A family member learned some of these lessons, the hard way. Decided that his first AR rifle would be an AR-10, and bought the cheapest one he could find, which, at the time was the entry level DPMS, then bought two cases of Wolf 7.62x51. Topped it off with an Amazon special scope...spent the entire first range trip using a cleaning rod to remove steel cases from his chamber because the extractor was tearing the rim off the Wolf ammo. When I gave him some Winchester 7.62 to, at least, try to zero, the Amazon optic had him shooting a 20 inch group at 100 yards. He gave up after two boxes of ammo were wasted. I haven't seen him take that rifle to the range, since, and that's been almost five years.

My only argument for stocking fmj as your primary choice is that most of us cant drop a small fortune on a range day. I love vmax, but it costs 30.99 a box near me. 8 mags of vmax costs $371. I cant put enough rounds down range to prove it works good for me since 1 range day would cost 400 dollars after range fee, gas, ect. I can buy pmc m193 for 10.99 a box, bringing that price down to $131. This ammo is reliable and accurate in my guns and wont make me homeless trying to prove this through range days.

Between my Girlfriend, Daughter and myself we, all 3 of us shoot about 20,000 rounds of Center-fire Ammo a year (Reloading is FUN and relaxing) and probably 12,000 to 15,000 rounds of Rim-Fire ammo. We have over the past year and a half started shooting more 22lr because I got into long range shooting the 22lr and we have AR's and Pistols that are Clones of our Full Size stuff so we still get training in while shooting our 22's. Its not 💯 but it keeps our fundamentals on point. All the new folks, listen to what this Man is saying, he knows his shit. 🤙🏻

I was doing that payday process for a couple years to at least get a stockpile built. That was when Walmart still sold ammo. I stop by each payday and pick up usually Winchester white box 100-200rnd packs of 9mm and a box or 2 of Federal 5.56 55g 150rnd box. Now that I have at least a generic stockpile built, I'm working on the higher end ammo stockpiling now. Just been trying to figure out what I should focus on for the premium ammo instead of just grabbing something off the shelf. Sources like Uncle Freedom who are in environments with more testing or real life exposure helps me focus from just adding hollowpoint to a specific brand/style so I can have a consistent load. Now, if it wasn't such a pain to buy ammo where I'm at so I could get back into a buying pattern.

Great content as always. I mostly buy factory defensive ammo and the couple calibers I don't reload, other than that I reload all my stuff. Most is FMJ for target practice with a couple thousand rounds a year being JHP for second tier use and as deep storage. Mostly the JHP is Hornady XTP because it is plentiful and reasonably priced for stocking up. I totally agree with you on picking your top couple platforms and focusing on them. I only have a few hundred rounds of the oddball .303 British, 7.62x54R, 45-70 Govt. or what not, but stock 9mm, 5.56, and .308 Win fairly deep because in any kind of emergency they are going to be my go to platforms.

Let's keep in mind that if you have so much ammo and equipment that you cannot carry it, there is the risk of you becoming combat ineffective. I, personally, cannot carry 10,000 rounds of ammo in mags, a weapon system and all my other gear and still expect to be able to bug out or move from one defensive position to another effectively. I believe in having a whole bunch but you also need to be able to move when needed. If your whole plan revolves around you holing up and staying put, you should be fine....

Although I do order a case of range ammo maybe once every 2-3 months that with picking up 100-150rds on the way to the range. As far as my defensive ammo I try and order a minimum 3-5 boxes a week which psa aac makes that pretty easy

Great viewpoints. Completely agree on almost, if not all of it. Ammo isn’t something you acquire once. It’s a constant Ying and Yang. What I shoot today I need to replace for tomorrow. What may be easily available today may not be 6 months or a year from now. Best of them all and what drives me insane (or creates buying opportunities) is when someone buys a new rifle and only shoots the cheapest shit on planet earth and then sells it for not being sub MOA. When I get a new rifle, I’ll buy the cheap stuff for barrel break in to see if I get lucky for a cheap load to group well. But I’ll also buy 5+ “premium” loads for that caliber to test out the barrel length and twist rate to see what it “likes”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen guys sell GREAT guns because “I couldn’t get it to group well”. When I ask, “what did you shoot to test it with?” The answer is almost always 55gr 556 / 147 or 149 gr 308 or 120gr 6.5 CR. When I follow up with “did you try any other loads to see what it likes?” The response is almost always “that’s what I have stock piled so if it doesn’t like that round, why would I buy something more expensive.” To which I’ll reply “makes sense, how much are you selling it for and how many rounds have you put through it?” One man’s loss is another man’s gain… You can’t fix stupid… technically you can and you could but the question is should you? Looking forward (and backwards) at your other content. God bless!!!

Military requires FMJ. During CQB it is common practice to shoot 3 to 5 rounds into every torso engaged. With quality hunting rounds, hunters typically only require 1 to 2 rounds to kill a deer. Quality hunting rounds may cost more but they also are more cost effective as well as delivering faster incapacitating wounds.

i hear you on about 99% of what you said.....BUT Lecturing people is probably NOT the best. buy some ammo once per month is a great practice. for cost of bulk nothing wrong is stocking FMJ whether its for pistol or rifle. i actually suggest stocking fmj's over other stuff for several reasons, performance and cost. if i can get 1000 fmj for same cost as 500 hp, then fmj it is. stock piling is for when W3 starts or Zombies, so worrying about shooting into neighbors house is not even a thing. now if your stock piling for hunting or self defense in your bedroom then sure get expanders, but once the war starts or outside of your bedroom you might want something a little different. but again at what cost and benefit. i have 1st hand experience seeing what a FMJ does to a living object and it had great performance, not saying something else would have been better but it did great also. in todays world - 9mm, 223/556, 22LR, 308 is what should be stock piled. in NOT on the bandwagon of stocking shotgun ammo as way to bulky and heavy and doesnt make sense to stocking rifle rounds. this topic always leads into stock piling other things bc if your going to stock pile 10K rounds of ammo that means you are preping your home to defend as your castle and your not going anywhere, so you will need to stock pile everything you need to live on when the War or Zombies Start! (cough cough TP)

That has been the mantra I live by. I rotate and use my old ammunition first and work my way to the newer stuff so non of my ammo gets too old. The ammo I store long term is in steel 50cal ammo cans with good rubber seals and make sure there is dessicant inside them.

