scullin Disk" wheels. Cheers!

It's an older model and therefore detail and painting is not up to todays standards, but for £65,- it's a good deal. Running characteristics of the old Bachman split chassis are surprisingly good. The mystery loco is an older Jouef model, one of the brands that got incorporated to Hornby, I have one of those myself, it has tender drive. It was a French manufacturer, making models mainly of the French Railways SNCF, but they did some foreign prototypes as well, even British prototypes. One may remember their Mk1 and Mk3 coaches. The locomotive you had running is, altough American looking, a SNCF locomotive of the class 141R. The American looks can be explained by the fact that these were ordered from the North American industry after the second world war France was in rubbles after the war, and had a huge shortage of locomotives, being that many destroyed. The French industry was unable to deliver at that point, as most of European industry was, hence the order went to the US (Baldwin, Alco and Lima) and Canada (MLW). The design was for a mixed trafic 2-8-2 locomotive with a top speed of 100km/h or 62mph, and was based on a design for the Green Bay & Western Railroad, adapted with a slightly lower chimney (smoke stack) and dome cover and a more rounded cab roof to fit in the French loading gauge. The CIWL coaches are correct for the French Railways, as many European countries had them registered and did run all over Europe. It was less likely that they did run behind an 141R, because that was not an express locomotive, but could be used in more mountainous terrain
@SamsTrains6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the info, yes this wasn’t too bad for the price! The mystery loco was actually a Lima, which is surprising! Thanks again for the comment, Sam :)

Liked the smoke effect at the end. In one of your running sessions, Daylight had derailment troubles with her tender wheels. Maybe she likes going downhill better than going uphill. Her livery reminds me of the start of a Disney Song, The Circle of Life. There is a music video of this on KZfaq. I recommend you watch it, and, if you like it, you can get my true favourite Disney Story The Lion King on Disney DVD. The story opens with The Circle of Life Song.

The front of American locos are called "pilots" or "cowcatchers" for the Victorian locos. While the livery is SP, it's called "Daylight" to match the trains the locos pulled. Steam got bumped off the Coast Daylight by oh... I believe 1955. 4449 was one of the last to get demoted to general service of which the Northers lost their skirting and painted black. They did get repainted from black back into Daylight after the war. I have the newer version of the model with DCC and the details are about the same, only the new one is shiny. I believe that black loco is French, looks like a 141r, an import from the US or Canada depending on the number.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын

Like seeing a U.S. model with a British OO scale factory coupler on it! If it has a "Rapido" coupler on it, I mix it together on my N scale layout. Between Chinese steam in Iowa and Amtrak having previously run equipment from SJ, DB, and SNCF, not to mention buying stuff from Siemens and Alstom, there's really a "prototype for everything"!

Thanks a lot for this review. It really helped me decide to get this model, though mine is the 4449 and I assume an older variant of the model. It doesn't have the name plates painted and the hand-rails aren't overly shiny. Nevertheless I got it fairly cheap and in good condition so I'm fine with it as it is, though I may add a few touch-ups later on like the name plates and I will also add a little more weight to the tender. This one shall look quite nicely once it is the way I want it.

@@SamsTrains To be honest I think this locomotive is a good choice regardless which version you get. It's simply a particularly beautiful engine. In Germany it is relatively hard to get cause we have mainly Märklin trains here with some Roco and Fleischmann in the mix. But everything else is more or less a rarity. Speaking of which, there is a German locomitive which you may like. If you want to take a look search in google for the S 3/6 Judging from your videos I very much assume you'll like this one.

nice to see some more american locomotives.i love the daylight.it,the C&O hudson and the Norfolk and Western Railway class J are my favorite of the streamlined locomotives ever made and few i know that are in ho/oo scale as well lol.my all time favorite is a steam turbine locomotive from the C&O railway called The C&O's Class M-1 Steam Turbine.i think only one or two were ever made in the real world and didn't last long because of alot problems it had but her design was breath taking from what i see of the pictures of it but sadly that locomotive doesn't have an HO/OO scale model if im not mistaken or if they did it probably not cheap to own one as not many of this model was even made in O gauge which alot of even rare steam engine where made common in that scale so that says alot and i think it because alot people didn't like it but i loved it so hopefully one day i can own one myself if there is an HO/OO scale of it lol but I would love to see a review on the C&O streamlined hudson 4-6-4 if you can get her as she was a beautiful locomotive for her time and even though i never got to see her run because i was born after she stopped running,my town bank which use to be a train station back in the day has pics of her and other passenger trains that came to that stationway back when so i always thought it was cool to know that beautiful streamlined locomotive use to run threw my town at one time so i always like to watch models of the hudson running around on people's layouts for that reason
