Well explained, I'm from northern Somalia where water well is extremely valued, we have a lots of valleys in the area where i am from, so hopefully with the help of your explanation i will hit the jackpot. Thank you

Good day! Tell me please, is there any information on the distribution of the depression cone in the confined aquifer? For some reason, they always depict a funnel passing through a waterproof layer. How can it spread evenly through the clay layer? It seems to me that the depression funnel in the confined horizon should be enclosed between the impermeable layers, or am I wrong? Thanks!
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 2 жыл бұрын
The monitoring wells will be installed in the permeable layers, not the clays or impermeable layers. So when you see that "funnel" or "cone", it is representing the head in the permeable layers, not the head in the clay or impermeable layers. So when you see the cone spreading through the clay layers, that just means the head in the permeable layers rises to an elevation that is the same as the impermeable layers - it does not represent head in the impermeable layers. Hope that makes sense!

@@daneandersen8181 Thanks for your reply! however, it is still unclear what a sinkhole will actually look like when pumping water from an aquifer enclosed between two impermeable layers (eg, clay). If the static water level in the well is set above the roof of the watertight layer (in the pressure well), then the water level will decrease during water intake (the static level will drop to the dynamic water level). In this case, the depression funnel, it seems to me, should not go beyond the aquifer, enclosed between the layers of clay. Or is it not so?

I have a dug well and the water table is about 17 feet down and I have a water pipe at the bottom of a hill that is higher and never stops flowing. is the pipe in the side of the hill an confined aquifer and is it cleaner water ?

How does one obtain a potentiometric/pressure reading in the water well of a confined aquifer? Does one remove the well head cap each year to see if the water level has dropped and/or risen with a string measurement or ruler? I imagine one must use professional service to ensure confined aquifer is not contaminated by doing so, either.
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can remove the well cap and use a water level tape. Usually the well will have a smaller pipe to insert the water level tape to take a measurement, that way you don't get the tape wrapped around the pump column or cables. The water level tapes are quite expensive, but you can rent them from environmental supply shops. You don't need a professional to do this, just the right equipment and decontamination procedures. Don't go sticking a contaminated tape into your well!

Hi i saw all your videos and i want say perfect....... I wanna ask for a pumping test for permeability why using piezometer and observation well rather than just observation well
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 4 жыл бұрын
A piezometer is basically an observation well. Piezometers are just small diameter wells that are mainly used for measuring water levels (the small diameter makes it cheaper to install, but you sacrifice the ability to insert a large pump into it). The main point is that during an aquifer test, you measure water levels in the well you are pumping, and any surrounding wells (which in that sense are observation wells, and could be a regular well or piezometer)

So basically unconfined also means shallow well and confined be a deep water artisiean well?
@daneandersen8181
@daneandersen8181 4 жыл бұрын
No, not necessarily. You could have confined conditions in a shallow aquifer, and unconfined conditions in a deeper aquifer. What really makes the difference is if the water in that aquifer is under pressure because a low permeability rock unit (e.g. clay or shale) is overlying the aquifer
