Here in this First Lite Gear Review, we look at the Brooks vs Uncompahgre. The First Lite Brooks Down Sweater (or Brooks Down Jacket) is new to the First Lite 2019 line. When we saw the new Brooks Down Sweater, my first questions was "how will it compare to the awesome Uncompahgre Jacket. Both the Books Jacket and Uncompahgre jacket in this video are in First Lite Fusion Camo. The new First Lite Brooks Jacket is super light weight, not quite as warm as the Uncompahgre jacket, but and awesome fall insulation piece addition to the First Lite 2019 line.

I have the puffy jacket and love that thing. But dang it that Brooks looks killer.

Absolutely! The Brooks is pretty sweet. I'll be interested to get it in some colder weather and see how warm it really is.

@@sonyaedith yeah, I'd definitely go with the Uncompahgre for October hunts as its much warmer than the Brooks. The Brooks is perfect for early season as it's not terribly warm. Thanks for watching!

I bought the brooks mitts this year to add to my kit. I now have the puffy pants, puffy jacket and brooks mitts for my colder weather hunts. The puffy pant and the brooks mitts have really finished out my late season hunting items.

I love your videos man keep them coming!! But I'm confused on something, the Brooks down is way more than the puffy jacket. So why would the down not have better warmth to it than the puffy? Like what makes the brooks down cost so much more than the puffy? I'm trying to buy one & I want your opinion on this

Thanks man! Appreciate the comment. I'm guessing the down is just more expensive than the synthetic used in the Uncompahgre. First Lite does make a down jacket that is warmer than the Uncompahgre (the Chamberlain) as well. But, the Uncompahgre is definitely warmer than the Brooks, but heavier as well.

How does the noise level compare? I was always impressed with how quiet the face fabric of the Uncompaghre was given how light and compressible it is. Nice video!

Thanks for watching! I'd say the noise level is slightly higher on the Brooks. I imagine it'll quiet down a bit after some use and/or washing, but we'll see. It is a little noisier than the Uncompahgre though. You can pick up the noise difference a little in the video. Not a massive difference, but there is a difference.

As far as sizing goes, I understand the size up that you stated and it shows in the video. You did state height and so on, any chance for chest size? Thanks

I forgot to give my chest size....sorry about that! I'm a 42 chest size, 5'11", 185lbs. So, I'm just barely a large on the sizing chart from First Lite. That probably explains why I can go with a large or med, depending on the cut of the piece. Hopefully that helps!

Someone's theory was the early season outer layers have the blue darker tints because surroundings are richer at this time. And the modern to later season out layers have the brown to match with deader surroundings

@@Tiktockkk ...I touched base with First Lite and they stated that the difference in the color between the two is because of the difference in fabric used. It wasn't designed to be different, but the Fusion pattern just prints differently on the two materials.

How is the toughness of the jackets, does one or the other look like it will rip in brush?

Hey there Steven! Neither one of them are terribly durable. They are both made to be lightweight options, so brush busting would rip the shell material on them. If you need something more durable, the Guide jacket or Catalyst would be a better option (although neither of those are very warm). Thanks for watching!

@@BackwoodsPursuit thanks, I was looking at the guide but saw reviews it didn't help with the wind so I opted for the uncompahgre for now. I'll look at the catalyst as an outer layer with the puffy. Thanks again.

@@steven_farmer89 that's a great choice! Yeah, the Uncompahgre is more versatile and quite a bit warmer. I'm not a huge fan of the Guide jacket as it's not much more than a durability cover really. It's an odd piece to me, but has it's place I suppose. The Catalyst over the Uncompahgre is a good combo though!

I have done that and it works well. You want to make sure the Uncompahgre isn't so tight that you compress the down of the Brooks, but it makes for a nice warm combo. Thanks for watching!

@@jeremymclachlan6089 you bet! I don't have personal experience wearing both vs the Chamberlain but I've heard that that combo is somewhat similar. I'd probably guess the Chamberlain is still warmer than those too combined though.

They would both be able the same.in wind. Neither are an actual wind break though. That I know of (and I could be wrong) First Lite doesn't have a true wind break jacket unfortunately.

Will it stand up to brush bad trees?

Well, it is an ultralight piece, so the material is very thin. If you are in thorny areas or doing a lot of brush busting, I'd probably put something like the Corrugate Guide Jacket over it to protect it. It's fairly durable for how light it is, but not a brush buster IMO.

Uncompahgre, NOT Uncompadre. The name Uncompahgre (/ʌnkʌmˈpɑːɡreɪ/ ( listen)) comes from the Ute word Uncompaghre, which loosely translates to "dirty water," "red lake," or "red water spring" and is likely a reference to the many hot springs in the vicinity of Ouray.
