I only found you a couple days ago and have been eating this up. You're a data nerd like me, and I'm loving it. Kinda wish you had a publicly available and queryable database for all your stuff. (I'm neither asking nor expecting you to produce one, just wishing "out loud". Take it as a form of admiration for the knowledge you've got in that wonderful brain of yours.)

For what its worth, gold dots come in 62 grain as well. Problem is, gold dots are imfamously loaded mildly. Federal fusion msr is the same bullet, but loaded hotter. Federal is coming out with a tipped fusion. Id love to see reviews on its terminal ballistics and see how my 18" can grouo them.

Great video, i love when you do ammo selection videos. Your knowledge is appreciated, i personally have run the federal fusion in my AR for home defense for awhile now, glad to see it on your list. I would like to get some speer gold dots but for some reason they are extremely rare in my area. Also like the lil bits of extra infor like the federal 64gr sp, just happen to have some of those!!

I inherited a Styer-Mannlicher SL Varmint from my father that was a work of art... double set trigger, hammer forged fluted barrel (the flutes were actually spiral forged in)... beautiful carving on the stock. That thing was capable of printing a dime-size group at 200 yards. Had it up until it was stolen (along with my gun safe) 12 years ago) I wonder how it would have performed with some these choices? My father and I were (are?) reloaders, and he had already ginned up his tack driver round when he was still PCS in Germany. Man, I wish he had lived longer. He would be flabbergasted by how far firearms technology has come in 25 years. (not only firearms, but pretty much everything else) Please keep up the good work!

Great over all explanation and overview of some of the best cartridges on the market for the 5.56 platform, in both the short barrel and DMR style rifles... I come from a similar background, which gave me the opportunity to test and field most of these loads. I initially discarded any interest in the 300 Blackout when it first came on the scene, but after some lengthy investigation found it had substantial merit for an entry gun... Say 12.5" barrel. With this size, you can run Hornady CX 110 gr projectiles at 2,335 fps. , which brings just a little more to the game when compared to the 5.56 heavy's in the same barrel length, and I have tried the Lehigh Defense 110 gr Controlled Chaos projectile also, for some interesting wound capabilities . With that said, I think the Blackout is better suited to thise that can get the most out of it through Hand Loading, specific to their platform... thanks for the great information and sharing your knowledge about these great loads for use in the 5.56 platform...👍

@@unclefreedom213 i think it was Andrew on the arfcom Channel that did gel block testing on m855a1. He was using really short barrels and still getting crazy results in gel, those tests are what made me decide to go ahead and buy some. M80a1 pops up on tacswap sometimes,there is a 100 round belts with tracer very 3-4 rounds for 550 on there right now. Not sure i want 100 rounds but 10-20 would be cool. I don’t have a larger 30 cal rifle than a 308 but pulling the bullets for something like that might be worth the investment lol.

I was surprised to see Fort Scott mentioned. They are my go to for rifle rounds. They have a 45 gr loading as well. They also partnered with Maxim defense and created tui ammo specifically for short barreled rifles. I’d like to see someone test the G9 defense barrier blind hollow points. I love G9’s pistol ammo

Great discussion (because I agree with everything you said 😉 ). In my own limited testing I found that the M855 is not only inaccurate, it performed very poorly through windshield glass and not that well through automotive sheet metal. I settled on the 64 and later 62 grain Gold Dot.

The most accurate green tip I've ever used was PMC x-tac. As far as load spec goes it may not be as hot as "real" M855 ......you are right though brother- I'm not arguing AT ALL. It's just in my 13.7 SOLGW and my buddies 16" POF gas gun it shoots better than regular M855. I just noticed last weekend. We were at 85-90 yards and laying prone and I found some in my bag and we both shot a group for morbid curiosity during other load testing lol. We were pleasantly surprised when my gun shot .1.190ish and his POF shot it like 1.100ish. That not good by any means BUT it was way better than most M855. Just putting it out there in case someone has some or needs to shoot it for some reason.....it was only about half as bad as normal M855 through our guns. Hell my 13.7 throws like 3 + inch groups with the federal green tip. Winchester and Privi green tip too.

