Rare-earth magnets are great for tool holders. Mount the tools (turning tools, chisels, etc.) handle down on a ledge then embed a magnet where the business end of the tool is on the rear of the holder. The magnet holds the tool upright, where you can see the blade.

A couple of more... Embed magnets around the edge of your drill press table. Use a Forstner bit to drill through the table, just short of the top. Embed the magnets. This will prevent drill bits from escaping over the edge. Use CA glue to glue RE magnets to the back of the DC remote (and TV). Stick them where they're convenient. I have two DC remotes, one floats around and the other stays with my table saw.

Sew magnets into the corners of old curtains and use as protective covers for machinery The magnets will hold the corners down.

Be careful what material that you use. Some is slightly hygroscopic and will wick water out of the air. Not so good on cast iron. I use the magnetic sheets (like huge refrigerator magnets) to cover the tops on all of my stationary tools.

I have 2 additions to the list. First is a magnetic “broom”. It’s basically a broom with a magnetic bottom. Easier to just run it over the floor to find lost screws than the telescopic ones. Works great under cabinets. But, my best hack is for changing the dust bag on my Laguna C-Flux dust collector. It’s a 3-handed operation. You have to hold the bag up on the bottom of the fine particle filter housing, while wrapping a band around and clipping it. Almost impossible. So, I just lift the bag into place, put a magnet on the front and back to hold the bag in place, and then I can use 2 hands to wrap the strap around and clip it.

The magnetic parts trays are also useful for driver bits. I have one for each Phillips, square, and Torx. I put bets of various lengths in the trays so I can just grab one when needed.

Another great magnet is the magnet stud finder. The magnet finds the drywall screw which is 99.7% of the time in the stud. Find the screw and you have the stud. MUCH EASIER and MORE ACCURATE than a stud finder.

Hi Sedge, As usual another great info session. I have used magnets in the garage workshop for a very long time. I fully agree with every one of your uses and have the same ones. As you say in so many videos, the key to working well is easy access to your tools and the magnets provide this all the time. I went to a new woodworkers garage to give him some ideas on how to start setting up his workshop( he is a carver) and my starting gift to him was a flat magnetic bar and a magnetic tray. He was stoked! Magnets also follow the main rule of workshop efficiency...change. Magnets let you change things with any dramas. Always a pleasure to view your videos for more ideas and info. Regards from Australia.

I’ve got a few tool boxes in a trailer with drawers that don’t want to stay closed and even being parked slightly off level would require locking and unlocking the boxes. Rectangular magnets on the sides of the drawers close to the drawer front interact with the box frames enough to solve the problem.

I wish all Stainless Steel was attracted by magnets. Some is, some isn't. So you can have Stainless steel which is ferrous but not appreciably affected by magnets.

Careful with those neodymium magnets. Too many in one spot can create a black hole that will suck your shop into it. ;-)

I use the same type of magnet that you use for finding staples and nails in wood....excellent for finding and marking drywall nails and screws. The problem with your green toolchest could be worn rubber detentes...if you cannot find replacements, you could try fixing magnets to the back of the drawers (if not strong enough add one to the back of the chest, set to attract each other). Last month I bought a pair of green magnetic bit holders like yours (from Amazon uk) Brand was Casoman...they are a bit cheap and cheerful and not as good as the proper Mechanics Time Saver brand, but they are close to festool green in colour, and do the job of organizing my drills and bits in my systainers.

PSA for Magnet Safety: if you’ve got little ones keep track of your small magnets and make sure they are well out of reach. If they ingest a pair, the magnets stick between loops of bowel and can cause serious injury/death. This has become a bigger deal since neodymium magnets became widely available.
