Great video! I live on a barrier island with an unconfined aquifer, just a big sand bar. North Padre Island, Corpus Christi, TX. I have washed in several wells and use this for irrigation. I just found you today. I have just put in some monitoring wells and am trying to study the drawdown and cone of depression. My goal is to utilize this resource responsibly and help educate others. I haven't seen all of your videos yet, I do enjoy the way you present the information. Thank you!

This is so simple and so good that I have downloaded it. Thanks. If you had touched briefly on why the water mass would be under pressure, it would have been perfect.

I stumbled upon this whilst doing a hydrology quiz. And yes this video is 7 years old and probs not that appropriate.. But you have an attractive voice and could use that weapon to teach literally any topic for high school and college female students haha.

Amazing explanation! It was like a lightbulb lit up in my head when you explained that the aquitard puts pressure on the confined aquifier. So the potentiometric surface is the level the confined aquifier water wants to be at

Is there any relation between the thickness of shale layer and the amount of pressure buildup in the water table, hence the height of potentiometric surface?

I wish you could have clarified what confined and unconfined aquifer is in the very beginning, though it is clear that sandstone is sedimentary rock. But it cleared very well piezometer 😊

the water level in a well (piezometer) indicates the water table for unconfined aquifers and the potentiometric surface of confined aquifers.

if the layer is homogenous can we assume it is permeable due to a greater chance of connected pores. and for heterogenous layer it would be impermeable
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 5 жыл бұрын
Homogeneity only means the layer has a constant permeability throughout the unit. In other words, the whole unit could be relatively permeable or impermeable, but its the same permeability everywhere within that unit. Heterogeneity means permeability varies throughout the unit spatially.

In my geology 2301 class they call the potieometric Surface an Artesian Pressure Surface
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 4 жыл бұрын
I've never heard that term, but it works for artesian aquifers (which are always confined aquifers). You have to be careful though, because a potentiometric surface can also refer to the water table in an unconfined aquifer (which is NOT an artesian aquifer).

What is semi confined aquifer?
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 6 жыл бұрын
Good question, a semi-confined aquifer could mean an aquifer that is only partially confined. In other words, there may be some "leakage" into the semi-confined aquifer from overlying aquifers.

the water table is the potentiometric surface for an unconfind aquifer, there is NO water table for confined aquifers
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 6 жыл бұрын
I made that clear in the video. the potentiometric surface is the level to which water will rise in an aquifer, which is the same as the water table in an unconfined aquifer.
@SSSISIable
@SSSISIable 6 жыл бұрын
Firstly I want to say that I did not want my comments to be harsh, I am really sorry my friend, I have to say that your videos are great, smart and helpful! Secondly, at the start of the video, you said that the water table is the water level in the aquifer, which is only partly true, it is the water level in the unconfined aquifer. at 4:27 min, you said that the water table in the confined aquifer is .... the fact is that there is no water table for confined aquifers.. I hope this makes sense?
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 6 жыл бұрын
No worries, I see your point now. Yes, it would be called the potentiometric surface for a confined aquifer and not the water table.