I found myself considering a small amount of fort scott's 62 grain tui for a fairly niche sort of reason. Hear me out. It's for an 18" precision sort of rifle. Heavy barrel, 10 power maximum optic. Something like TMK is accurate, and terminally effective, but the moment it hits auto glass, or metal, the bullet has all the terminal effect of birdshot in gel on the other side. Federal fusion which is still my favorite standard go-to round in a low magnification 14.5 defeats barriers, and does work on a soft target, but still has a velocity dependent expansion threshold, and seems to shoot 2 MOA at best from my barrels. I'm now considering fort scott's tui for its barrier blindness, and its tumbling capability to do the damage of 7n6 even after punching through a windshield and down to subsonic speeds. Its main problem is that it is known to overpenetrate, but that doesn't seem to be a concern in a WROL kind of situation, and I guess people aren't the biggest fan of tumbling over expansion/fragmentation. So I'm thinking the TUI is oddly enough sets itself apart as a 5.56 projectile for staying true to its ideal terminal performance at super long range, low velocities, and punching through barriers for a precision build

@unclefreedom213 very informative video. Been trying to find something like this for a while. Most only worship the idea if carrying a single type round. But I feel that like "Shotgun rounds" there is a tool for every job. Been wanting to see someone push the idea that if you had 6 magazines in a carry bag, 1 would carry barrier breaching ammo, 2 would carry close quarter defensive rounds, and the final 2 would be expanders that would give you both distance and penatration. Would this line of thinking have credibility to live defensive scenarios? (If it could be mentioned in a future video).

Nd55664 is also a trophy bonded bear claw. It is a 64 grain boat tail tbbc loaded to 5.56 pressure. Problem is the 'nd' indicates its 'not for duty use' for one reason or another, and its inaccurate as hell doing 5 and 6 moa groups out of the same rifle that did ~2 moa groups with federal fusion msr a moment before.

I recall reading that SEALs liked running 77gr Mk262 in their 10.3” Mk18s. I seem to remember that it was about longer dwell time for reliability in cycling the weapon, but that it also had good terminal ballistics at close range. I am not a ballistics nerd, so could you weigh in on this? I’ve got a stash of 77gr IMI for my 10.5” gun, and am wondering if I should reconsider this- I’ve only used it for punching paper thus far…

If you want accurate ammo 75 grain Hornady jacketed hollow points you could get 79 grain Black Hills you could get any number of actual Precision Ammo m855 is made for fighting it's not inaccurate it's exactly as accurate as it's supposed to be

Actually 855 was designed to penetrate a ruskie steel helmet at 400 yards or so from the M249 SAW. It was never supposed to used in the M16 let alone the M4. It's a less accurate round by design which cover pretty hard in ammo consideration. It's very important to understand what your rifle will do with terrible ammo

@calebsone1630 5 ай бұрын
@unclefreedom213 what are you actually-ing? Mr. Ballistics while you are showing us your range targets, you are missing one HUGE part of this equation. The barrels twist rate significantly impacts the accuracy of any rifle. If the ammo doesn't like that twist rate it will perform slowly. Milspec 5.56 rounds have a twist rate of 1:7, you see some slower twist rates of 1:8, 1:9. For a 1:7 twist rate barrel you should be running heavier rounds 62 grain maybe even 75 grain rounds for optimal performance. Now as to your love of high priced ammo, go for it dude.Most of us don't have the deep pockets you do. Most of those 53-55 grain rounds would perform poorly in a 1:7 twist rate barrel. I am betting your rifle has a 1:8 or 1:9 twist rate. One last note. In a defensive environment you are not going to be taking 300 yard shots. If you are, you are no longer defensive, You are now are now on the offense. if I am going to shoot long range I will be breaking out a better rifle, .308/30-06/.270/.240 just to name a few, all of which are superior to the 5.56 at ranges of 300 yards or more.
@unclefreedom213
@unclefreedom213 5 ай бұрын
I cover twist rate in the marksman video. You woild be wrong the rifle that shot those targets is a 1:7 I have shot all the way to 40gr Varmageddon doing Mach Jesus from a 1:7 with sub minute results. I've never had any issues running 53 and 55gr. You're right it can impact accuracy but that is primarily due to the stability of the projectiles. I've also run 1:9 twist with 77gr tmks still stabilizes with a 18 to 20 inch barrel.

@@unclefreedom213 Your first assumption that is automatically the ammo, needs to be validated. 1:7 twist rifles suboptimal for 55 grain rounds, they tend to tumble and keyhole, you may not hve experienced it but there is plenty testing to validate the finding, some of those tests were done by other youtubers. BTW a 3 inch group at 100 yards is good enough for me. For that matter if you can hit an 8 inch dinner plate off hand consitantly at 100 yards the threat will be stopped.
