Oh man, he totally reminded me of my wonderful step dad and an uncle I grew up with. Dad looked, was built like, and acted a lot like him. My uncle looked nothing like him, but was just crazy enough that the kids adored him, the men liked him, and the women were just kind of appalled at him 😏👍. Every John Candy movie was like a family get together for me. I can't hardly watch the final scenes from Buck and Planes, Trains and, Automobiles. He looks just like daddy in both. 😭

John Hughes wrote Uncle Buck - AND he wrote Home Alone; Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; Planes, Trains and Automobiles; all the National Lampoon’s movies; The Breakfast Club; Weird Science, Pretty in Pink etc etc. Basically most of the films that defined the 80s. He was a genius.

I wouldn't go that far. He wrote most of the films of that particular genre at that time that defined the era. There were other great comedies at that time that were more of an "mature" nature and there were iconic franchises like the "Indiana Joes" movies.

He did write home alone but gave it to another director. Chevy Chase was the cause of that in the making of Christmas vacation.

The way he handles Tia at the end is a testament on how to earn respect of a teenager who is between childhood and adulthood. He respected her boundaries while also protecting her by any means necessary. He also appealed to her on an intellectual level by asking for her relationship advice. I was an angsty teenager myself, and everything changed when my parents started treating me like a man. We became fast friends after that.

That last freeze on John Candy’s face brought a tear to my eye. Growing up with him on SCTV and his movies. He was very special to my generation. Especially outcast teenagers like myself.

I used to watch SCTV when I was babysitting hooker's kids. Really. I could make $40 in one night, in 1980! For a 16-year-old, that was serious cash. My twisted sense of humor owes a lot to John Candy.

Same 😢He was HILARIOUS in Stripes as well. Guys like him aren't the outcasts-everyone else is, and they just don't know it. I still feel sad about his passing, even today. But he lives on through the laughter he still brings to past, current and future generations. 💔/💖

John Candy is probably one of the most (if not the most) beloved comedian in the US and Canada in the mid-late 80s and early 90s until his untimely death. Everyone loved him, from normal people to critics to his fellow actors. Losing him was a real punch in the gut. I still remember, being around 17 ... my Mom coming into my room to tell me he had died.

Lost him way too soon and despite trying, Chris Farley was no John Candy. Candy always had a sense of warmth in his characters. There was always a redeeming value in sticking with him.

No one like John Candy. He was good in everything he did. From Second City all the way to 'Canadian Bacon' he never stopped giving laughs and true moments of poignancy. A real Canadian treasure.

That teenager deserves an award for her acting as a rebelious teenager awesome acting amazing, in fact everyone in this movie deserves an award, the caring from buck the hard work trying and doing a tremendous job and that building of trust from the rebelious teenager, my favourite movie of all time hands down

Favorite part of movie starts with Buck walking down school hallway. Music is powerful. Ends with him telling off the Ground rincipal. What a movie.

@@NavvyMom probably just extras. I was an extra in a Disney film in the 90s but they don't give credits to extras. It was just fun to do.

@@80sGamerLady Yes, you're probably right, but it would be interesting and fun to try to pick them out if Daniel could say which scene(s) they were in. I know a guy who used to do that, he even had a SAG card even though he was only ever an extra. If you ever saw Witness, his coat is in the scene at 30th Street Station. He got all made up to be a ghost in a window of an abandoned hospital in The Sixth Sense, but they cut that scene from the finished film. He was in a few other ones that I can't remember. As you said, it was fun for him. He encouraged us to do it, but we never had time. I know they only give credits for speaking lines. Hey, what film were you in? Would we be able to do a "Where's Waldo"? (Unless you'd rather not say of course.)

John Candy is one of the greatest comedic actors of the 80s. EVERYBODY loved him. I don't know 1 person in my life that didn't like him. What a loss when he died. Uncle Buck is one of his best roles too, so glad you enjoyed it(had no doubt you would).

I actually had an Uncle Buck. He was my grandmother’s brother. For years we just knew him as Uncle Buck and he also always wore a fedora. It was only after he passed away a decade or so back that I found out his real name was Mark.

I had an uncle Charlie that was a lot like this Buck. My dad was too...and looked and was built like him and from the part of the country his characters were often from.... even had an Elmer Fud fur hat 😁.

Uncle Buck aka John Candy was a comedy acting legend. You can watch any of his movies and you will be laughing so hard that you are going to pee yourself. He has truly been missed. None of this new generation of comic actors can come close to the natural comedic genius of John Candy.

That wave goodbye from John Candy is hard to see since his passing. I'm sure others have mentioned it but Planes, Trains and Automobiles is absolutely brilliant. Another top notch performance by Candy with another comedy genius Steve Martin. They play off each other so well. It's a great one too watch during the holidays, esp. thanksgiving. Enjoyed your parental perspective on this reaction. I could see the tension when the creeps were bothering the older sister at the bowling alley. I think he let them off too easy.

