@@DIYReid or Andy Espenan what was the other kind of wire that you used that went through the cabinets? Do u need anything else to hook it up to be able to jump it like 4 ft beside what you showed in the video? I know the solderless connections are great for small areas but I have 4-5ft sections in a few spots I need to run wire instead of lights. As long as I don't need to solder anything, I can figure it out!

I appreciate your taking the time to make this video to share. It is just what I was looking for!! I nave to smh, though, because he spent all that time installing the lighting and making this video, but didn’t want to spend an extra 15-30 minutes maximum spraying the tops of the cabinets with 409 to wipe the dirt away. Men🙄 LOL. It’s literally that easy…spray with 409, wipe with paper towels to remove dirt, wipe again with clean damp rag to rinse cleaner residue away, then and dry towel. Poof! It’s done. Just did this in my son’s new kitchen and it smells so much better now that the years of built up grease the previous owner’s left behind is gone . He was so appreciative. Boys, while you’re already up there, take the extra bit of time to clean a bit. It’s worth it!! Your nose with thank you for it!! Written with love from mom’s everywhere❤️

I also have lights on top of the cabinets, and did it with no outlet at all. I actually had to run an extension cord right along the seam of the cabinet where no one sees it all the way to the outlet behind the fridge. At the end of the cord I plugged a smart outlet and have them so they will automatically go on and off at certain times. They could also be turn on or off using Alexa. I really love the vibe it gives.

would be in parallel. if in series, think old Christmas tree lights. if one light is out, they all are out.. In parallel, all lights between the plug and the last one are then just "tapped off" the power run. :)
@illestofdemall13
@illestofdemall13 2 жыл бұрын
It's parallel. They are made to be connected and wired in parallel. Series would mean connecting your positive to one end of the LED tape and connecting the negative to the other end. In a series circuit, if one bulb fails, it will make the whole section turn off since the positive and negative have both been broken by the failure of that bulb's filament.

Thanks for this vid man! You explained it so well and made it sort of fool proof. I’m going to be building and installing kitchen cupboards and didn’t know how to add the lights below. I actually thought they’d be the round lights so I literally thought I’d have to redesign the bottom of the top cupboards just to hide the round lights 😅 that would’ve been way too over complicated. With your advice I can add the lights to my quote and do it myself AND score some extra work AND save my client money👍🏾can’t wait to see your other vids. Keep it up man!

I put RGB LEDs on the top of my new cabinets and just use the remote to turn them off and on. My wife wasn’t impressed with the colors, until she saw them being changed. Now, I will go in the kitchen and she will be sitting at the breakfast bar drinking a glass of wine with the room lights out and the LEDs on the color of the day! Now I have to add more to the bottom. I have been trying some rechargeable ones, but the motion sensors are not working correctly, so a better solution is needed. If anyone is installing new cabinets, I suggest having wiring done during the install, just in case you want to add them later.

@DIYReid 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure the term but it’s normal house outlet wiring. A home run from the breaker will power multiple outlets. You just have to be careful adding outlets to the breaker as if you’re adding devices to power it could overload the circuit. This situation the LEDs power with very little energy it doesn’t matter.

So to go from bottom to top of cabinet, your splicing where you need to whether bottom or top cabinet, then to connect the bottom LED strip to the top LED strip, you're connecting the two strips with wire and connectors? Is this basically right?

I’d go for 3,500 K lights rather than those blue looking 5,000 or 6,000 Kelvin lights. That’s not completely warm where it looks orange but it’s a warmer more cozy looking light.

@@DIYReid We have old four foot fluorescent tubes some previous owner put up there and I have a couple of bulbs out and don’t want to replace them. All those lights use something like 300 watts. I could do much better with LEDs. For the colors in my kitchen at least I like the less blue lights, like the ones we already have. I like less blue lights in general for indoors. I don’t mind 5000k super bright lights in the garage but inside I like something in between that orange 2,700k look and the blue 5000k look, 3500K, maybe 4000K, but 4,000 is still pretty blue.

One thing I am not clear about is how you ran 110v from existing socket and I presume an already finished backsplash on the backside of the wall. Think you said using fishtape or golden rod fiberglass rods. Was it just luck you didn't hit anything else in the 110v extention above the cabinets. When (and they will) start to come unglued if nothing else but gravity acting on them, use Weldwood Contact cement. Blue tape about 1/2" wide gap, brush on both light strip and the 1/2" wide gap between the two rows of blue tape. Use cheap Paint brush on contact cement.. let dry to touch, then stick um on. They'll never come off easily. Don't confuse Weldwood Contact Cement with Rubber Cement.

I did this for my bar and set it up to an adjustable time motion sensor from amazon. They only come on when you're ready for them. Don't have to worry about them being on when they don't need to be. Don't have to worry about shutting them off every night (which you will forget) or setting them up to a timer in which they're on for longer than they need to be.

In a simple two wire strip all the leds are wired in parallel. Each led is connected to the plus and minus side. if you cut the strip and then and put it back together, they'll still be in parallel. When leds or any bulb are wired in series (which is one path) if one bulb burns out, they all go out.

I'm thinking of going this route with my under-the-cabinets lighting. I really like your implementation. I like the idea of having the smart way to control the lights as well as a physical button we can maybe mount someplace for the kids or guests who wouldn't have easy manual control of the lights. The Zigbee button says it requires a hub? I don't recall you explaining that bit. How do you link the button to control those smart plugs?

You could buy a third plug and plug it in on the wall above the counter and in the app of the plug turns on turn the lights off and vice versa. There is a button on the plug.

@@DIYReid You can also put an outlet inside the cabinet only about a foot above the existing backsplash outlet. It's more intrusive but can be easier than running power all the way to the top (sometimes). Then you can just run low voltage from inside the cabinet.

Nice I may try this one. So I want the same light as the incandescent bulbs is that the warm white? Also I have the exact set up outlet behind fridge and on the other side outlet in cabinet for microwave so I can run two separate runs on either side of the kitchen and go above and below. Questions. Power cord to the first light strip and when do you use the long red wire? When you’re connecting one light to another cabinet? What are the connectors for? I will re watch. Also does this have an app to turn on and off since the power will be behind the fridge and behind a cabinet? Do they dim?

Yes, with a zigbee button you'll need a hub. You can buy these outlet plugs - amzn.to/3Pxafe1 and just put them on a timer to turn on in the morning and off at night. I ditched the button and use it for something else as I never used it.