If you have enough of the same ammo to fill a can, or you intend to at some point, use a can. You can fit more ammo in a can when it’s loose. Or at least put the boxes in the can and use oxygen absorbers. The cardboard holds moisture and if you leave it in a humid environment for a long, that’s not good for ammo.

Surprisingly I have had issues with glock factory 10 rd mags from commie states. But mine is a sample size of one, I realize that. I don't trust anything but factory mags for my edc, but for the range, yeah I'm gonna buy the pmags. Promag does suck. I have had failures with every one of them before I knew better. Once in a while it doesn't feed going in, but I've had no major problems. I know, ya get what ya pay for, but this is play ammo so....

So fun fact I live in CA, where we have to do background checks for ammo. I moved to a different number apartment and now I can't buy ammo legally anymore until I buy a new ID. Yes there's a lot of stupid crap that can affect ammo availability. Also I'm saving the crap outta that link thanks man.

@unclefreedom213 Just found your channel and I love what you put out there. Everything you say is music to my ears. Got a question, I'd love to pick up some ammo through your link, but they only have 124gr +p. I assume I'd rather have a bunch of 135gr +p, and I like just collecting one ammo type for defensive loads instead of a mix of grainage, so ive gotta pick before starting to really stock up. Does the 124gr +p perform well enough compared to the 135gr +p? what do you stockpile? I've found 135+p but not free shipping, doesn't help you, and it's like $20 more for 250 rounds. Thoughts?

the 124 critical duty was designed around sub compacts but it still performs even through g34s. I love 124 and carried it for years and still do on some guns for me the 135 is about consistency. I have easy access to it so for me it makes sense but if I didn't have access the way I do I woild take 124 all day

Stocking rounds for all your calibers isn't always easy but most people mostly focus on 9mm, 556, 308, 12 gauge and 22.. I focus on 556, 9mm, 10mm, 357 mag, 40, 7.62×39, 308 & 12 gauge and it's not easy lol

when it comes to level of accuracy you also have to determine how accurate you will need to be in the environment you live in. Here in central valley california there are no areas to make long range shots past 200 yards so a precision rifle is not needed here. For the most part ak 47 accuracy is good enough for where i live.

People have different incomes and expenses. For someone who is limited in income, I would suggest buying 1 box of what you can afford on a regular basis. Whether every 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months. But be regular. For someone doing better in life, get a case every year or a case every month, whatever makes sense for your shooting volume. And make sure you are shooting enough In a year to make a difference if you actually have to use a gun under stress.

This is the key right here. Honestly, just go to your local store and buy a box or two on payday. And if u commit to this your stash will grow

oxygen absorbers? you mean silica gel packets/dessicants?
@DylanJBartram
@DylanJBartram 2 ай бұрын
Those will work, or straight up o2 absorbers, just don't keep opening the container. Oxygen absorbers like they use for food storage. They come sealed. Work better than just those silica packs you find like in shoe boxes and random sht you buy, but will get saturated and lose efficacy if you keep opening container or they aren't airtight.

I hate that "if it won't run steel it doesn't deserve brass" mentality. Its just stupid. The people that say that are either trying to hide their inferior purchasing power or else they are super rich and don't care about what they spend. But here in realville, we buy what we can when we can. If its steal case, so be it. Now with that said. Stocking up for the range and stocking up for defense is two different things. Steal for the range. Not for defense. Unless of course its all you got. Which exposes another issue, being unprepared.

You know what ammo I just found out is actually garbage? Sig v crown. It looks good, prices similar to others yet performance is dog shit. I shot that, critical duty and hst all from the same gun. Same distance into the same medium. V crown acted like an fmj. Every shot. Critical duty however expanded perfectly and consistently.

Uncle Freedom: You should not only be stockpiling 55gr FMJ. Me, who stockpiles mainly FMJs: Ok cool, why and how should I stockpile 556? Unlce Freedom: In the next video ill tell you why? Me: damnit lol Ive learned lessons the hard way. When Obama was in office and we had the Sandy Hook active shooter I struggled to find and purchase my first AR15 (BCM 14.5). I eventually bought my first AR15 and then didnt really buy as much 556 as I actually needed. Covid hit and once again I struggled with buying ammo. I changed all of that and im up to 9k of 9mm. 6k of FMJs for training and 3k of HSTs 124. On the 556 side I have about 6k of FMJs and about 1k of different types of premium 556 / 223 to see what my rifle likes. My plan was to at least stockpile 556 FMJs since the premium stuff is expensive.

you know if your going to tell people not to stock fmj 5.56 ammo exclusively then I would suggest at least explain to your audience why the military adopted the round in the first place and as a fellow reloader explain what a 55 grain fmj bullet does to the human body traveling at 3200 fps out of a 20 inch barrel.
