The Azov Battalion is a volunteer militia based in Mariupol, Ukraine that is allegedly linked to neo-Nazism. The fighters have been very active during the crisis in eastern Ukraine, carrying out nightly patrols around the city and manning checkpoints.
VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky embeds with the battalion while they train and conduct a patrol, then watches as they retreat from their outposts when pro-Russia separatists began firing artillery toward the city.

I just watched a BBC reportage dating 3 years ago that clearly shows how the far right militia (Azov) were very closed to the Ukrainian government, the video is still up but you can't comment. Back than western media didn't shy away from showing this face of Ukraine now play down the issue! Just wondering what's really going on as I find it hard to find unbiased sources

i am the most politically disengaged person, but even I remember the stronghold far-right, nazis in ukraine had on their govt. back in 2014-2015. I remember seeing these vice reportings and being digusted by them. So to hear just a few years later, western powers are financially backing these nazis and then turning to media outlets to say that "Azov aren't fascists" and "that's just Russian propaganda" makes me feel like im losing my mind. Manufacturing consent happening in real time. And the everyday ukrainian's suffer regardless. Non-western countries suffer bc they are reliant on euro economies & industry. I despise the west.

I dont understand why people are calling the Ukrainians "Neo-Nazis" for simply defending their own Nation. For instance, I live in Australia. If all of a sudden 50% of the population declared that Australia was part of China, I'd be up in arms defending Australia for its right as its own country, just like the Ukrainians are doing. We may have ties to NATO and the West given our former British-colonial status and culture, but we are still effectively an independant Nation.

I think it may have something to do with the behavior and imagery. Venerating the SS Battalion of Ukrainian volunteers and the fighters of Stephan Bandera. The countless published imagery of Ukrainian army and volunteer Battalion with swastika, wolf hook, Nordic sun and other Nazi imagery. The tactics they've used in maidan along with the propaganda of svaboda and right sector. It really is not a stretch at all to insinuate it. I think the Ukrainian's would be more honest if they would just own it and say "so what?"

There are Russian soldiers in Ukraine, I have no clue if they are there for fighting or just to scout places out for the rebels so that they can do the fighting but it is a fact Russians are in Ukraine, just Russia is denying it because that would give NATO a reason to do something. Russian soldier's deaths are being repressed in Russian media and they are saying that the soldiers were in a rebel group before they were sent to fight.

@Someone These guys from the Azov battalion use the swastika as a Nazi symbol. They are inspired by Hitler's SS divisions and honor Nazi henchmen from western Ukraine who fought on Hitler's side. Batalien Azov consists of members of various neo-Nazi organizations, which in turn were formed from ultra-right football fans.

There were no bombings, the Ukrainians took this city very quickly. There was almost no resistance. The locals tried to put up barricades, but they were quickly dismantled. There is a video on the Internet from May 9, 2014, how everything happened. The thing is that Azovstal is a very large enterprise and belonged to the oligarch Akhmetov (he created Azov). Therefore, he could not lose his wealth.

Yes, NATO spent billions over 8 years training and arming the Nazis, but it only helped increase civilian casualties. Now there are a few thousand of the most powerful NATO-trained group left stranded at the Azovstal plant and the Russian Federation is offering them to surrender, but Kiev needs them more as sacred victims, like the Heavenly Hundred on the Maidan in 2014, no one is going to unblock them. If NATO financed not Nazis, but, for example, children of athletes, there would be less bloodshed in the world.

Most of our judgement comes from what the soldiers of both sides have to say and the publics' opinion. In addition, most of the evidence is visual anyway as it is recorded. Not propaganda at all, so don't even try and argue that it is.

Что до 2014 года, то Украинская армия сыпалась на глазах именно поэтому для спасения ситуации США привлекли Германию и Францию для переговоров, а сами они стояли в сторонке прекрасно зная цену этим договоренностям, которые по словам Меркель были подписаны лишь для затягивания времени и перевооружения Украины. Лучше скажи мне мил человек что означает черное солнце и Вольфсангель на символике Азова, странным образом они напоминают символику дивизии СС Дас Райх, совпадение, думаю именно совпадение)

Early on asked one if nazi and denied, explaining logo means Ukraine and sun and wheel..This shows clearly a war with pro Russians vs volunteer azov battalion on other side. This is pre 2022 invasion. Yet this is never explained. Un abd human rights groups say 12,000 civilians killed by Ukraine in this region. So this is backstory. Even if we never saw on our media.

There's a perfectly good explanation as for why they weren't given the tanks that they were promised. Poroshenko needed them for his fancy parade! If they did Vice won't report. The militia group does in fact have varying degrees of "facism" within its ranks. They use more of the symbols of Nazism like swastikas but aren't really praising Hitler. Eastern Ukrainians are predominantly ethnic Russians not Ukrainians. That's why the civilians are attacked by pro-Kiev militias as well as the government. At the end of the day the strongest will survive.

I'm guessing the Azov battalion and other volunteer units don't get heavy equipment from the government because the government doesn't trust them enough still, than because there isn't any. They fear that these units might not be satisfied with the results of the eventual peace.

@@Ajox191The Azov battalion was implemented into the Ukrainian military literally over night in 2014 after Ukraine's regular army refused to wage war on their brothers. This all started after Ukraine's democratically elected government was overthrown in a US backed coup in 2014 and a pro US government was selected by US officials. Naturally the pro Russians in eastern Ukraine (and Crimea) was outraged and started peacefully protesting on the streets of Donbas so the government sent Ukrainian troops to shut them up. I've seen a video of Ukrainian tanks firing at protesters and some of them were elderly... I guess the rest is history.

Why didn't they ask the ideological Nazi what their political idea and program was? It is not the emblem, although even no one explains that it is taken from the emblem of Hitler's punitive SS unit only the symbol ( И )in an inverted form.The emblem is called "Wolf's Hook". By the name of the organization, you can understand that this is neo-Nazism. "The idea of a nation", ( I ) in the middle fits, but I did not see that the Ukrainian alphabet had a Latin letter ( N ). And the reporters pretend that they believe this nonsense, which means that everyone who watches them also needs to believe this lie. What kind of democracy can we talk about here?

To give the Ukranians the benefit of the doubt, it isn't smart to clump together in a single location when you are being attacked with rockets. Scattering in different directions mitigates the damage from any direct hit so that could have been what they were doing there.

a day before the strike happened, the mayor of the town called for an evacuation to the train station specifically, instead of other evac sites, which amassed civilians in one area. Craziest coincidence is that the train station is the target the whole time

After the merit they showed in mariupol, it's pretty safe to assume they withdrew to minimize casualties in the event of a direct attack.

Dead ken cant fight, the soldiers are being wise. With no atg weapons or mbts,the Ukrainian forces don't stand a laughing chance. These guys didn't even have mortars; That big independence day parade was the biggest blunder of the 21st century.

Well they were doing fine for many months until some guy at the Kremlin (I don't know what his name is, Putin or something?) decided that it was time for more involvement.