RIP John Candy. His comedy is sorely missed. The dude had heart. The last good movie he did before his passing which also was funny was Cool Runnings. When I found he passed after watching the Great Outdoors with him and Dan Akroyd it was such a gut punch, because he is such a likeable guy. John Hughes directed this movie, and he grew up in Chicago, you see his stamp on all his movies like Ferris Bueller, Breakfast Club, and this one. He was a huge part of 80s nostalgia.

I was born in 75 and it's so fun to watch people get a kick out of the movies I grew up with. Uncle Buck is a classic, I would admire it more but I couldn't even fit it thought the door.

I'm still sad to this day that the world was deprived of John Candy so early. I don't think I've ever seen a bad movie with him in, he would have gone on and had an incredible catalogue of good movies. I'm just glad we got the films we did from him, The Great Outdoors is another classic to watch along with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. RIP John.

I was 16 when this movie came out. Late 80s were just the best times to be a kid/teen. So many great movies, many of them had John Candy in them. He was beloved. Do a deep dive on his movies and documentaries about him. He truly was just a nice/good person. I ugly cried when he died!!!

Great reaction, a few more good John Candy movies are " Cool Runnings" about the 1988 Jamaican Bob Sleigh team, its based on a true story, John plays the coach, it is a great underdog story similar to Rocky 1. A great film to watch around Thanksgiving is "Planes Trains and Automobiles" it stars John and Steve Martin, its about a couple of guys trying to get home during thanksgiving. , and last but not least is " The Great Outdoors' starring John and Dan Akroyd, its basically about a family relationships set in the outdoors.

Planes Trains and Automobiles, is my favorite film of his but this is my favorite with him in the sole starring role. I have been a fan of his since the SCTV days. Great comedic actor that passed away far too soon!

Yes the little sister is from “Field of Dreams” she’s played by actress Gabby Hoffman, who also comes out in “Now and Then” which is sort of like “Stand By Me” but with a female cast. Y’all should check it out, for when you’re in the mood for another coming of age movie.

I loved John's character in home alone you can just tell he wasn't really acting you can see that he was that type of guy in real life.john could get any woman he wanted because you can tell that he was just the sweetest guy on the planet who would do anything to help another person.ive never ever heard anyone say a bad word about him.his compassion just comes through in his acting.we didn't just lose a great actor we lost a great human being.

John Candy is one of the reasons I'm proud to be Canadian. I was 9 when he passed in 94 and it still stings. A really genuine and loveable guy like him to just pass away that young always hurts but at least we had him for a while. I love Uncle Buck and most of his films but my favourite is The Great Outdoors, still makes me laugh and I've seen it countless times. Do yourselves a favour and watch that next and if you want a serious role, he has a small part in JFK.

The girl who plays Tia, Jean Louisa Kelly, is a super-talented musical theater performer. Most people probably know her from her fantastic singing in "Mr Holland's Opus" and the TV comedy series "Yes, Dear." Most recently, she played Iceman's wife for like ten seconds in "Top Gun: Maverick."

I think John Goodman would've been suitable too, but JC really did make his characters HIS. I always felt like he put A LOT of himself into the roles. His characters were pretty much just different aspects of the same guy. That's why I really think you could actually feel like you knew him. Imagine him as your next door neighbor or a family member 😁👍.

I've been recommending 'Uncle Buck' to people for 30+ years. A lot of people have never heard of it. I'll never forget seeing it for the first time with my dad, when it was released in theaters in '89. We (and everybody in attendance) knew we were seeing an instant, timeless classic. I'm so glad you two finally got to experience this potent combination of John Candy's brilliant acting and John Hughes' incredible writing/directing. Cheers!

The little boy if course is Macauley Culkin who would became a huge star one year later in "Home Alone". He's basically playing Kevin McCallister in this film but he is hilarious and cute and more than holds his own against John Candy (In which this could be his best role). That lady playing Shanice was in "Field Of Dreams". Her name is Amy Madigan and she again plays a snappy and feisty character in "Uncle Buck" who I just love. She is mostly a character actress but she starred in a few big movies like "Uncle Buck" in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It's too bad that her career never took off. She is a really talented actress.

The last frame of the movie always makes me smile, because that was what John Candy did in real life. I had the pleasurer of meeting him a few times before he passed. The first time, he was in a recording studio, when he and his mother and brother Jim enjoyed the session in the recording booth (they were long time friends of the guitarist Mike McKenna). We went back to the Candy home down the street to moms' where the boys grew up. Mom gave me the house tour of their modest East Toronto home. The 2nd time, I serviced John's lawn for a spring weed and feed. He almost crapped his pants when I introduced myself, and gave me the 25 cent tour, (along with a few beers). John Candy was the real, genuine deal. RIP brother.

