this structured approach to getting familiar with the fretboard and linking up root notes, chord shapes across the neck really resonates.

I started doing this exercise recently and IT WORKS - seriously, if you are a beginner & unsure, commit to trying this out - you will start to notice improvement & gain muscle memory for the shapes & their relative positioning in just a few days... now go try out some of your favourite songs, playing with these new shapes higher up the fretboard and watch your confidence soar as you realise how much easier it has become and see how it all fits together! A while back, I hit that dreaded plateau. I've been learning songs through tabs or tutorials, but I had hit a roadblock that kept me from progressing. I tried learning theory in that past but at that time, it was still above my head. Thanks to you, I'm now learning by ear (what key) and using the circle of fifths to play along.

For major chords we have 7 notes back , 7 notes forward and for minor chords we have 2 and 4 notes forward and 3 notes back. For example, what chords works for Bmaj? ...well, 7 notes back is E which will be a maj chord, and 7 notes forward is F# which will be the second maj chord. 2 notes forward will be C# which will be a minor chord, 4 notes forward will be D# also a minor chord. And last, 3 notes back, will be G#, minor chord as well.

Interesting exercise Brian. As a side note, this is also an excellent ear training exercise as well. Thanks for sharing.

Great! I’m still going over it with you for the first key. 4 days in a row, good tips for the higher strings. I’m going to stay on those 4 chords until I get it down. This is a great method I hope you can go further in depth with interval training and how they correlate to finding chord tones, I've seen many videos of yours on chord tones but if u can incorporate interval training in there it be great just for getting comfortable breaking the box soloing and moving

Really good lesson, I'll be doing this lesson every day this week and longer. I would like to hear you pick out an existing standard tune like "Autumn Leaves" or "Desafinado" or any standard and hear how you figure out and drop chords into the song as you play. Most teachers are teaching chords but I don't see anyone teaching how to read music. If you can read a written song on a music staff and play the song and others like it over and over, isn't that the most fun way of learning where the notes on the fret board are? Then, when you are confident of all the notes and where they are on the music staff and fretboard, adding chords would be a snap starting with simple theory: 135 is major triad and 1b35 is minor triad and building on that and knowing where all the chords are immediately. So, I'm trying to read music other than those simple guitar book songs and playing melodies by ear using the entire fretboard anywhere my fingers take me. It is a great way to learn the fretboard for me, where the notes I play are on the music staff, and playing songs helps learning which finger positions are comfortable or sound better and which direction the sound or position takes you, either from string to string or down the fretboard then down the strings again. If I get good at playing standard melodies plus reading then adding chords would be a cinch. Anyway, I think more teachers including you should teach reading as another Way to learn fretboard plus you learn a million great songs of American standards, and each has their own unique chord structure. Too many students think they have to learn progressions and then they are musicians or composers, well I say playing songs of American culture and other countries is important as it gives you more ideas too to create your own. Anyway it's late, but tomorrow I begin using your 4156 chords over total fretboard idea, love it. Thanks a mil. ciao.

An excellent series of exercises. Thank-you. Just what I needed to help me tie together various chord progressions, chord shapes, intervals and arpeggios. Finally hammering in the notes on the fretboard as well is a great bonus. I'm also using it for various 7/6/9 chords. Very versatile practice system that's practical and melodic. (Also quite satisfying to round up your subscriber numbers to 6,666! I like the symmetry.) Thanks again for giving my practice some structure.

Thank you for these awesome lessons. They take my dumbass A minor and E major shape Barre chords (and associated M7, m7, 6th shapes) and thinking in the key of C to the next level. :-D

Great lesson, but hit a wall when attempting key of D. The Bm has me totally confused.

When playing do you think of what notes your'e on or are you thinking the progression like 1,4,5? I seem to play just knowing what key, root and where the 1-6 progressions are. I don't necessarily know what note I'm on without thinking about it. I do know where the progression is going and the relationships. Love the videos man, I've learned alot.

Great stuff again. Wierd how you hate the same stuff I do like the C and D bars. I really like your idea of using the partial m7 shape instead. I had been playing 3 note D shapes and making all C shapes C7. This is so much better

Though I find this interesting and do my best to understand it, I heard Misha Mansoor say in a video with the Capn' that he doesn't know a lick of theory. While I believe that he may not think he does but just naturally understands it in some way, it did make me happy to know that someone of his caliber doesn't sit around all day using theory to create cool music. I will continue to learn it, though, because even videos like this help me understand the fret board in its entirety...something I never thought I would consider doing. I mean, what kind of musician doesn't understand their instrument inside and out? Sad to think how many of us there truly are. Thanks for sharing your nerdy yet impressive knowledge with us in a simple, down-to-earth way.
