From the David Lee Roth era: "And the Cradle Will Rock" "Panama" "Hot For Teacher" From Van Hagar: "Runaround" "Poundcake" "The Dream is Over" Van Halen is pretty much a radio band. They are solid across the board but a lot of their stuff has a similar feel to it. Oh yeah, and I can't remember whether you guys have done "Eruption Live Without a Net" but if you haven't and you want to watch Eddie shred for a solid 10 minutes that should be your next watch. Happy Haunakwanzmas (or whatever variety of seasonal cheer you may go in for). Looking forward to seeing what you've got in store for 2020.

Having seen Van Halen on their 1st 2 tours their music was fast catchy and fun. David Lee Roth was their vocal signature. His stage performances were highly arrogant. His lyrical style was like a Las Vegas stage act. The band truly does rock but the songs are all dedicated to pop radio culture. Running With The Devil Ain't Talking About Love Everybody Wants Some

Van halen songs that are more off the chain: Ice Cream Man On Fire Atomic Punk Everybody Wants Some Take Your Whiskey Home Mean Street Loss of Control Unchained is one of those songs where Dave would interact with the audience during that interlude part, hey man that suit is you... . That phrase by the way became a thing back then, also, I like the way the line runs up the back of those stockings. Dave was quite the character, dudes wanted to be him, chicks literally threw themselves at him, you should check out some of his solo vids like Just a Gigolo. Ive seen the original lineup once, Dave solo band with Steve Vai etc, Eat Em and Smile album, once (was amazing show), Dave touring with Sammy Hagar after Hagar got booted out of VH, and Van Halen reunited once, which was also a great show, Eddies son on Bass, no Michael though. I couldnt do Van Hagar.

Interesting tidbit about the bridge where DLR makes the comment, "take look at this. Man, that suit is you. You'll get some leg tonight for sure," and the guy comes back with, "come on, Dave, gimme a break." That was totally ad libbed and real. While the band was recording "Unchained" (the used to record bands live back in those days), one of the engineers came into the control room dressed in a full suit. As kind of a joke, Dave used the intercom to the control room and uttered those famous words, figuring they'd just redo the take. The engineer responded and it was caught on tape. And the "one break, coming up," was a perfect segue into the chorus, made up on the spot. Everyone thought it was such a brilliant chance thing that they decided to keep it. Now everyone thinks it was written that way, but not at all. It's weird how cool things like that just happen sometimes. Unfortunately, now that bands mostly record instrumental tracks separately, you don't get that interaction between vocalist and band, and that's one reason why so much of what you hear on the radio these days is boring.

There's a great interview with DLR where he talks about coming up doing music and theater in school being a fantastic backgroud to be a rock star. Growing up competing for first seat in band class trained them to perform correctly on cue. BTW, VH never really goes off script. They do tight, compact songwriting and they kill it. Every. Single. 9.5 for me. Dave’s bridge knocks it down for me (especially after all these years), while the unsung instrumental layers breaking down and building up throughout the song take it from mere radio friendly hit to an epic rocker.

You guys are quickly becoming... no scratch that... have quickly become my favorite REACTION channel. Your insights are awesome which I directly attribute to the fact that you both are musicians. I am a product of the 70's/80's and grew up with all this great music around me. Keep up the awesome work! I give this song an 9.5/10 for a Van Halen song. This was indeed a "radio song" but it wasn't a blatant radio song like Jump or Panama or anything from that album was. DLR was a phenomenal entertainer and arguably one of the great front men in all of music. Too bad all great things get old. Thanks for your interest in all these great songs... Cheers.

Unchained was absolutely not a radio hit. That's why Fair Warning was the worst selling VH album....because the songs were just flat out awesome rock and none of them was a surefire single hit. Unchained is arguably their greatest song....and it never even cracked the top 10 on the mainstream rock billboard chart. It was not overplayed, or it would have been much higher than #13 at the time. And yes i agree they should listen to Hear About it Later and Little Guitars....plus Secrets and So this is love?

Very good review guys! Nice having musicians do reaction vids because you know the nuts and bolts of what's going on musically and vocally as well. I have played this song in cover bands and that syncopated section makes the song a really fun song to play. Can you guys review a VH song with Sammy Hager on vocals as well? Summer Nights, Dreams, Cabo Wabo, or Mine All Mine would suffice! Cheers!

Great reaction guys!! That beginning with the crunchy guitar riff ALWAYS gets me, then the bass & drums kick in, and you've got a rawkin' banger - the party has begun!! I still remember when my sister introduced Van Halen to me (I was 5 or 6...the album 1984 had just come out), and Fair Warning took a bit more for me to get in to (hey, I was listening to Smurfs & Sesame Street at the time), but I immediately took to Unchained! Speaking of 1984, I would LOVE to see you guys react to I'll Wait. It's more of a synth journey, but one of those darker, not as well known tracks that just kicks A$$!!! Cheers guys.

Romeo Delight, Light Up the Sky, Fools, In a Simple Rhyme, I’m the One, One Foot out the Door. On Fire also but it’s so short. Many times used as opener in concert as was Romeo Delight, with that classic line “We’re in for a very long night”

I hope some fellas in here will back me up when I request a very underrated band called XYZ who's dirty guitar player has the most insane guitar tone I think I've ever heard, I hope som Van Halen fans know what I'm talking about. So dirty yet so clean. The song "Face down in the gutter" is so god damn catchy and that riff is so raw you'll want to bite the head off an innocent rabbit so I hope you'll listen to that song. Trust me, a random comment amongst other comments.

This is my favorite VH album. Raw, dark, heavy. I will say I always hated the breakdown. 'You'll get some leg tonight for sure'. Just thought it took the momentum out of the song. Just my opinion. Still a good song. Dirty Movies may be my fave on this though. Now the breakdown in that, works. Great stuff guys!

Know what you mean, but the song came out when I was in high school, so I've always just viewed the break through that joking, adolescent mindset. Which they probably did, too.