I love this movie. A prime example of cinema at its best. You laugh, cry, cheer, and self-reflect. The movie has a sole, something that Hollywood has lost in a lot of its modern films today.

John Candy and John Hughes and Kulkin...perfection. John Candy was something special. He's just so pleasant to watch and really the perfect guy to play that eccentric or estranged uncle. And a lot of what people miss about the 80's is John Hughes, I mean no one carried the torch after he died. No one writes teenagers like he could. And you gotta love the atmosphere in his films because they're all shot in Chicago..which just feels more authentic than the usual California.

I was a single full time Dad struggling with 3 boys . This movie would go in on Friday or Saturday when we had a bad week, we would make popcorn there were a group movies that we had. Uncle Buck, Major Payne, the Sandlot were on the top of the list. I haven't seen this movie in years. I full admit that I teared up watching this review. I am realizing that we made it and they doing great on their own. Thank you!

20 years ago, my Dad gained full custody of us from a dysfunctional home. He was 30, single, working full-time, and raising three kids (two boys and a girl), me being the oldest at ten. All four of us loved hanging out and watching movies, with Uncle Buck being one in particular that we watched almost on a weekly basis. I'm 30 now, and I still love watching the film every once in a while. It brings a tear to my eye when I see the end scene with John Candy waving good-bye, for reasons of loving him and the movie bringing back memories I hold dear. It's one hell of a coincidence to see your comment on a reaction to one of my favorite movies. Hope you're doing well.

This movie never gets old. It's so wholesome and fun. Great life messages in there. Fun fact : Danny DeVito was the original choice for Buck but he turned the role down. John Candy made this role his own.

Great reaction as always, guys. John Candy was always a pleasure to watch...and his sudden passing in the early 1990s was a real loss to the art. Anyway, another great movie featuring John Candy is 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles' from 1987. IMHO, this is one of the best movies of all time. It's also generally regarded as a Thanksgiving movie, so it may be one that you may want to react to around the Thanksgiving season (or any time actually). Awesome movie --- "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles".

One of my favorite movies of all times. John Candy was such a wonderful actor and comedian. Always watched him on SCTV and have seen all his movies. If you loved him in this one you need to watch "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" with him and Steve Martin. It is hilariously funny but also touching film that I know you would both enjoy.

The reason the homes looked similar to the ones in Home alone is because they are both directed by John Hughes, and he based many of his movies in the suburbs of Chicago. He also directed The Breakfasts Club, which you've seen. John Hughes was an amazing director. We lost him was too soon

Such a funny movie. You can also see him play a small part in Home Alone at the end of the movie in the airport scene. Another good family movie is the Great Outdoors. One of my favorites.

The actress who plays Tia the teenage daughter is an amazing singer. Her name is Jean Louise Kelly and you should check her rendition of Someone To Watch Over Me on Female Friday, or you can see her sing in the movie Mr Holland’s Opus. It is a very good movie about teaching.

Enjoyed your reactions. I was born in 1972. Senses or humor, in the 1980s, was very different than today. We didn't see an issue laughing at insults or putdowns or even violent comedy. Not sure why. That's just how it was. 🤘😎🤘

I really like this couple and their reactions, and there's nothing wrong with being kind or socially aware, but the modern day level of social justice seems to have programmed an entire generation to automatically be offended or humourless over the tiniest of things. I don't think I've ever met a person who hasn't laughed their ass off at the 'get a rat to gnaw that thing off' line, yet new generations have been brainwashed into being too scared to laugh.

John Candy was also in Home Alone who had helped Kevin's mother return home to Kevin in Chicago. The story goes John Candy was offered a piece of the box office sales but decided to work for free as a favor to his friend, director John Hughes. He would later regret that decision when box office sales for Home Alone added up to over $470 million for less than a $20 million budget. We'd lost John Candy way too early; one of my favorite movies he stars in is the inspirational movie 'Cool Runnings'. The true-story features Jamaica's run as the country's first bobsled team during the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary which John Candy is recruited as their coach. And during Thanksgiving you really should check out 'Planes Trains and Automobiles'. Amber, get your Kleenex ready!

Other than the original 1984 "The Karate Kid", I very highly recommend the 1988 John Candy movie "The Great Outdoors". Looking forward to your next music and movie reactions. 😊

John Candy was a phenomenal comedian. He's been in so many classic comedies from the 1980s and early '90s. Uncle Buck we actually just recently got a chance to watch in the theaters again It was just as hilarious as the first time I saw my sons who are young men found it completely hilarious. One of my sons I promised him he was going to be just like him I'm sure of it. I'm sure you will love this film. Check out a lot more of his starring roles when you get a chance one of my favorites is summer rental, Cool runnings, and only the lonely
