I've never seen a song bring out such deep emotions and joy in both men to a lesser extent and for sure to most women. Bobby did have the voice of an Angel and I think God rigged the coin toss on who got to sing this song Bobby or Bill Medley. Bill would have done a very good job but God wanted to gift humanity with a perfect version. :)

Unchained Melody was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' (1955). It was first sung in the movie by African American opera singer, film and Théâtre actor Todd Duncan. The song was composed by Alex North with lyrics by Hy Zaret. Since 1955 this song has been sung by major recording artist from around the world. Making it one of the most recorded songs in history. In a live television performance on the 'Andy Williams Show' 1965. Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' gave an epic performance that was one for the ages. His rendition has become the version every recording artist has used and uses today. Making it the quintessential version of them all. The rest as they say is history.
@richardzinno4909
@richardzinno4909 2 жыл бұрын
Todd Duncan did steal the show, in the movie “Unchained”, with his rendition of the movie’s theme song. He sings the song in its entirety during a live action scene, which depicts the tortured souls of the prison inmates. Duncan’s version was, necessarily, more restrained than Hatfield’s version, because of the intimate setting, of prisoners gathered, listening in sorrow. Todd Duncan would’ve been a much more famous singer (perhaps adding “recording star”, on top of his successful career in opera and stage); if the movie “Unchained” made it past the Drive-In Theater circuit.

@@glendirienzo1365 yup. But the Righteous Brothers (really Bobby Hatfield's rendition) is the best. But I loooove Elvis's version, it's incredible. Elvis had the unique ability to do a cover almost as good or better than the original. Bridge over troubled water, My way, and Unchained Melody are 3 examples that come to mind. Plus all his gospel stuff is incredible

This performance is from, The Andy Williams show. Andy Williams and Bill Medley ( the other Righteous Brother) are letting Bobby Hatfield perform solo as they would ruin it if they tried to add anything to it. Bill Medley said how he regretted letting Bobby Hatfield sing the song without him, because there was no way to duet could be as good as Bobby's solo.

They aren't letting him sing it solo. It was his song for years. Plus, the studio recording had been out for months by the time of this show and was already a big hit with only Bobby singing it. They both did solos throughout their career as the Righteous Brothers on records and in shows.

For those interested in the technical difficulty of this performance. Check this out. The note progression is. B4, B sharp, D, D sharp, E, F, F sharp, G, G sharp, A, A sharp, B, C, (octave up) C sharp, D, D sharp, E, F, F sharp, G, G-5 21 notes Precious few vocalists can do that and maintain control while making it look so easy. And all that with no autotune or other electronic enhancements other than a simple microphone and a great orchestra.

I made this comment on another reaction to this video. I was 14 when this song came out and the first time I heard it it moved me to tears (almost). Back in my day boys didn't cry (publicly) to emotional things. Now when we get together (those of us who are left) readily admit that this song brought all of us to the brink. It just grabs your heart and won't let go. I' happy that young people are listening and appreciating it. Thanks for the video and thanks to Bobby Hatfield may he rest in peace. Kevin O'Rourke

The song had been playing for a couple weeks prior to this television program on " top 40 " radio stations and was already well received by listeners. I've carried the memory a long time now.
